Hey Andrew! Nice to see you enjoying this beauty also!
I want you and Jacob having a collab. I think your bleep bloop vibe and super good voice would fit Jacob’s mind blowing music !
WHEN IS THE VIRTUAL RIOT VIDEO COMING OUT? 😱
Woa... youre the real Andrew
Appreciate your work, you were the one who got me into the music creation world and I could not live without it :)
The fact that you're freaking out over this music too would explain why you haven't uploaded in an eternity.
I'm pretty sure Collier is his own music genre.
actually, this is kinda true xD
Agreed
Ehimetalor Akhere Unuabona you’ve said a mouth full! There is none like him.
he's extremely talented and combines lots of different genres but I wouldn't say it's a new genre. the middle section of this song is clearly inspired by Parliament

O Yes it feels bad being number two, doesn’t it?
heyyyy there
I feel like this song it's trying to communicate a feeling that I'm not capable of receiving
You are capable. We are all capable.
"Keep in motion,
Stay unspoken,
When I'm broken,
Keep me open."
We just have to be open.
Change starts with loving yourself, as you are.
Your strengths AND weaknesses.
After that, you will see there is no difference,
from you and me.
Only parts of a whole, sent to be.
You have all the tools you need within.
So what's stopping you? Begin.

The sensation of crack, heroin, and meth

No hand to hold, no star to guide
No tears to cry, no fire to burn

I've seen crazier. Traveling, Passion (Sanctuary), and Sakura Drops by Utada Hikaru and any pre-2018 video Kyary Pamyu Pamyu put out.
Take a look for one of Flying Lotus MV and you will get why Jacob listens his music (except the collaboration mv, it’s just okay and not trippy)
Alot of similar stuff visually in Time to Pretend by MGMT too

@@lamusicacomountodo4396 I see you making a lot of Zappa comments in this video. Zappa didn't "invent" these people but inspired, in the same way Zappa is influenced by other musicians.
Question is, does it come to stay?
Just magic...... just at the right time
Having depression makes me feel super empty all the time. Like every second of my day is just blah. This song had me smiling and feeling from the start. It feels good to just feel :)
Lorelei well done for putting that out there. I've been in the blackest of holes and music always pulls me out. Don't feel bad for feeling bad was what a friend said to me once and I've always carried that statement with me. I remind myself that I am going to feel bad sometimes and that's not a true reflection of my complete person but only the depressed and anxious person that rears its head sometimes. I am more valuable than my anxious and depressive moments.
Much care and love from the UK

When Aimee Nolte and Adam Neely happen to be in the same comment section, you can surely tell it's a Jacob's video
Jacob’s Law of Sound:
If you wear a fur hat, it amplifies the stank effects of your bass by W (number of watts from amp) Times pi plus the gauge of the string.
Edit: thanks for the likes holy crap. I forgot to take into account the stank effects of different pedals and the use of microtones. Im not sure of those formulas, but im sure other funkologists have the answer and appropriate formulas.
lmfao this is a very good comment, congratulations sir
Additionally, he reserves his fur hat *specifically* for bass voices (either sung or played)
The fur hat protects him from the negative side effects of producing that much stank
Rendy Irawan but any poor soul near him gets a massive dose of negative groove which in some cases, has been shown to be fatal.

i like how most of the top comments are from musicians here on youtube
The way I interpret this song - and I could be completely wrong - is that it takes you on the wave of emotions that comes with falling in love, and wanting to lose control and go wild with this person (perhaps physically, but also in a life-adventure type of way).
Falling in love in its purest sense is something so ecstatic and wild and joyous - there's the excitement of physical intimacy, the excitement this person gives you in your heart and mind, the joy it is to be loved by someone. They bring on the "butterflies in your stomach" kind of jitters, they bring this new adventure of learning about them and exploring life with them, the joy of holding their hand, being intimate, dancing with them. As someone who has had the fortune of falling in love with an amazing woman recently, I can attest to this personally. The vast differences in sections of this song speak to the different things love does to us - the unknown, the thrill, etc.
What strikes me most about this interpretation is the ending (4:46). It goes from this wild, eclectic arrangement to a much simpler, solemn refrain. To me, it sounds like a request: "Keep in motion, stay unspoken. If I'm broken, keep me open." It hit me as a realization of your sense of vulnerability - that as much as you don't want to admit it and you just want to have things keep moving along as they have been (keep in motion, stay unspoken) - that's not all love is. The more you are with this person, the more they will see you - the REAL you. You will share in your deepest joys with them, the confusion and fun of not knowing how to make the relationship work but you'll do it anyway... but you will also share in your brokenness. To keep love of any kind alive, you have to be open despite the mess.
Perhaps not a totally "accurate" interpretation, but after reviewing the lyrics and listening multiple times, musically and thematically this is how it made me feel. Thanks for reading if you made it this far :) more importantly, enjoy Jacob Collier's outstanding musical arrangements. A true class act.
excellently said ❤
Woah.
Thank you. 💜♥️
love. I remember a video from lianne la habas had a very similar picture, looking yourself at a broken mirror and suddenly watching everything clear. I have had this moments too, everyone really, when you just "get it" and could not be more simple, its a manic sensation, just like pure love and extasis at once but all comes to an end, and you shatter... nothing is like it used to be. "Keep in motion, stay unspoken. If I'm broken, keep me open." hits me as a prayer to move on even if you are shattered, because frankly we all are.
It is, I imagine, non-literal.

I think this is a song that you need to listen to 3 or 4 times before it gets really good. I'm listening to this for what must be the tenth time now and it's better than it ever has been. Everything feels like it makes more sense because of the mere exposure effect (and maybe some other stuff too) and I still get to enjoy all the amazing sounds.
Definitely agree. These types of songs usually end up as favorites after a few listens.
But that's the thing: repitition justifies (almost) anything to our mind. It's debatable whether it's a good thing to make stuff that Needs that repitition to be enjoyed. If it's 3-4 times its prob ok tho.
@@user-cn4qb7nr2m repetition legitimizes if the repetition is legitimate. Listening to a song multiple times isn't the same as having something happen in a song multiple times. Many songs get boring or annoying after many listens, this one, for me, does not.

It's like Collier's post-genre multi-tempo/key Bohemian Rhapsody.

John Doe gotta agree, it’s a happy tune...
To be fair to Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody had multiple tempos and if I remember it right, more than one key as well.
I've had milder acid trips than this song.
@You GNAR! i listened to it tripping acid and peaking on a few whippets. Absolutely incredible.
Little did we know this was the seed of all the themes expressed in Djesse Vol. 4 (even the cover art being from a glass sculpture!!)
I know I am broken, so let me stay open as well
3:26 Listen for a subtle “Get it” 😂😂
Thats awesome!
An interpretation. Only one of many possible interpretations.
Imagine endeavoring to seek inside yourself for that special elusive "something," you know, the storied "thing that was inside you all along"? 0:20
Discovering that there is such a thing as "inside yourself" 0:35
Catching that first glimpse of that "elusive something" 0:48
Initially, when you see it, you just follow it and enjoy the journey. You feel whole, for a moment. 1:27
What was a saunter now becomes a run. It becomes less about the journey, and more about finding that "thing," wondering what it is, and how to fully grasp it. 2:16
[For the record, the "somebody" he/she needs to understand his soul doesn't have to be a person. It could be a "thing."]
The chase feels good. As it should. Because you feel active. You feel like you have a goal. Often, people feel like they have a purpose just because they happen to be actively doing something. Even if it's not necessarily the right thing to do. 2:19
You love the chase, but things aren't really quite right around you. You're sacrificing your normalcy for the sake of the chase. It doesn't really matter to you, but to the rest of life around you, it's bothersome. Things start going crazy. To you, it's banality that's being disrupted, so you don't care. But to the universe around you, it's stability that's being disturbed. And it's an unworthy sacrifice. 2:54
The thing you're chasing leads you to the funk. After all, it should all lead to the funk. The groove. The sweet spot. 3:19
Stability? Who gives a crap anymore? I found the funk! 3:52
It feels good, but you can't stay in the funk forever. So, again, the journey takes a back seat. Again, it's all about the "thing." And now, finally, it's within reach. You lunge out to grab it, 4:40,
and when you do, it shatters your psyche. Everything you've ever known about everything is turned on its head. The thing that was supposed to be your saving grace shatters your own stability. 4:46
So now you're left with nothing. No security. No simplicity. Just shattered remains of what once was. You do have a voice. Which doesn't sound so bad in theory, but imagine having a voice with nothing to say. You have the means to express what you feel, but not enough understanding to make it make sense to anyone. Hence, the shattered face with only the mouth lit up. 4:46
So what do you do when you can't talk about what you're going through? You "Keep in motion, stay unspoken." You just keep living. Keep being. And hope, that even with this new discovery, this new way of life, things will eventually start to fall in place and make sense again. 5:38
The experience you have gone through will never be as palpable to others as it was to you. So now, you're left to rationalize what's going on "inside yourself" with the life you live on the "outside." They'll never know, but you'll never forget it. 6:41.
Cheers to the chase, Djesse.
Nice. I've been getting parts of this and it was really satisfying to see it in writing. Thanks for taking the time!
Its not palpable to others "stay unspoken" but you and I is we. the "thing" is there. for all of us. "keep me open"

2:42... I got a stroke trying to understand the rythm there.... 10/10 will have a stroke again.
Polyrhythm... maybe?
Polymeter. 4:4 against 9:16
but with the love in our hearts somehow we found Jacob ❤

We've finally found our 21st Century Bohemian Rhapsody
This is the song that made me fall in love with this guy. He’s got the creativity to deliver the sound of madness and chaos in a way that makes sense.
This truly made me realize so much within me. Your level of self understanding is so attainable. Meaning if you can do it anyone can. But your inspiration for ones motivation to find themselves is so deeply beautiful yet of course hard to grasp for most people. But for me... this is so incredibly deep if I put myself in your perspective. I'm truly in love with your creation Jacob. Thank you for all you do. It's helped me so much in better understanding our world.

@@oldskoolstepup Just a person having a connection with the music fam
None of us was ready. Also, the song's layout is easier to understand thanks to this video. Great job!
The fucking beat drop at 3:18 made me pull a muscle
Is anyone else hearing a shit ton of early Prince in this? I love this guy 😍
A lot of Prince in this dude.....!!!!
Especially the bass playing - definitely a big influence on the more outre outbursts of bass. Lovely stuff!
This is some unorthodoxically good music. This track is bursting with colour. So many interesting sounds, rhythms and harmonies.
His music gives you the feeling that it was made by a person who just likes to have fun with sound and see what comes out of it.
Can't imagine where this kid is going to be in 10 years. I just hope he does not get sidetracked by all the distractions that come with fame because his future sure looks bight.
The mixed response to this song is pretty fascinating and makes a great case study for thinking about the different elements that make music good or not. He's clearly a genius (depending on how you define such a term). His mastery of the basic elements of music is profound and deeply integrated into a unique artistic personality. So there's skill and originality present. He's also not just jerking off. There's genuine exploration and expressive intent. He's trying to tell a story, and I do think he cares about taking the listener with him. So there's authentic communication going on as well.
So what could be missing? Maybe you think there's nothing missing, in which case we could just agree to disagree, but though I enjoyed it, for me there is a nagging sense of "sound and fury, signifying nothing" going on. There’s a couple things that could explain that.
First, an excessive concern with technical complexity. This seems to be built pretty deeply into his musical personality, and must in part stem from being so technically gifted. I imagine that for him a large part of what makes music engaging is that it explores some new technical domain, as opposed to some non-technical emotional domain. I don’t think this is exclusively what he cares about by any means (case and point being the remarkably simple ending section), but perhaps the balance is skewed too far in that direction.
Second, and perhaps this is the crucial bit, it seems that the content of what he’s communicating is lacking some substance. I think this could in part be a result of the first point above, but I think it could be deeper than that. It’s as if the technical challenge is too much a reason for his playing music at all… that seems presumptuous obviously, but it’s just a hypothesis. One commenter described this song as “disney music in weird time signatures”. That seems a bit harsh, but the point is that it seems a little fluffy some how, as if there’s a darker or more serious element that’s lacking.
It makes me think about two artists. Van Gogh and Bach. Both were intimate acquaintances with the darker side of existence. Van Gogh spent years as a “preacher” living in some of the worst conditions of poverty imaginable, and struggled with mental health his whole life, eventually committing suicide. Both of Bach’s parents died before he was 10, and half of his 20 children died before adulthood. Who knows to what extent or in what way these things had an impact on their art, but it certainly makes one wonder if it had something to do with the profundity of what they eventually created.
Now, no one can peer into another person’s soul and judge how much they have suffered, but I wonder to what extent Jacob Collier’s music would deepen if his life were to fall apart in some significant way for a period of time. I wouldn’t necessarily wish that, but I do wonder. Deep suffering can disintegrate the trivial in one’s life and art if one lets it.
I care because it’s obvious how gifted he is, and pending any major disasters, he’s got a lot of music making left in him. Even if he just continued to make music of this caliber, I would certainly not complain. It’s a great thing that he’s making music like this. But still, how will things change in the next 20 years? It’s interesting in part because I’ve heard him make the argument that absorbing technical “information” alone is meaningless without attaching it to some emotional core. He clearly is aware of this conflict between technique and substance. He also has said that he was obsessed with absorbing information alone for a substantial period of time. It’s as if he’s still discovering exactly what he wants to say with such a vast capacity for the craft of music making. I for one am going to stick around while he continues to figure it out. Someone with such tremendous dynamism will never be boring to follow.
Kendall Burks hey that was pretty good
Benis bourget as in, you agree? I’ve listened to the song maybe 8 more times, and I’m not precisely sure if I am of the same mind. It’s the best thing I’ve heard of his output.
Kendall Burks yeah I definitely agree
Well said
Thanks for this awesome comment! Personaly, I think he is in the mood of musicians like Michael Jackson (maybe the great patrono for this sounds Jacob like to make), more preoccupied in making music fun to listen and to dance (thanks to June Lee we can know Jacob made us move our mental hips in 9/8 or 7/8, a really tricky thing). He has some pieces of greater emotional appeal, lyrics better writed/with deeper meaning, like in the case of Bathtub, or my personal favourite In the Real Early Morning, and I prefer a meaningful lyric instead of an intricated harmony/rythm, but as you well said up here, its gonna be difficult to be bored with Jacob in years to come. He is not the kind of static think-I-am-a-genius-one, he is generous and a born-researcher, and will present us with God knows what, cause this song right here was almost too far for my more limited comprehension. Wish to live to see his divenire! Greetings and thx for reading.
ok we can all agree that the best part is 3:18

I love this song.
It gets real deep after the glass shattering snare shot. That last section is so vulnerable and honest. Every time I get to that section, the lyrics speak different meanings, paint different pictures, and evoke different emotions. Your music is many things in life, Jacob. So beautiful and brilliant. Thank you.

Absolutely adore this song. About an hour into a hike with my family, we stopped for a snack break. Bust out the bluetooth speaker, and boogied down to this song on an empty mountain trail. It was a great day! Thank you for this beautiful gift.

No hand to hold me

He said: "I need somebody understands my soul,
Somebody to tell me where to go.
And I don't wanna be travelling on my own."
She said: "I’ll be the one, let me come along"
He said: "Do you wanna dance with me, do you wanna dance?
I've been sitting here too long
And my bones feel old, but my feet still young."
He said: "I've never met a girl I could hold so strong,
I'm never gonna do you wrong.
Now put your hands on me where they belong
And boogie with me all night long, woo!"
(Boogie with me all night long)
(Baby won’t you sing my song)
She said: "I need somebody who can move my feet,
Someone to make my heart beat.
And I don't want you talking to me soft and sweet."
He said: "I'll be the one to make you feel complete."
She said: "Do you wanna sing with me, do you wanna sing?
I've been talkin' here too long.
How can your bones feel old with a voice so young?"
She said: "Djesse got a sky like a, a merry-go-round
He don't ever make a sound.
Now put your hands on me baby. Touch the ground!
And give it to me up and down."

About fifteen years ago the origins for this type of music were coming out from independent artists who were either not on labels or on net labels offering free digital releases. It's great to see the production value and patronage increasing for these creative, complex, fun and frantic forms of alternative jazz and electronic.
