Do we still need bookshops?
What's the future of bookshops? Do we still need them in 21st century? Is it time to close them down? I believe we need bookshops today more than we did before. Bookshops provide serendipity, and give us a chance to discover what we don't yet know.
All the books that I recommend in this video were discovered not online, but in a bookshop. I seriously doubt I would discover any of them online since algorithms often base their recommendations on the products which we previously experienced.
I hope at least one of the books that I recommend in this video will end up in your reading list as well:
Darrin McMahon, Divine Fury: A History of Genius
Umberto Eco, The book of Legendary Lands
Erich Auerbach, Dante: Poet of Secular World
Michael Wood, The Road to Delphi
John Armstrong, Book on Beauty

I stumbled on Nietzsche in the public library when I was a teenager and after starting and giving up on "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" I tried "Beyond Good and Evil" By that time I was having a gap year between school and college and was working in a firework factory and I read "Beyond Good and Evil" in the Kaufmann translation in the works canteen and I was asked about it a lot by the folks I sat with (none of whom probably did school after 15 / 16 years old so it was interesting to try to explain it to folks with no background in philosophy) I actually enjoyed Ecce Homo but then I realised he was a big joker / witty writer.

Also worth mentioning is Samuel Johnson's opinion the advice that books, once started, should be read all the way through: "This is surely a strange advice; you may as well resolve that whatever men you happen to get acquainted with, you are to keep them for life. A book may be good for nothing; or there may be only one thing in it worth knowing; are we to read it all through?" (Quoted in Boswell's Life of Johnson.)

I've discovered "how to use" my brain, as when my wife dies, I had to take really care of myself, my kids relying on my physical/psychological wellbeing. So, at first decided to lose weight, taking care about what I was eating, then (re)-starting to read, to learn. Then discovered... journaling. Have now started 4 years ago to write down almost everything I can remember, want to remember/write, before going to bed, always at minimum 15 mns. I repeat a lot of things about my everyday life, this is how we also work… we're "animals" of habits. I've started a personalized learning plan, in which I'm counting the amount of time I'm spending per activity. Learning languages, reading, mind games, etc... this is how I, now, keep a track on myself. The only objective is to keep myself aligned on the matter/activity I've decided to go through. And journaling is a part of it, the "last" part of the day is dedicated to it. Always with pens, fountain pens (I like to change the "tool" I'm using to write, everyday I'm changing of pen), I've also started to learn to use a feather (which is quite different). I know that my kids had seen me writes, as I'm not closing the door of my room, and frankly, I don't really care if someone reads it. This is me, they know me. Nothing to hide from my kids. What I don't want to share, I'll keep it in my mind. Thank you to share with all this way of dealing with ourselves, there's always a way, and this is the way you're choosing for yourself. You can take example on "how to" do things, still you have to adapt it to your way of living/doing.

Mozart was in full contact with the divine as far as I can see for his Requiem Mass ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL from beginning to end. What is beauty? I too am not a fan of modern art. Beauty is truth and Truth is beauty according to the quote. I agree with this, beauty answers a question that we didn't know we were asking.

Don’t take modern art so serious: it’s more about an intellectual exercise between a group of friends. Or a intelectual group, or a pseudo-elite one. The group itself is not that important: just another influence circle. About the meaning of modern art: it doesn’t have any, and doesn’t need any. And also don’t need our appreciation or love. I even think is quite suitable to the movement to give it our heartfelt disdain. Love your content. 🤩 cheers from Lisbon, from an art critic and art theory masters student.

  • @melmoththewanderer9396

I have a large collection of books (3-4, 000) comprising various topics including Art, History, Astronomy, Literature (including the great Umberto), Science Fiction among several other categories but I confess to having many unread books or books that I have partially read or otherwise consulted. I think that its not a matter so much of how many books one has read but rather what one retains from one's reading - two very different things. I think that I qualify for the term "tsundoku" as I had a specific reason for buying my books over many decades but never indiscriminately buying them just for the sake of buying them. Books are like old friends and you can read them again and again and find something new each time or at least refresh yourself with the parts you may have forgotten, and books are like milestones on one's journey through life. There are some books that one can read and reread any number of times and never grow tired of doing so. I find it so sad that books are being replaced by all that electronic stuff because there is a lot of pleasure in holding a book in one's hands rather than reading from a screen. I suppose that Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 resonates deeply within me for some of the reasons given above. Greeting to fellow book lovers from Sydney.

There are good bookshops and bad. The bigger the bookshop, I find, the more chance I have of finding things I would read, but sometimes the smaller ones just have the titles they think their customers will want, as is often the case with libraries as well. This leads to acres of "Staff Picks" and "Summer Reading" tables, with a lot of similar, rubbishy reads on offer, and the discerning reader has to search online for what they want instead. I think if I could chose one book from your reading list it might be the Eco one, but you seem to always be able to get your hands on good books for us to look at, and what a nice spot to present them from! I'm an artist and I would say that personally I don't feel I have any kind of special access to a supernatural or divine source for my art, but I do very much draw on my strong sense of being me, in the moment, to stay "in the flow" of making art, and I think from discussion with, and watching other artists at work, it is this presence with what is happening, and the ability to be totally in it, that helps create a good artwork. Arts function, of course, is not just to be beautiful, and it doesn't have to be that, or convey that, to be good art. It can just be thought provoking, although it has to have something tying it all together; sadly these day, often a long essay (a bit like this comment) which isn't the artwork, but legitimises it, since getting a thought out and calling it art are now labelled as a reasonable measure of what is art, since Duchamp really, with his urinal, and satirised so well by Warhol's copies of copies. Arts are often a bit philosophising, in their thought processes, and I've never met an artist who I thought was any good who wasn't also very well read. To get the good stuff to output, you've got to also input good stuff; sensory perceptions, books, friends or acquaintances, environment etc.

Dante is the most important poet of the Italian literature and the founder of our actual language without any doubt. First, the backdrop is wonderful for recording and reading, except for the occasional helicopter or strolling couple. 😉 Next, it would take me 10 minutes to get into your sitting position - and at least twice that time to get up. Next, I agree that the Latham book is terrific and the serendipity of the used book store is a wonder. My favorite is only 20 minute drive away. I would seriously be lost without it. Next, I have put the McMahan, Anderson, and Wood books in my shopping cart for a June 1 buy. I am seriously overextended for May. Finally, I would like to pose a question if I may: what are the best movies about books. Not movies based upon a book, but ones where the book features prominently in the tale. My favorites are 84 Charing Cross Road, The Neverending Story, The Dead Poets’ Society, and The Holdovers. My son in law likes The Ninth Gate. I am too old to do the HP experience, so I can’t vote on them. Thoroughly enjoyed this video.

I have been keeping a journal/diary for over 30 years, and it started with a red spiral notebook and a crystal Bic pen. I started writing because I had no one I could talk to about the thoughts and feelings swimming through my mind, without them judging, ridiculing, or minimizing my thoughts and feelings. I realized quickly that getting my thoughts out on paper was therapeutic, and the physical act of writing helped me make sense of everything, and helped in the thinking process of resolving difficulties or in truly understanding what the root was of everything I was thinking and feeling. My used and unused journal stash is huge, as is my collection of ink pens that I love writing with. Having a pretty journal and nice pens to write with also helps, at least for me. It's the little things sometimes.
