On Friday May 19 we’re thrilled to be hosting drum ‘n’ bass pioneer and all-round legend Goldie alongside dynamic duo Ulterior Motive for a special Metalheadz session, in what promises to be a high-octane final Lab LDN showcase in our search for the Label Of The Decade.
Goldie boasts one of the most distinguished careers in UK dance music. Metalheadz has been a hotbed for innovation and first-rate music since its inception in 1994; his personal discography is equally impressive, encompassing multiple studio albums and many timeless tunes; and he's even been awarded an MBE, which he threatened to melt following fabric’s temporary closure.
After growing up in the Wolverhampton care system, Goldie’s journey to the top of the game has been explosive, which his forthcoming memoir All Things Remembered promises to chart in “uncensored, hard-hitting” detail.
Ulterior Motive will join Goldie for the Metalheadz Lab LDN showcase. The South Coast-hailing pair have established themselves among the label’s esteemed roster with a string of fine releases over the past four years, including 2014 debut LP ‘The Fourth Wall’ and recent Record Store Day collaboration with Goldie ‘I Adore You’. About 4-5 years ago Goldie was performing at a club in Vancouver, BC, when the fire alarm went off. It was a false alarm, but to turn it off the fire department had to be called, so to avoid deafening everyone, the power was cut and the club went nearly dim, running only on backup power generator (there were a few bulbs on that it could power). Out of nowhere comes out a guy with a goddamn tuba, and starts playing it. Goldie starts putting the beat with his knuckles. It was going on for good 30 minutes like that until the firemen came. The vibe was amazing that night.
In the early 2000s Goldie skipped like 3 Toronto shows, what a dick.

I was at the Blue Note. The Bass Clef basement club yeah? 53 now, cancer survivor, jaded. God, can't believe how much I partied. Feel in my 20s again listening to this. 1990s London night life was fabulous. Eating fresh bagels at dawn before going home.
I love the way d'n'b sets are like a book or video game: they take time to get going, and to get in to, but then they take on a life and form of their own, and you are part of a journey. I'm only 30 mins in, but it's rollin' at this point.
True, you could argue this for most deep styles of dance music
I had some crazy ketamine and acid experience to a hard ass Drum and Bass mix and it was like I was in a video game.

@@GullySyde28 I was at the State Palace the night they are talking about, and Goldie was so drunk he was coming from behind the tables and dancing while he was mixing. I remember it was the first time I saw him and we were smoking spliffs (tobacco and bud) and that is something we don't do, but Goldie insisted.

Absolute belters and great mixing on both accounts, both old skl and new. That blend on Goldie's set between Brown Paper Bag and Rumble was fire. Never thought those 2 chunes would go together but DAYM was I proven wrong!

One of the first dnb sets I ever heard was a metalhesdz essentially mix. The tune that got me hooked was cool and deadly by digital and lutin. Canny beat a bit of drum and bass lads. Gurning all over the gaff
