CNN is corporate media no matter what MAGA claims so they want to appear "balanced" and therefore they want to appease their consumers. It's why completely free media just doesn't work. I think for political debates there should be legal standards. I think there should be an agency for truth that you can apply to in order to earn the right to use the title "news". The key part though is that there is no crackdown on free speech but just making it more difficult to be considered news. Also allowing news agencies to be sued for knowingly spreading falsehoods is important. Encouraging truth without treading on freedom of speech is a tricky balance but one we should tackle. I think there should be legal standards for "news" channels that they have to meet and there should also be a publically funded alternative similar to the BBC to have a channel with non-capitalist incentives.
Trump spends his days complaining. Biden spends his days working, being president. Whatever we think about the debate, this debate was on top of the President's responsibilities. All Trump does is complain, sit in court, and play golf.

I am in fair agreement with your observations of both Biden and Trump but from a more macro level, why did the media glom on to assessing Biden’s performance when it should have been equal or on trump first since yes, he did lie and gaslight the public for 90 mins. But Biden, fresh off 8 years as VP, chose to step aside, thereby making a Trump presidency more likely. If he had run in 2016, we would almost certainly be rid of Trump in politics. But the thought of someone challenging Hillary Clinton within the Democratic Party was unthinkable to Democratic party elites like Biden.

I hope they look into what exactly caused last night's poor showing. That was much, much worse than just a typical "off day" for Joe. Was he drugged? Did he take a strong cold medicine? I won't repeat myself with my comment on Substack about the inept moderators, but you mentioning the questions that weren't asked, important questions, this is my biggest complaint about these so-called debates. I would like to see a system put in place where voters could submit questions [add-on: registered voters, incentive for registering] and then have those questions be judged by a panel that INCLUDES some number of "average" voters, to be used for something called a debate: "A discussion...a discussion!...between people in which they express different opinions about something." [And none of that nonsensical bullshit, "You have 3.5 seconds for a rebuttal."] From what I have observed, whoever chooses the questions are never the "the smartest people in the room".

Anyone who needed this debate to figure out what each candidate is like and what they stand for is dumber than the rock they've been living under for the last decade. 10-15 minutes' worth of research on the net in 2015 was all I needed to know about Trump and his vile behavior and corruption.
Despite having much more ability than trump, Biden’s lack of charisma, showmanship and issues with age puts him in real danger of losing. America seems to love a carnival barker and is not concerned with trumps lack of ability or track record. They’ll go with style over substance. The DNC and wealthy donors need to nominate someone like Newsome quickly though it may already be too late. Democrats need someone that can win - don’t know that Biden is that guy.
Coverage said that the President had been laboring under a bad cold (tested and negative for COVID-19). Perhaps he even had antihistamines that would have clouded him, too. Given these two candidates, I will vote to re-elect President Biden even if he required daily CPR.
Here's the thing: The debate was not about policy, but rather it was a demonstration of the ability to lead, a show of appearances if you will. And Biden's team completely flopped. It will not inspire confidence among the undecided regardless of Biden's track record and policy. People rarely vote on that basis, but it's more akin to a popularity contest, sadly. Whoever appears the most vigorous, charismatic, capable and in charge will get the vote. Biden, sadly is no longer able to perform his duties and Democrats should seriously consider a replacement, otherwise Trump will win.

CNN is corporate media no matter what MAGA claims so they want to appear "balanced" and therefore they want to appease their consumers.
It's why completely free media just doesn't work. I think for political debates there should be legal standards. I think there should be an agency for truth that you can apply to in order to earn the right to use the title "news". The key part though is that there is no crackdown on free speech but just making it more difficult to be considered news. Also allowing news agencies to be sued for knowingly spreading falsehoods is important.
Encouraging truth without treading on freedom of speech is a tricky balance but one we should tackle. I think there should be legal standards for "news" channels that they have to meet and there should also be a publically funded alternative similar to the BBC to have a channel with non-capitalist incentives.

I’m not happy with CNN debate rules allowing trump to revisit the prior question, so much that moderators had to shut him up because he wasn’t answering the current question. But Biden, fresh off 8 years as VP, chose to step aside, thereby making a Trump presidency more likely. If he had run in 2016, we would almost certainly be rid of Trump in politics. But the thought of someone challenging Hillary Clinton within the Democratic Party was unthinkable to Democratic party elites like Biden.

I would like to see a system put in place where voters could submit questions [add-on: registered voters, incentive for registering] and then have those questions be judged by a panel that INCLUDES some number of "average" voters, to be used for something called a debate: "A discussion...a discussion!...between people in which they express different opinions about something." [And none of that nonsensical bullshit, "You have 3.5 seconds for a rebuttal."]
From what I have observed, whoever chooses the questions are never the "the smartest people in the room".

Despite having much more ability than trump, Biden’s lack of charisma, showmanship and issues with age puts him in real danger of losing. America seems to love a carnival barker and is not concerned with trumps lack of ability or track record. They’ll go with style over substance. Here's the thing: The debate was not about policy, but rather it was a demonstration of the ability to lead, a show of appearances if you will. And Biden's team completely flopped. It will not inspire confidence among the undecided regardless of Biden's track record and policy. People rarely vote on that basis, but it's more akin to a popularity contest, sadly. Whoever appears the most vigorous, charismatic, capable and in charge will get the vote. Biden, sadly is no longer able to perform his duties and Democrats should seriously consider a replacement, otherwise Trump will win.
