Firewire Rob "Machadocado" Surfboard Review Ep 146

  • In this episode, Noel Salas reviews Rob Machado's new surfboard called the "Machadocado" by Firewire Surfboards. Is it similar to the "Seaside?" Yes. However it has a squash tail, a little more surface area, and it rides as a twin plus trailer. Noel rode it at Waco Surf with his Twin plus Trailer fin set up in three sessions.
In session 1, Noel found that it carves well and has a lot of down-the-line speed with Rob's signature Twin + Trailer fin set up.
In session 2, he switches the fins and uses a smaller stabilizer. With the Pivot Twins in Prepreg Carbon, the board feels playful, you can push it hard through turns, and it fells a little more high performance compared to the "Seaside."
Finally, in session 3, Noel continued with his Pivot Twins +. Trailer in Prepreg Carbon and really started to gel with the board. Overall, the "Machadocado" pivoted faster, carried similar speed down the line and drew sharper turns compared to the "Seaside." It's a good paddler with lower rocker, which promotes a lot of down the line speed. For all the details, watch the full episode. Enjoy!

Great showcase of the broad - thanks. It's kinda like a Dark Arts 'Dad Bod' (the first one with a squash tail) - the dimensions are similar too, with the Machadocado being even wider and more volume.
I rode the Machadocado in small & lumpy, windy semi - close out surf and it kinda excelled there. It's def more of a groveler than the Mashup, but less so than the Seaside or Sweet Potato, so sizing it up a bit is less of a no-no. I like the tail and fin setup more on this than the Seaside and SP too, as it gets SUPER thin like you mentioned (thickness wise) which helps it pivot better.
With the sea of swallow and round pins on the market, it's nice to see the classic squash back in action. This board doesn't jump out at you when you look at it in store, but I'm really glad it was suggested at one of their demos cause now I 'need' one lol. If I'm not mistaken, the total sq ft of this (Rob's) 2 plus 1 equals the same sq ft of his four fin quad set - and why the trailer is a big larger than normal.
You're ripping on it too, look forward to more vids featuring it - cheers!

Ripping on the cado Noel! Picked up the 5'6" which has a few more liters than I normally ride, but like you described, with how refined the tail is, and nose ever so slightly pulled in and with just the right amount of flip, it is so much fun. Atm cannot get off this board. I'm glad I went up a size, as FW seems to have skipped the 5'5" - the 5'6" still fits well in pockety surf for quick snaps, but also is a blast in flatter slopey waves. Wraps are especially fun on the cado, just step all the way back to the deckpad kick and bring it all the way around!! Thanks Noel for the awesome review!

Honestly the first day I surfed the 5’6” cado it felt more than 32L in a good way eg paddling was so easy. Made getting into waves and paddling to keep up with currents super easy. So far took it out on small flatter waves and a few steeper cuppy days and board handles really well. Doing roundhouses/wraps are so fun with this board, I feel like it is definitely smoothing out my surfing. I’ve tried the new Maxhado twin plus trailer set up on small days and it is super fast, but for quick snaps I was sliding out a bit. I threw in my Shapers Asher Pacey uprights plus trailer and they are so solid. I’m going to try the endorfin twin plus shark tooth next to see how they feel.
I don’t regret going up to the 5 6 especially since I planned from the get go to use this board as a groveler and give my shoulders a break in between swells. Also, the next size down would have been 5 4 which for me wouldn’t grovel as well.

I've been waiting for this review to come out since I got the email from Firewire about the release of the Machadocado. Got a couple of questions for you: How would you compare this board to the Mashup? And what dimensions would you recommend me if I want to get this board for my everyday board? I am 215lbs, 5'11", mostly surfing during the weekends, SoCal beach brakes from Newport to HB. I am debating between the 5'10" x 21 5/8" x 2 11/16" x 37.6L or going up to the 6'0" x 21 5/8" x 2 3/4" x 40.1L. I just got myself a Sweet Potato 5'6" x 22" x 2 9/16" x 37.8L in the Helium Core with Volcanic Lamination that I'm enjoying as a groveler board. I look forward to your feedback!

Your volume range for your weight at different skill levels.
      Pro/Expert 34-36L
      Advanced 36-38L
      Intermediate 39-41L
If you currently like your 37L board then you can go for similar volume on the MC. The bigger size might feel a bit big in overhead waves with the extra volume.
If your a strong paddler and like your boards more sensitive go for the smaller one. Another thing to consider is the strong currents in those Beachies and foam is your friend.

Hard to compare these two boards. The D2 is not a wide nose hybrid board design like the MC. The MC is a legitimate Groveler be design with its wider outline and lower overall rocker. The D2 is more of a Small Wave Performance board or Daily Driver. Both boards are epic and make a good two board quiver.

Thoughts on this vs a pyzel white tiger? Seem similar to me, squash tail longer rail foam forward grovelers… I am a begintermediate surfer getting more comfortable on shortboards, can catch up to around head high waves reliably but don’t really rip or do major maneuvers yet, mostly go down the line and working on going more top to bottom on the face. I’m on a 5’8 hypto currently, twin plus trailer. I was thinking maybe a 5’6 MC or a 5’7 WT, mainly interested in getting looser with a squash tail vs pintail. It might be fair to say I’m not good enough yet to appreciate the differences and should just stay on the hypto. Any thoughts if either of these boards might be worthwhile for my progression?

@@jorgeandrescoppiano.5715 the Cado has less overall rocker so it’s faster and paddles better. The Cado is more of a Groveler and shreds 1-3’ surf. You can surf it in a little overhead waves but it’s best in smaller waves.
The RW is more of a small wave performance board. It does tighter arcing turns and likes to surf the pocket more vertical. Basically the RW is a step down small wave shredder. For most surfers… including myself it’s my daily HPSB. Most small wave performance boards fall into this category… they rip 3-6’ flatter faced waves that aren’t super hollow.
