Impatient, close passing moped driver knocked us off our bike today.

- Fortunately the police (?) were right behind us, so they could scold me for not wearing a helmet and then leave. First time off my bike since 2007.
Sigrid is fine; my knee is messed up, can't ride for a bit.
This is exactly why I don't like to stop for red lights. Inattentive or impatient motorists frequently hit cyclists when the light turns green. Note also, I was in an ASL, meant to prevent exactly this kind of negligence.

Scary!! Sigrid looked like she was OK (thankfully!!) - and she also looked like she recovered really quickly when you rode on. I'd be surprised if you don't have some scrapes and bruises. I'm glad you are both OK!! ❤

So glad you and Sigrid are relatively OK and I hope you make it back on the bike soon. Totally agree with you about red lights and the only time I ever got hit was from behind in stopped traffic. I feel much safer running reds when the coast is clear than sitting still with reckless motorists directly behind, poised to sprint into me when the light turns green.
Oh my gosh I gasped in shock at the title and then gasped when I saw it happen. Unbelievable! And so frightening. I'm so sorry people are this inconsiderate. This could have been catastrophic
Such a sad shocking accident which must of shaken you both up. Sigrid look on her face is what makes me sad. I sincerely hope you both are well and that there's not too much damage to yourselves or equipment.

Travis, please please please wear a helmet. I've lost 2 family members to bicycle accidents and the only reason I didn't lose a third is because she had a helmet on when she went down. Even at low speeds, if you hit wrong it can kill you. My aunt was pulling away from a light just like this and hit the pavement, her helmet cracked. She would be dead.
Don't think it would have helped in this case, but I wear one when it's convenient, and don't when it isn't.
@@TravisandSigrid I totally get that. It wouldn’t have made a difference THIS time, but you may not always be so lucky. Just speaking from experience. Sorry if this hit me harder than usual but it should have been my cousin’s birthday this week, instead he’s dead and buried for the sole fact that we wasn’t wearing a helmet on one of his daily rides.

I don't know the traffic laws of your location, but even assuming you had the right of way, if you end up in an accident like this when you are trying to perform a turn, it is also partly your fault. Yes, you can blame the other person for the initial dangerous situation, but you ending up on the ground is also you not spotting that danger approach in time. Always be aware and careful of your surroundings in busy traffic like that

As a runner, I encounter many impatient drivers at intersections. I had a good number of close calls - even with the pedestrian light on green.

That’s how fast accidents happen, sometimes with dire consequences. There’s so much aggression in city traffic, everyone in such a hurry hurdling through the traffic lights to gain seconds risking life and limb of self and others. I could hear the shock and pain in your voice and the immediate concern for Sigi, Her Feline Majesty was confused but in full trust of you. I felt outraged, powerless and then relieved as you both continued on your way. I hope a new day will see you both fine and out on new adventures to share with us. Please stay safe for us♥️

gotta love that you get hit, and immediately people blame the victim because you weren't wearing a helmet. someone near me got killed recently on their bike at night but they didn't have bike lights on, and everyone is just like "oh well it's their fault for not having lights on so it's okay they are dead now, can't do anything about that" just smh

Well, it is their fault for not having lights on. My job requires me to drive quite a lot at night and there’s been countless bikes on the road with no lights on or any reflective gear. You only see them when you get very close. Thankfully most of the roads I drive on are 30mph and I usually stick to 25-28mph so I can stop/slow down quickly as there’s a lot of wild animals and tons of cats always running out into the road. If they were on a 50-60mph road… it would be a real tragedy.
And she is right, he should be wearing a helmet. Did it cause the moped to cause the incident? No, of course not but it would certainly protect him from brain damage if another idiot does the same thing at a faster speed.
@@Ron_Swanson he was going 3 blocks home from work, and this was right after the time change so very likely he just forgot to bring lights with him. literally killed pulling into his driveway by an 18 year. maybe we can blame him for not wearing the right clothing next.
@@shannonbriggs100 i enjoy how you make a bunch of additional assumptions and continue to blame both travis and a dead guy. sounds like you need an eye exam and better lights if you can't see people properly at night. do you constantly run into curbs because they aren't all illuminated? if you don't see how blaming someone for getting hit, which wasn't any of his fault, and telling them they need to be more careful, then you're clearly carbrained beyond saving.
Near Old Street again, should bloody have cycle lane leading up to there and all along, only a couple of weeks ago there was works there which would have slowed the moped guy down , too many of them “delivery” drivers on the road 😿

Just read about the negative crowd coming out from under the rocks after this post. I'm with you, bud. Accidents are bound to happen when one rides a bike, I've had my share. Glad Sig's ok and don't be discouraged by the bad vibes, those have their own problems they should work on.

Electric mopeds / cars need to have a sound when moving and all bicycles should have mirrors.
You were not the cause of this but you did stop a tad too far to the left if you intended to follow the road to the right. If the bicycle had mirrors you may have seen him early sneaking up to you.

How is no one pointing out that he quickly drifted to the right INTO the path of the motorcyclist? Yes the motorcyclist should have held back but this cyclist is also partly to blame. Instead he takes absolutely no accountability. Maybe take the officers advice and wear a helmet if you decide to ride without a care in the world.
It's illegal to overtake in a junction, or with less than 1.5 meters. Maybe you should obey the law before you kill someone.

You of all people should know how dumb other road users can be, and you state in your description that its a frequent occurence, yet you do nothing to avoid it.
