    "The Great Mirror of Male Love" is an actual book...centuries old, and remains one of the few literary windows into homosexuality in historic Japan, its complex place in that society and era, and its relative normalcy compared to European cultures that maintained 'down low bro' silence on the subject...even while the conduct itself was prevalent.

    • @shukei26
      @shukei26 Před 27 dny +3

      The Japanese have many different words for "love" as well as it's meaning. As the narrator explains the book doesn't delve into homosexuality itself but the sense of camaraderie between Japanese men. Part of the episode was how the Dutch man misinterpreted a lot of Japanese culture in general including the book that inspired him to go to Japan

    • @Samaelthekind
      @Samaelthekind Před 22 dny +1

      @@shukei26 I appreciate the narrator...but I have to admit I have a copy of the actual book...and it is explicit, even for its time period, and I'm not even sure I can reference passages here without drawing a banhammer down on this convo. Enough to say...whatever the narrator may have said, the text itself is a lengthy series of poetic examples of both romantic and sexual relationships, largely characterized by fidelity or tragedy. I recommend it as a read...but only with the advance warning that the subject matter is frequently adult, but not crude or intentionally lewd. By current standards, a lot of passages are very offensive, so I certainly invite people to give a read...but know what you are headed into first. I can say that narrator may have understated the description to be polite...or perhaps the translation on that episode was a little off, but in any case, however the term love may be misinterpreted in many historical cases...this isn't such a case. The text references infatuation, obsession, lustful desire, abiding loyalty and profound admiration and more or less every form of expression of romantic and/or sexual attraction, from the crass to the noble.

      I've been hoping Champloo wins the Blind Wave anime poll for YEARS. But I heard from Chad at Diegesis that Maple and Ariana will be checking it out soon.
      This show is a masterpiece, and ends perfectly, unlike the 500+ episodes of the more mainstream, childish, and poorly written animes. It deserves more attention.

      @@shukei26 You're correct, it was a form of edict called Sakoku, which restricted access to the country and prevented natives from leaving. Only a couple nations were allowed to do business within certain districts of Nagasaki. I knew it was something like that but I was admittedly fuzzy on the subject.
