Man what a bummer, Matek used to make the more reliable stuff, too... Only the one bad ELRS receiver basically and they act against the open source community that basically gave them the complete software/firmware for free, which probably saved them development cost in the ten thousands or even more... thanks John for putting the word out, I definitly won't support their behaviour by buying their stuff any more.
Great summary! You're right that Matek was one of the early ExpressLRS adopters and like you said, they were quick to produce unique new hardware which was fantastic considering how difficult it was to get PWM hardware rolling. It was disappointing that the crystal hardware issue started things down a path where the relationship deteriorated. I believe this can be resolved though by following the same guidelines that all other manufacturers agree to, and hopefully Matek will return to their position as a brand users can rely on for ExpressLRS hardware.
I’m agree. I have a LOT of Matek hardware and appreciate having choices. I’d love to see Matek re-engage with developers across the board.
I have a new build that I initially put a Matek FC and Matek ELRS Rx in it. I had so many problems with it during setup that I scrapped the Matek stuff and replaced it with a Speedybee FC and Happy Model ELRS Rx. Everything just worked after that. Now I know why. Thanks for making this video, John! Cheers!
You’re welcome.
I have alrady made the switch from Matek to Speedybee and all my TX and RX are Radiomaster. Doesnt make sense to stick with a company who doesnt care about their consumers.
Speedybee and radiomaster are my favourite 😍. Peace
That's crazy.. I primarely have Matek ELRS stuff. An honestly. I did have problems. Lost 1 new plane after 17 seconds and twice almost lost another I thought it was me or the firmware. Comming from another A-brand it shook my trust in the equipment to the ground... I did use it again the other day on a test plane and temps were low. All is fine. I bought a new ER6 radiomatster RX. I flashed one for a friend and liked it so much that I also bought one. It will drive my new F3A trainer that's almost finished... I guess I will stay from matek ELRS PWM rx's from now on.. Dang... I knew something was wrong...
Thanks for the whistle, that will have us direct our Chinese hardware manufacturers of the top ranges of rotorflight heli flight controllers to the right direction when considering RX hardware to integrate as a full piece, and prevent issues down the pipeline.
they are ALL chinese. such an odd obession you westerners have with calling it "Chinese" like there is a difference. Its all made in china
I noticed some time ago that Matek wasn’t what it used to be and switched to SpeedyBee and BetaFPV.
You are the reason I was looking at using and learning more about Matek devices. I’m glad I haven’t gone down that road yet. Thanks so much for the great info as always. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Wow. This is a very beneficial PSA. I am considering ELRS in some planes as a bit of a project and stuff like this is good to know.
Thank you for your open and honest assessment. I too have been a big supporter of Matek product over the years as their quality has generally been good. Very disappointing to see their response.
Will be avoiding their products going forward until they make changes in their approach.
Thanks again for all the great content!
So glad CZcams recommended your video to me. I just purchased my first ELRS pwm receiver (Matek R24-P6V) and was about to put it in my new glider next weekend. Will defenitely not go in my plane now and wont get any other receivers from matek anymore.
Let’s hope they come around and get involved with the development team again.
Thanks for the heads up, much appreciated. 👍
Thanks for heads up👍🏻 I was about to try some of the receivers since l ran out of R168 no longer sold. I did had some issues with fc in past too, but l thought that it's just me. Switched to Speedebee and it just works flawlessly. So Speedebee for fc and Radiomaster receivers for me now... Good to have options 👍🏻
I've been using RM modules lately. They seem well built.
I have a few matek that I was proud of having until I heard about the temp issue. It's real scary to think matek won't even work with elrs on this stuff
John being John Malkovich. Love it and stand behind your work! MATEK
Wow. I bought two of the 6 channel Rx's a while back and just figured they were too new to have specific firmware yet. I flashed them with the generic firmware mentioned at the time (they did NOT mention using the Happy Model target on their website when I bought mine). These are for small foamies, so I'll use them anyway, but I guess I'm done with Matek. Thanks for this vid!
Question: I am using Er8GV from radiomaster on my Benny boxcar. This receiver has a UART that can be use for a GPS. According to RadioMaster, GPS must speak CRSF protocol. Do u know any GPS that can talk CRSF protocol?
Damn just purchased two maytek R24-P6 rxs after watching your video where you have 2 of them rigged as a single larger rx. Was going to put them into my DC3 bit not so sure now.....
I have a lot of Matek stuff that will be staying in the box until they reconcile whatever the issues are.
Maybe I’ve missed it but are you and someone else developing a rx with gyro of your own?
Can we see a bit more of it please?
And if you are doing this, I wonder if you could release the files and we can send them to PCB Way and order them? Is something like this the plan?
Thanks
Simon
It's not just their receivers. I bought a Matek G474 Rotorflight unit. Worked great for about a dozen or two flights, then one day I plugged it in and all the magic smoke came out. WTF! EDIT: I see you mentioned the G474 right at the end of the video. WTF still applies!
What a shame, just bought a r24 p6 recently too!
We at Betaflight don’t work closely with matek either wouldn’t recommend them beyond gps units
Good to know. Thanks for the info.
I would not recommend even GPS. I do have better GPS receivers from other producers even with smaller antenna rather than matek. They have up-to 12 sats after 20 seconds but matek is not with same gps chip
Thanks for the information! This really angers me. I've purchased a lot of Matek tech, and recently a couple of their ELRS receivers. Glad that I have not installed the yet. They will going in the trash.
And I will no longer be purchasing any Matek items. What a sorry way to run a business that started out strong.
Damnit I have so many Matek receivers and FCs...
I was a vehicle mechanic for decades! (4+ decades. 'Mechanic', not 'tech'. I know carb's, throttle body, points, etc. Never relied on a cpu to tell me what to 'fix'🤷♂️). The 1 thing I learned is if it's working, DONT 'fix' it.
Having to admit u f'd up is impossible. Horrible-izon Hobby is like that. & HH does it very often.
what a pain I just bought two of the Mateksys ELRS-R24-P6V
I've got 3 new R24-P6's. Just toss them? I mean, not likely the problem can be fixed with firmware, right?
I'm sure they'll function, but I wouldn't continue buying Matek if they aren't going to have targets built for their hardware because they won't go through the development process.
Those were the first rxs I used when I got into elrs for my planes, I switched to Radiomaster elrs rxs and gladly will not go back to them. If it's expensive to make, wait til there stuck with there unsold stock
I don't really need a Rx right now, so I got lucky, and I'm not stuck with a defective board. But I will end up buying at least hundreds of them over the next few decades. Radiomaster is killing it in the RX-TX department anyway. It's too bad about this soft backbone move with those other guys, I'm just getting to understand iNAV, so someone's going to be selling me a shelf full of sensors. Holybro, you guys want a piece? Seems like there might more for you than i thought. I don't want to be bitter, but this does leave a pretty sour feeling. There's not a lot of people in this small hobby-space, relatively speaking. And some one is going to make a decent stack of cash off my love for fpv. Another thing I love, even more than this hobby, is personal accountability.
thanks for being blunt
Bought a pwm receiver and It doesn't work at all, tried many firmwares but nothing
I wonder if they don't care since their primary market is likely military at this point.
WHAT!!!! Thanks Matek, that’s 15 receivers that’s gonna be replaced!!
Matek seems to have been gradually heading downhill for a while. A few years back it was problems with their flight controllers (electronic noise on the boards, and other things), then flaky GPS modules, and now this. Someone running the show over there seems to have the wrong attitude. Really unfortunate because at one time I bought and recommended a lot of their stuff.
Me too. The R-24D has been on a lot of my models. I hope they come around and re-engage.
Metek was my goto for all wing stuff. If shady is their practice, then f’em
Wow, that sucks. Matek was really good but if they're going to pull this kinda crap and push out shitty receivers instead of fixing it when there's a problem... in the bin they go.
Yikes.... not good Matek. Fix your issues. Get back on board.
Thats sucky. Personally very impressed with radiomasters rx's.
I have 3 R24 that are now bricked and cannot be recovered as they cannot connect to Betaflight... Thats $60 ill never see again
Get a dongle. You can’t brick these in the traditional sense of requiring an eprom programmer to recover. The dongle will get them back. Radiomaster sells one for $10.
I always trusted matek to be a top tier hardware company, this is disappointing 😮
Matek is heading the same way as FrSky did a few years ago. Bye bye, others will take your place
Bye Bye Matek...
I think every thing that is built in RC is shit they can't even finishing building them like putting them in a box to protect it in flight. I don't buy much of anything in RC I would rather hunt down old stuff than this new crap. The FPV stuff that made in the US is shit compared to the stuff I flew with 8 years ago.
