- In this video we look at the vowel sound /ɔː/ in British English. Find out how to pronounce law, saw, more, and ought. I sometimes nickname this sound the "cute sound" or even the "sad sound" (the symbol also looks a little sad too!) to help my students remember how to pronounce it.

Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚 #englishpronunciation #englishteacher #englishlesson
Now, I am thinking with myself...that's the reason I have so much difficulty to understand spoken english, mainly this coming from native. The key to improve listening is a good pronunciation. Non-native teachers sometimes don't give the proper value to the pronunciation what ends up decreasing the English learning. Thanks God, I'm deemed a privileged for knowing a teacher like you, which explain exactly how the words are naturaly pronounced. Thank you! I am all pleased.
Ivanildo Vieira don’t worry, some native teachers don’t believe that learning the correct pronunciation from the start is vital either. It’s a shame.
You are just like fine wine Emma, getting better every year .)

Law and low, coat and caught sounds alike ,is it same pronunciation? Kindly clarify my doubt mam.
Nope. I have a video on these sounds already. Maybe check it out :)
o is easy, but the last t needs some practice. It sounds different compared with other languages.
Please maje vdeo in a que
Thought fought
law is simple . I make mistake with saw ? ought what doese it means .
Do Americans this phrase“ in terms of” ? or only use in British English...
Why law, all, fall, ... Is with ɔː and not lay, car, bath, ... It may seem obious but it is because you get used to it. From abroad how can you figure out which word containing the letter "a" will be pronunced with ɔː or not.
There are some spelling rules but, really, they’re just so inconsistent. My advice with English is to stop looking for pronunciation rules all the time and learn the words as you come across them - like natives do! You’ll find it WAY less stressful than memorising endless rules that are countlessly broken 😅
Uk or USA?
Isn't the cute sound argh ( /a:/ )?
I was watching Barcelona's match I had heard ray Hudson comment on Messi's gool he said " mariculos amazing he doesn't set the bar he is the bar" but l had heard him say the Ball 😃 pronouncuation is very important Emma and English British very difficult to catch the words 🤐
Aj Fadol uff! I know 😅 haha. But you weren’t far off with understanding “Ball” instead of “Bar”! 😄
@@Pronunciationwithemmamaybe I hit the bar Emma 😂😂

How to pronounce, weather and whether ?
czcams.com/video/sNHKzyiDe4w/video.html
Why don't we call this a real long o sound? Technically, this is a long o sound. O in joke is actually a diphtong. I'm confused.
You can call it whatever you want if it makes you sleep better, I guess.

Hi Emma,
Is there any difference between the pronounciation of saw (cutting tool), saw(past tense of see) and sew (stitching a garment)?
Best regards.
Saw (the tool) and saw (past of 'see') are the same.
Sew sounds like 'so' (as in 'go', 'no', 'low', etc).
Hope this helps :)
How old are you? 😳
The way u pronounce law .it sounds like low
Low is a different vowel sound. Check out this video. czcams.com/video/jUHuHVysCxs/video.htmlsi=NRlbOVfKmFA6_U50
So I take that ɔː is basically an elongated version of ɒ ?
