Regarding collection of pumice stone from the beach
My understanding of the law in Queensland is that it is permitted to collect small amounts of material from public beaches (I do not remove shells though), however it is strictly prohibited to remove any material whatsoever from a National Park anywhere in Australia. It was brought to my attention while editing this video that in some jurisdictions in Australia it is strictly prohibited to remove any items from the natural environment in any location (National Park or otherwise). In retrospect, I may not have collected the pumice stone from the beach this day, however I have been visiting this island since early childhood, it is a very special place for me (that feels like home), and I have to admit I did not think about it at the time. I will be more careful about this in future. I decided it was still worth sharing the video to demonstrate how pumice stone can be used in a soap recipe.

Ours in the U S A was called LAVA SOAP which they don’t make it anymore. I love making it for my son’s there a diesel mechanic. They are so perfect for the nasty grease and oils that they come in contact with. 😊

Mention of Solvol gave me full on "Daddy memories". We always had Solvol in the laundry and my father used it routinely because he was forever fixing something, building something or inventing something. Even as a little tacker I remember using it after gardening - I planted my first garden at 7, with rhubarb and pansies. Good memories. Thanks for the wonderful visit to the Quandamooka people's Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island). It is beautiful, plus you saw whales! You can't get better than that 🏝️ 🙏🏻

Yay so beautiful. I just love how your personality comes out in each video! And you used my favourite ingredient Tallow!!! I usually let the tallow cool to 35degrees and the lye solution as cool as I can get it, so that I don't have to worry about it seizing - it has happened in the past with volcanic results - no pun intended with your use of pumice. :). I love the lather from a tallow soap too, tight and white bubbles! Sheep Tallow behaves differently, you want that to be at 60degrees or above or it re-solidifies when you add the lye - I have made many mistakes on this one too. Great video and so great to see the beach, I have been hanging out for summer! - been such a long and cold, wet winter here in the south.

I thought I'd keep them a bit warmer, I'm always scared of false tracing when I use lots of saturated fats. I hope things warm up for you soon, and you get a holiday! I’ve made it once and am getting ready to make it a second time-it works great for cleaning up after mechanic work (as my husband and sons have done) and for my part I love it for washing dirty garden hands. I followed the recipe for the most part but added finely ground walnut shell also, to make it extra exfoliating.

Living in Australia I remember the TV add ‘wash your hands Geoffrey, with the Solvol Geoffrey’….lol. Thanks for sharing this Elly. I remember Solvol and the smell and often my sister and I would use Dad’s soap and hands were always clean and felt smooth. I will be making some soon. ❤️🇦🇺

oh I miss solvol, it's the only thing that gets plant sap especially gum off your skin.
Had a quick look and apparently Solvol bars are going for 88$ a bar on ebay!
Thanks for showing how easy it is to grind your own pumice. I wondered if I could do it myself as I'm walking by pumice stones everyday on the beach but it is a relatively expensive ingredient to buy.
I actually found a few bars of solvol in the laundry cupboard recently so I can easily compare the result 😊
Just make sure it's legal and appropriate to collect the stones from the beach in your area Kate. Would be good to compare recipes for sure!
I wanna thank you for sharing this recipe. Here in Portugal we don’t see those stones frequentou with that dizer, but we can find negar the ocean bits of some. In Portugal the sand is very fine and i think i am going to use or sand from a Beavers that is very fine or Saibro, that is similar to sand but it is orange and used to make bricks to do fireplaces, etc.

Content suggestion Elly: a video on clean-up after the soap creation. What do you use to clean all the dishes and pans that have lye solution, unsaponified raw soap, EOs, oils, etc. Is it simply toss it all in the dishwasher and go?
Some of us don't have redundant sets of pots and dishes to be only used for soaping. MY suggestion for a future video.

Hi Elly! They sell similar soap here for mechanics, with pumice, but the soap itself is just murder on your skin. This looks much more pleasant. :) Great video as always!

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Yes, US. Was a mechanic in my youth and we used a (fairly new at the time) product called Fast Orange hand cleaner. It is still sold today, though hopefully with a milder formula. I'd post up a link but I don't want to anger the google gods. Had a wonderful citrus smell, and did a fantastic job, but at the end of the day one's skin would feel very dry. Uncomfortably so if left untreated.
Oh dear, yes that sounds a bit rough. This would be a milder alternative I'm sure.
In the U.S. with have Lava Soap pumice soap. It's been around forever. You can get it online.

Hi Sue, they are just little jars I found somewhere. I can't even remember where they came from now! Certainly weren't new. Perhaps a charity shop? Little repurposed jars would be perfect.

Hey Elly! Would the work for melt and pour soaps as well? I have done something similar with them before but I kept running into the problem of where my pumice would just sink to the bottom. This was fine for the first few washes, but after that there was no more pumice. 😅 Any suggestions?
Did a quick search, and it sounds like Solvol is like Lava Soap that we had here in the states.
Yes a few people have said that. It sounds like Lava soap is quite rough though, Solvol was quite smooth.

In the states we had Lava soap for heavy duty hand washing. They still make it but its not the same

Thanks! You can make it in a big log if you like, just don't use your favourite knife! The pumice will damage it for sure.

I'm not sure Jen, I've never used walnut hulls. I like the sound of it though, as long as you can get them fine so they're not scratchy!

hi, very interesting and informative episode. It got me thinking about possibly using coral that washes up when dead. What do you think? its probably a bit more scratchy than the pumice but i dont know it seems interesting. What do you think?
Hi Malika, it's illegal to remove coral (even dead) from the beaches here, so I'd check what's allowed and/or environmentally responsible in your area before you considered it. I'd probably sooner use some other natural ingredient (things like nut husks, or ground tree bark) before I took coral from a beach. Have a think of what else you could use. Even more finely ground poppy seeds would be good!

Hey Elly , I've a question for you. I just made some coconut soap with nano silver as the water and added 28g of dried citrus peel. I peeked at it mid jell and quickly covered it up and now two days later just took it out of the mold and there's a channel of un cured something along the center bottom of the loaf. I"m thinking it was just too much peel and it didn't get incorporated all the way. I'm curious if you have any experience with this that you would share. I love you channel!

I’ve used that before without getting that reaction. I’m thinking it was just too much of the citrus peel.
Where did you get your loaf mold ? That's a nice size bar of soap. I can't find that mold on amazon.

Hello! I love your recipe and the fact that you always try to use interesting ingredients. Lately I came across some Mastic berry Oil ( pistacia lentiscus), and I wanted to make some soap with it. The only problem I can't find the saponification value of such oil. Do you know where I can find it or if you know the number can you tell me, please? Thank you

Can you use beer with this soap instead of water and how would citric acid react with that?

Did you find your home rendered tallow stinks? I rendered some sheep tallow and it’s a bit smelly still, do you think that will leave in saponification?
Hi Kasie, I used the wet rendering method (there's a link to it in the description box) and my tallow came out quite odorless. Depending on any fragrance you used, it might cover the smell, but often some will remain. Really depends on rendering method.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking yes I used the wet method too, I did find a video that suggests repeated wet rendering with salt to purify, but it’s all with beef tallow, maybe lamb tallow is different 🤷🏼♀️
I think it probably is. You could ask Delizia from Delizia Naturally (also here in Aus) She uses sheep fat and says it's quite different to work with! She might have some tips.

How do you keep your soap from cracking? It seems my soap gets too hot as it gells cracking the top? This is a pretty, clean looking soap!
Thank you, perhaps you are starting with your ingredients too warm? Adding sugars and some oils will get very hot too (like lots of coconut oil).
Can you use sand instead?
