I don’t think people realize how much Datsyuk changed the game. He was so creative and so many players tried to emulate that. He didn’t invent dangles, but nobody did it like him, especially in the early 2000s.
Even in the era of Crosby and Ovechkin….Pavel Datsyuk was the most dangerous player on the ice in his era, he doesn’t get the praise he deserves as one of the best players to ever play the game.
As a Sharks fan, I had the good fortune of seeing Dastyuk play live 3 times. In all 3 games he made a highlight reel play. All 3 are in this video. Man did he embarass us a lot.

For all these ridiculous highlights Datsyuk has, his backchecking and presence on defense was ridiculous. The best 2-way forward in the game for so many years. McDavid, for as good as a player as he is, just doesn't have that same kind of 2-way presence...but he's also still super young so who knows what he becomes.
Man, growing up a Pens fan during those mid-late 2000s meant that Datsyuk was up there in the public enemy rankings, between the back to back cup appearances, not to mention everyone's hands were always being compared to his. So as a kid you try to reject him to pump up your team, because of course when you're young your guys are always best (to be fair, they've been pretty damn good)! But as an adult, good god what a special player, It's not just how silky, talented, every other superlative in the book he was, but how fun he must have been to watch game in and game out. He made the sport better by being part of it.
In the 2002 Stanley cup finals, Aaron ward said the guy he least wanted to face was datsyuk. One of the most loaded teams ever if not the most loaded team ever and ward was most scared of facing the 23 year old skinny rookie on the fourth line. That shows you how good he really is.

His ability to move around so well and it not affect his puck handling is what is really impressive about him. It just makes him so dangerous because he can break your ankles at a moments notice because his hands were just better than everyone else.

I went to Datsyuk matches in 2000 in Kazan, in Russia. When he went out on the ice - all the spectators understood that they saw the genius of hockey. We were glad that he gave us one year of happiness in Kazan and therefore went to Detroit
Learning that signature toe drag scored me at least 50 goals when I played in HS. The way he leans diagonally with the late drag has put even the best defenders on the ice.
He is clearly top 10 players ever to play hockey. The man was something. He had elegance, grit and he was unselfish and magical. There isn’t one player like him. That says a lot. His celebrations were very mute and he just played hockey.

I've seen over 250 games in SJ. Every home game from 05-'11. I can say without a doubt that Datsyuk is the most skillful player I've ever seen.

What makes Datsyuk unique is his style, you don't really see anyone moving their bodies or hands around the same ways he did.
