The “Digital Age” is creating opportunities for an entirely new creative expression never before known. This is simply brilliant on so many levels. Jacob Collier is leading this revolution in artistic expression, not only through performances like this but from his teaching as well. Simply brilliant!
The digital age... You do realize there are teens driving cars who have never known a world without CZcams, right? There are adults graduated from college, having their second child, who never knew a world without the web. The "digital age" started ages ago. This form of expression has been around for a while. What makes this video special is Jacob. What makes this video special is Dodie. What makes this video special is not the digital age.
@@error.418 digital age made this possible lol.. video editing to music production to recording have been made much cheaper and accessible because of the digital world.. plus he is able to share his music online as well.. yes jacob is the creative mind here.. but digital world enabled him to share his creativity with the world
@@aabc The "digital world" (a phrase to show how old you are without saying so) predates the Internet and enabled things that enabled other things that enabled this production. You might as well say abiogenesis enabled this video.

ok but can we appreciate how adorable this little back yard garden is..?
The same garden is featured in the Hajanga video, from which I surmise this is the garden of Jacob's family home -- and yes, it is darling (and so green!).
It makes me wonder if this kind of interaction ever happened in the Collier home: Jacob's Mom: Jacob, you promised you were going to cut the grass this week. Jacob: I know, I'm sorry -- I just got caught up working out this groove on the song I'm working on, and I forgot. Jacob's mom: You know the grass isn't going to cut itself!
Or are geniuses exempted from cutting the grass?
This is a super traditional/normal UK back garden, it made me feel nostalgic :)
To make a nice cover of a Beatles classic, you need a adorable backyard 😉. Have a look on the album "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard" by Paul McCartney... especially the cover of the disc...
Everyone in Ireland has a back garden this size😂
Ha! As of an hour ago, we know the answer: Jacob DOES cut the grass! In the video "Jacob Collier's Garden Groove," we see Jacob cut the grass with what looks like an old-fashioned scissor mower. We may conclude that tremendous talent does not, in fact, preclude having to do a few chores around the house. Next up: Jacob Collier shops at Tesco, and, sadly, nobody knows who he is (which, honestly, I imagine would be in many ways be a relief: I remember going into a bookstore in New York, some years ago, and seeing Phillip Glass browsing for something interesting to read; I thought of going up to him and being all fan--love--blah--blah, and deciding to just let him be a normal human who doesn't need to be performing the famous composer role all the time).
this is the personification of exactly what it feels like to be happy
ItsJustAndi the video yeah, but this song has always made me cry for some reason. I always just get really emotional when I hear it
I didn’t know that a song is a person.
@@CoolKat206 Me too. I cry because the feeling of joy this song gives me is overwhelming. Struggling with depression gives this song such an aura that makes me truly appreciate pure happiness. Also, Dodie is just so fucking cute and joyful that I can't help but smile.
Yes! So true!
I understand that you need a lot of clothes to do a collab with Jacob Collier.
Under-rated comment... 😂
Yeah and it seems like his wardrobe is almost infinite, the only shirt/sweater I’ve seen him wear multiple times is the white with a black square. It’s honestly hilarious and awesome
LMFAO
And go through umpteen different hairdos
you don't need a lot of clothes to be in a lil nas music video
You know what I love about Collier the most? It's that he's just... himself, no filter, and the "himself" is an absolute charming genius. Gotta love someone who's so honest. I now love his musical palette (it took me a little getting used to), but what I love MOST is his passion and how it's just in everything he does. I love this dude so much!!!
Well said! I agree totally
He’s shit bro
I am so glad Jacob does not look at life and music in a way that fits the norm
Fuck thats so true, at a simple view someone would just prejugde as another youtuber making another beatle cover, but this something else man, its so fucking creative!!! how it sound, how its played, how its thinked, it fills you emotionally; this is a great producer, a great musician and a great composer.

Here are all the references _I_ could find, no doubt there's a million I didn't catch
1:36 - Possible reference to the samba rhythm in all night long
1:47 - Reminds me of the flourish between the 1st two verses in Bakumbe but that could be just me
1:56 - Hajanga obviously
2:01 - Wiggle wiggle wiggle of course
2:08 - I'm not sure but I _think_ this is a reference to the "Go home" group vocal in Djesse
2:16 - "Djesse has a sky like a merry-go-round", also from Djesse and shows up at least once on Vol. 1, 2, and 3
2:39 - Call me crazy but I think the vocal that fades in here is a reference to the bit between the 1st and 2nd sections in Sky Above
3:15 - Of course this is just a regular count in but it also kinda reminds me of the bit in Sky Above between the 2nd and 3rd sections
3:36 - The vocal run that shows up in a few places throughout Djesse Vol. 2
I doubt this list is close to complete, it sounds like there are a billion more references in the samba section that were too quiet for me to make out, and probably also a few in the outro. I also didn't find the Djesse motif and would be blown off my feet if it weren't in here somewhere.
Thanks for these references :)

Aside from liking the music, I appreciate how much the dynamic range is preserved making it sound musical and spacious. A great deviation from the overly compressed music of today, a wonderful protest to the loudness war!
You know an artist cares about dynamic range when he decides his contrabass ought to drown the 23 other tracks of harmonization because that's how it sounds to the ear.
It's all about compromises, indeed against the "it should all fit equally" sound aesthetic that killed most modern mixes. Having a ton of tracks kind of incites a more natural mix, but someone else could've flattened it anyway =)
Cheers to this new generation remembering music should mainly feel alive, and not necesarily polished out of it's essence.
I'm not sure what you just said but I agree
@@sirzebra "cheers for this new generation for remembering music should feel alive" I think you're the only person ever to praise music from a newer generation then his own.
@@alonsan3977 Well if you feel that way, you need to meet a lot of new people, i'm not the only one =)
I'm not that old, but i know a lot of older music enhtousiasts that can dislike artists such as jacob, while still praising it's true effort and musicality. i also know a lot that are more than happy to see that in this day and age, true geniuses can attain mainstream levels of recognition without "producing" but rather creating.
My father made me listen to Nina simone, i introduced him to Common, he made me cry with Petrucciani, i showed him the compteporary Jazz scene with Collier, Dayes, Henry, Glasper and so many more... I knew you were arranging this song! A few months back I saw you playing it in an instagram story. Am I right, am I right!!!! We love you. Our Mozart in the 21st century.❤
Exactly!
Mozart's too basic, I'd say he's more like Bach with all that counterpoint and polyphony and shtuff.
@@brokenredbench96 Mozart is not basic, he could give some great counterpoint but if you don't pay attention you'll definitely miss them, that's the genius of Mozart. Same goes for Jacob.
@@brokenredbench96 I was thinking more of the sense of joy in his music (insane harmony, talent and genius aside), but yeah, you may be right 😊.
Hmm, if we think harmony Mozart seems right as well. At the same time, Beethoven towards the end of his career had a lot of harmonious shtuff, like pathetique. I think we can conclude Jacob basically has a little bit of everything.
Jacob is bringing back the best of musicianship, it is that simple, a prismatic attitude, a fierce love of harmony and skill, and a super ambition to stay sane.
I'm just going to have to say it. Jacob is the best musical artist to arrive in my lifetime....and I've been alive since Eisenhower.
Another one of Jacob's indecisions to go all in for one certain vibe. Instead we're left with this stew of sounds that provide little to no replayability.
