Narrative Architecture: Using Story For Better Buildings

  • When people look at drawings and images of buildings, it's easy to think that they are just visual representations. In reality, they are ideas that have been turned into images, which should embody the goals and intent of your particular project.
We should be able to clearly and concisely use narrative storytelling, to describe what we were trying to do, without talking about what it looks like or other aesthetics. That's a flimsy platform to be on, because we all have very different aesthetic opinions, so yes, of course we want to "like" it, but that's one of the last things to consider at each step in the process.
If we can get a clear and compellling narrative as to what you're trying to do with your building project, we can evaluate if that's actually what we see in the drawings and as we experience the space as users.
Nobody is going to be there to explain this once you're open, so it has to be embodied in a deep way, and that's why the narrative is so crucial, and helps us create better buildings.

Great video! though I think you talk more about intentions and parameters than story/storytelling. "needing to be cheap" can be part of the story but idk if that's what you want the final design to express. I take narrative design more as an aspect you want to make obvious in your building, a house telling the story of its owner's childhood, a memorial telling the story of a ritual, or a store telling the story of its ethos. nevertheless, final products should express intentions without words, which I definitely agree with.
