From a layman's point of view, if Piastri's contract wasn't activated by end of July 31st, then on August 1st he is free to go elsewhere. As for Alpine seeking compensation for the costs associated with Piastri's formative years.. Tough tatas, Piastri met his obligations until the expiration of his contract. Is there something to be said about personal morality and ethical behaviour? Possibly, but let's face it, there are many big companies that throw ethics and morality to the wind when it comes down to cold hard cash. Can't blame a youngster for doing likewise. Tough luck Alpine, you got played playa!

Honestly, there are multiple things to say here.
First off, it's Alpine fault to sign a multiyear contract with ocon and basically making him driver #1. They just do this purely because he's French and the team boss is also French (and Renault is also French) so yeah it's a marketing move but at cost of growth and potential better drivers.
Alpine also has stated that they weren't foreseen with Alonso's departure, meaning Piastri wouldn't have raced in 2023 for Alpine.
With that being said, this alone would already been enough for Piastri to leave in my opinion.
2ndly, Zack Brown also revealed that there are clauses in Daniel's contract, meaning he was hinting towards potential drivers from other teams to scout into McLaren. Piastri was one of them and he convinced McLaren to buy him over. Since Alpine still had the plan to go with Ocon (1) and Alonso (2) in 2023, this leaves Piastri no choice but to change team for the next season.
Leaving a guy who won all formula cups first try out for 2 years is way too long. Alpine missed their chance and they have to pay their price for the bad decision making.
edit: for the people thinking that Piastri "robbed" or "scammed" Alpine, this is not true. As Max said earlier this season, companies invest in drivers under contracts. They get their paid share back over time once they become an well established F1 driver. Meaning if Alphine had laid out a good contract, they won't lose their money and Piastri will still pay their investments in him back.

If they are going through this season to this point still with 2 other drivers on their books ahead of Piastr for 2023, he's got to be looking elsewhere. If they wanted him to be loyal to them, they had to be loyal to him and determine that one of the other drivers wasn't going to be there next year because Piastr was taking their seat. Alonso wasn’t interested in cashing in his chips at the end of the season so the best Alpine could offer Piastri was a seat at the Williams table, this wasn’t good enough for such an ambitious young driver so he made his own arrangements. But when Alonso signed with Aston Martin the deck got shuffled too late for Alpine who had unwittingly already lost the hand they thought they had. That’s poker, it was a clean game and Alpine lost but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t win Piastri back in another hand at some future time. Well, let's just put things into context here, if Alonso wasn't going to Aston Martin, Piastri wouldn't have been offered a drive at Alpine. So, in that sense, I don't fault him for looking for a drive elsewhere especially after Alpine missed the deadline of his contract. As for Otmar, he probably thought Piastri should have understood he was an "Alpine-groomed" driver who was always going to have a bright future with the team. But, it doesn't matter now, the unexpected chain of events have turned out as such, the only point I would raise is Piastri better hope and pray McLaren will have a vastly improved car for the 2023 season. The thing about the McLaren name is it hasn't been and isn't the McLaren of old anymore. The heydays have long been over ever since Hamilton left and they have had many years to try to climb back up to the top and they still haven't been able to do it. As for this year's car, you have already seen how many times Norris have been complaining about it. So, while Piastri might have been attracted by the supposedly and now misplaced "more sexy" name of McLaren, but if he is not careful it could easily turn out to be the wrong move for him, but we shall see.

Piastri seems to have burnt the bridge with Alpine at this point (at least publicly), which is nothing to tout when the team he refused is sitting ahead of the one he wants to be on and is improving much more. I hope it goes well for him in F1 if he gets a seat, but that’s a major red flag to sponsors and other teams if they know a driver will jump ship and throw any loyalty to the wind. I can respect his decision, but it’s definitely not a good look, especially for a rookie
Edit: One more thing to consider is how lightly Alpine took the “betrayal” or whatever you want to call it. Piastri should be thankful it wasn’t Ferrari or the Red Bull family because they would have cast him out the second they got the news. I doubt Renault would ever take him back, but other manufacturers might have a look at him in the coming years. However, the true test is will he perform in the McLaren or will he flop? He had to be out hunting for a seat for 2023. So the idea that he should be available just waiting for them to hand him a drive when Alonso left is a bit crazy. Imo Alpine had their chance to sign Oscar but dropped the ball in favor of Ocon, which sure got them a single win, but it ended up driving Alonso away, which I can't blame him for considering he had literally won championships with the team so he reasonably expected to be treated like the number 1 driver, but it seems that Alpine favored Ocon more.

@@FaceFish9 Norris, Verstappen, LeClerc and Russell all have one thing in common - they've all successfully had a season in F1 and proven themselves beyond F2. Regardless of his lower Formula success, Piastri hasn't shown he's actually got what it takes to be in F1, let alone with an attitude like he has. He could turn out to be another Schumacher - great name, decent record, but still only mediocre in the big time. He's another one who's attitude is doing him no favours. am i nuts for thinking that given what we know, Piastri might not have known beforehand that he was going to have a seat at Alpine next year and signed to another team himself (since Alpine were not able to sign him on loan to any team as we've seen)
and when he declined Alpine he did that cause he had already signed a contract? is that too far fetched?

Alphine's mgmt is at fault for not announcing after having a proper communication & deal with Piastri. Piastri on the other hand is too impatient to give the team a chance who invested their money and RESOURCES for SEVERAL YEARS on him.
