  • How to Keep a Commonplace Book?
    In this video I would like to share with you some tips on how you can keep a commonplace notebook like Oscar Wilde.
    Wilde's notebooks show us that the purpose of the commonplace notebook is not in simple accumulation of interesting facts, but in making those facts part of yourself, in incorporation of those ideas that fascinate our imagination into our minds.

    I always kept my commonplace books as an overarching compendium of knowledge tailored to what my interests are, with a subsection relevant to quotes. People don't realize just how much knowledge you gain from forums, messages and conversations, but can become quickly lost or muddled due to memory. I've done this multiple times as well as accompanying sketches when it came to fountain pens, Submarines, art, aeronautic and automotive mechanics. It's a beautiful piece of literature that I actually routinely check with as a refresher as well to teach myself again on what I forgot or have "frazzled"

    I think one SHOULD copy down the exact quote if only to be able to appreciate and study a pithy turn of phrase.

      THAT'S IT! That is exactly it! You see, I've only from common place notebooks last year and I thought it was a wonderful thing to have. So I watched tutorials and I was very excited about making one. However, I wasn't excited anymore because if I wanted an encyclopedia, I would have bought one in the nearest bookshop. In other words. It was soulless. That's what was missing and I was waiting for someone to explain me exactly that and thank you, my dear Mr Wilde, wherever you may be for your enlightenment.

    This is an awesome video. I really appreciate it. I read so much classical literature, and a whole range of genres and topics within non-fiction and, often times, i simply highlight and move on, knowing i want to elaborate how i think and feel about the information, but never imagining i should use a journal to do so. i usually flesh my ideas out in school papers i have to turn in

    Totally eye-opening, thanks. I have been writing down reams of quotes for about 4 years, but will now alter and deepen my approach in this way starting now. I imagine, though, it might be some time before I can resist the temptation to first copy down the original quote exactly (we should be paraphrasing) before moving on to my own thoughts about it.

      @VashikArmenikus I was initially drawn to your videos on journalling and commonplace books, but I have since expanded that to include your videos on the Stoics and your favorite books/authors. My favorite video by far was on Oscar Wilde. You gave insight on him that was very unique and inspiring. I would love to see more of that type in the future. Thanks again for all that you do for us! ❤️

    Если вы прочли в оригинале Льва Толстого (Lev Tolstoy), то этот комментарий не составит для вас большой проблемы) Принцип ведения записной книжки, которые вы описываете в этом видео, напомнил мне принцип библиотеки цеттелькастен (zettelkasten) - библиотеки, которую вел гениальный Никлас Луман. Лучший способ усвоить знание и поместить его в свой жизненный и чувственный опыт - не только переформулировать своими словами, но и связать с другими отрывками знаний, уже существующими в предыдущих записях. Создание собственной библиотеки цеттелкастен вывело мое мышление на принципиально другой уровень. Мне кажется, вам тоже будет это интересно, если вы еще не знаакомы с этим принципом.

    hello! I loved your video but I have questions. What is the difference between a Journal, Commonplace book and a diary And we need to write into 3 notebooks at the same time?

    • @VashikArmenikus
      @VashikArmenikus  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It's hard to answer it fully in a comment. Diary is focused on daily record of events, journal is focused not on dates but on thoughts/experiences, while commonplace book is where you gather thoughts from books. I answer this question in more detail on my patreon www.patreon.com/posts/1-what-is-diary-88554106
