In Belgium, there is still a football team called after him. FC KAA Gent "the buffalo's" and there mascot and logo is an indian. The football team started when buffalo bill came to the city with his show.

It was a common name. I don't know how common an occupation it was, though I can see how it might attract morethan one William C.

This Buffalo Bill came first, he's the one Jame Gumb was named for when no one knew who he was. But yeh, it's a sensible association, especially for those of us interested in serial killers and/ or fiction.
