There is a long history of Jews and Muslims of African descent in the Americas. One grandparent "Creole" from Cane River and the other Gullah/Geechee from Charleston on my mother's side. I have both Ashkenazi and Sephardic DNA which I guess is not surprising but the Ashkenazi showed up on my South Carolinian side! Thank you once again Professor Hunter for a thought provoking conversation. I wonder what Mr Twitty thinks of the Shalom Y'all food festival held in Savannah, GA in October.

@@slimtrain We may be related! I had to edit my above comment because I left out a whole sentence! So yes, the Cardozo's were Sephardic Jews. One of the men had children with an enslved woman of African descent. Paul Robeson descends from that family. Two of the oldest temples in the country were built in Charleston and Savannah.

I just learned today, that in the South Carolina charter it specifically offers a safe haven to Jews, heathens and dissidents.

I appreciate you Karen for introducing people to Michael Twitty. I've been familiar with him and following his work on the educating people on the enslaved Africans and the food traditions they brought with them to the Americas, but this opened me up to another level of this brother. 🙏🏿🙏🏿

As a Black Orthodox Jew, I have a great deal of respect for this man, Nissim Black (the Black Haredi rapper), and Yavilah McCoy (founder of Ayeka, a nonprofit organization providing educational resources for Jewish Diversity and advocacy for Jews of Color in the United States). They are forces in our community (those born into and who converted). In my view the best answer to the theology questions is the teachings of Rabbi Tovia Singer. This program was inspiring, informative, and enlightening. The views expressed on spirituality by host, cohost, and guest were so beneficial to my spirit that I can't express it. Thank you ever so much for having him on and hopefully he will be followed by Nissim and Yavilah.

This a very interesting brotha and I love his perspective of faith. His inclusiveness reminds me of an experience I had with my 5th grade teacher in the mid 80s. Where he had a day where each student told of their religion and brought a food our different cultures. We had an oddly diverse class for a south east Texas elementary that made it work out so well. This teacher Mr Poulson would never be able to do a class like that today without getting kicked off his job. That being said Im 45 and out of all the classes and days of instruction I have had I remember that day like yesterday. I truly made me so inclusive and open minded when it came to religion and culture.

I believe according to the Bible as black people we can be identified as being part of the Israelites only by Abraham's blessing and our faith in Jesus Christ and our faith as a born again believer actively living in God's righteousness is so much MORE important than anything else because everything here on earth will pass away and we shall stand before God one day to be judged by Him regardless of one's race, creed, and tribe!

there was no such thing as Jewish 2000 years ago. Jesus was Hebrew and an Israelite...and spent how many years studying in Egypt/Nubia...and there was no distinction made of how he looked versus those Africans. amen (Jewish, Christian or African)?

@@KarenHunterShow What are you an ignoramus or something? Black people are Africans. Jews, Hebrews, Israelites are a culture, an ethnicity. They are a race of people that black people are not.
Stop attempting to culturally appropriate other peoples cultures and identities as if they are your own. It's disgusting and it's antisemitic.
And in response to your ridiculous claim that "there was no such thing as Jewish 2000 years ago." I would suggest you read the Bible and educate yourself.
