  • Robert Reich breaks down how the mainstream media draws a false equivalence between the right and the left and misleads the public about what's really at stake.
Watch More: The Real Political Battle in America ►► • The Real Political Bat...
The mainstream media has historically tried to balance left and right in its political coverage, and present what it views as a reasonable center.
That may sound good in theory. But the old politics no longer exists and the former labels “left” versus “right” are outdated. Today it’s democracy versus authoritarianism, voting rights versus white supremacy.
There’s no reasonable center between these positions, no justifiable compromise. Equating them is misleading and dangerous. Don't fall for it.

that doesn't make any sense. Maybe you want to read up on the meaning of political right and political left:
Right: pro inequality, pro privilege, pro discrimination. The origins of the political right is the nobility defending their right to exploit the common people. Today they defend the right of the financial nomility to exploit, surprise, the common people. And yes, if you put it that way it sounds dumb. Probably because it is - for common people at least.
Left: Equal chances, equal rights and duties.
So since we lieve in an unjust privilege that criminalizes poverty, but supports exploitation, privilege, and let's rich people get away with everything (see the opioid-crisis) the left is *not* conservatives.
But the right can very well be liberal. Not with peoples rights to be equal, like gay rights or womens suffrage, but with deregulation that lets corporations gamble harder, exploit more, and pay even less taxes. The banking crisis for example is the direct consequence of the republican deregulation of the banking sector.

@@NebraskaGonvilleJones Zach has just scratched the surface. There are so very many more. That he allows people to believe he is an economist (or has any grasp of the subject) is a lie of omission. His five myths about the minimum wage are not myths in the slightest and each of his supposed rebuttals are all lies. How many times has he repeated the outright lie that workers pay has "stagnated" when, in fact, workers have never been better compensated in history, making half again more than they did in the 1970s and it increased in every decade (likely all the way back to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution)? How many times has he argued that unions were responsible for higher pay, better working conditions, the shorter work week, reduced discrimination, the end of child labor, etc.? Every last one of those claims is factually wrong.
Look at his last three shorts. In just 38 seconds he repeats the medical bankruptcy myth, the long disproved notion that billionaires pay less taxes than school teachers (or secretaries), the anti-scientific notion that the planet is "burning" (twice) or that "scientists" call for drastic action to "avert total climate catastrophe", the myth that minimum wage laws lift people out of poverty, that Exxon "buried their own science about climates change" (the cherry-picked documents that were supposedly the smoking gun were publicly available - so it's a lie even if you find InsideClimate News to be an unbiased and credible source).
One can dismiss objective reality as being "anger" but then maybe it's not anger issues that are the problem but aggressive ignorance and blindness to the bald-faced liar that is Robert Reich.

It can be argued that "[t]he continual lies have [undermined] the Nation, and the media are going along with it" put that hardly excuses you doing nothing less.
No one can seriously claim that anyone is incapable of getting a valid ID (which is why solid majorities *of each race* support voter ID laws! - it's actually quite insulting to presume anyone can't get one). Under the Texas law (now considered the end of the world) IDs can include a drivers license, an Election Identification Certificate, a Personal Identification Card, a handgun license, a Military Identity Card, a US Citizenship Certificate or a US Passport (any of which can be up to 4 years out of date) and, if you can't produce any of those, you can provide an affidavit as to why you could not accompanied by a copy or original of a) a government document that shows the voter’s name and an address, including the voter’s voter registration certificate; b) a current utility bill; c) a bank statement; d) a government check; e) a paycheck; or
      f) a certified domestic birth certificate.
Voter nullification?!?!?! Anyone too incompetent to obtain any of these won't be able to find their own house, let alone a polling place.
Lesser access to polls? How stupid does someone have to be to even pretend that isn't obvious drivel?!?! Texas so wants to restrict voting that they were the first state to adopt early voting after 222 years with no state having any such thing without the Republic collapsing. The new law *expands* voting hours from previous law (from 7am-7pm to 6am-10pm and mandates weekend hours be available as part of the continued early voting policy. And poll watchers of *ANY* party are permitted free access. It does *NOT* permit them to interfere (and if you don't think leftist poll watchers wouldn't challenge white voters if such interference were possible, that last brain cell does long before you got anywhere near here.
Either you are so unimaginably stupid you actually believe the odiferous mounds you're shoveling or you are lying your ass off. The only remaining alternative is: both. If you take Reich, Seder, Dore, Olbermann, Uygur, Noah, Maher, Pakman or Wolff serious, that last option is a certainty.

Indeed. You've described all the problems leading to this, but in some ways, the 'outrage' media kept crying wolf about insignificant things, and when we got Trump the real outrageous things could not be called out any more forcefully than all the little crap being outraged about in the past.

Preach! Thank you for representing the truth as it becomes an increasingly rare thing to witness. I fear media titans are quickly learning methods to supplant their agenda in the minds of people. Small nudges over time. I still can't convince my anxiety-ridden mother to stop watching local news. Even after learning about Sinclair, she struggles to reconcile her distorted view of reality with her media consumption. She's voted democrat consistently, to be clear. But people should recognize the forces (Sinclair, Murdoch) at work here have subverted traditional party lines and expectations to covertly further their goals.

The media has, over the past few decades, replaced "moderate" with "corporate."
To CORPORATE media, affordable healthcare IS as scary as fascism... maybe even more so.
We have just 5 giant companies that control 90% of media. They get advertising money from both sides and the so-called center.
They are PAID to keep us focused on culture war issues that only affect a small group but outrage most of us. This DISTRACTS us from focusing on things that we ALL want.
This way they maintain the status quo and rake in the money doing so.

I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Reich on this one. Most people today think news reporters are supposed to merely give us the facts, then we can make our decisions based on the facts. That is not what good news reporters should do. They should tell the truth. If a politician tells an obvious lie they should call it out as a lie. They should not rely on the audience to discern it for a like because the audience may not have seen the or read the info that proves the politician is lying. Today we consider Edward R. Murrow as the epitome of excellence in reporting. Murrow did not just give us the facts. He gave us the truth. He told us when people were lying or when someone is trying to fool us. Reporters should follow in his footsteps.

One of the most important things to note about the political divide is that the rich are just getting richer. The more polarized the politics the bigger the gap between the haves and the have nots. The haves decrease and their rage and blame as to who took it are fueled by the privileged, who are taking from the have nots. Political inequality is also financial inequality. Nothing exists in a void. These things are interconnected

The problem with economics as it is understood in America, is that there is no distinction between wealth production and wealth extraction. Production of goods and services speaks for itself, but monopolies and the banks (FIRE, finance, insurance, and real estate) extract what is called economic rent. The free market Adam Smith talked about is free FROM economic rent, not free FOR economic rent.

When you cant understand why so many people believe something that you do not believe, It is highly probable that your own belief should be put to the test, instead of doubling down and dehumanizing the other side. When each side is being told that the other is evil and not worth talking to, then there is a real disconnect of information. If you cannot challenge your own beliefs and cross the isle to think like those that think differently, then the problem is within you!

These divisive labels do nothing to address the fact that we are giving our power away when we don't realize this capitalistic system relies on our buying into it. United we stand divided we fall.
