Please do a partial trial of the weed block fabric before putting everwhere. I used it in my front yard and covered it with compost to make it look better. It did help block weeds. The weeds that did grow didn’t root deeply so were much easier to pull. After a few years I pulled it up and to me the soil looked dead. I see that some are made of vegetable material but others contain polypropylene, polyester, and recycled materials. If those plastics breakdown in your soil you will never get those microplastics back out. I don’t know if your food would absorb them through the roots. It is something to consider.
Thank you sincerely for sharing your experience. ❤️ Our plan is take up the weed fabric at the beginning of each winter in order to amend the soil. We'll be adding compost, manure, food scraps, etc to the garden each year to build the soil, then re-lay the weed fabric come spring. I think that takes care of the soil issue, but the microplastics is certainly something to consider. Thanks again!
A home gardener, can't buy GMO seeds. I heard a rant by someone in the plant industry go off on seed companies that push "they sale only non-gmo seeds" He said normally they charge a premium price for their "non-gmo" seeds when in reality no company that sales to home gardeners sale them gmo seeds. Gmo seeds are super expensive and they are tightly regulated for commercial farmers only. If you went the store and all the seeds were between 2 & 3 dollars and you see a pack that's 20 dollars would you buy the 20 dollar pack? Even if gmo seeds weren't regulated seed salers would not sale them to home gardeners because it's not profitable.

Yep that's what I heard as well.
That's not true anymore. Unfortunately. There is now a purple GMO tomato seed being sold to home gardeners. More GMO seeds will certainly follow.
@@CryBabysSentimentalHomestead yeah, I saw that the other day. Those tomatoes looked unnatural! 😝 I can't imagine anyone wanting to eat them and certainly not preserve them. Weirdest looking tomatoes.
I grew Sungold cherry tomatos last year and will always grow them from now on. They are super sweet and super prolific. I also like Sweet Million for a red cherry.

I am trying new tomatoes this year as well. I heard brandy boy from MG as well. I'll have to try that next year. I heard about sungold a lot from others. I'll have to add that to the list this year.
Sungolds are indeed very tasty and very productive, BUT be aware that they are also very prone to splitting. If you have a dry period followed by a heavy rain, the tomatoes are almost certain to split. The good news is that they usually produce so many fruits so quickly that losing some to splitting isn't a very big deal. (They also do work well for sauces when blended up.) For paste, I like the Pomodoro Squisito hybrid but am trying a couple of heirlooms in addition to that one this year. And when it comes to attracting pollinators, one of the best things I've ever found is borage. Those plants do get very large, and they self-seed like crazy (buy one packet of seeds and you're probably set for life), but the bees love them!
I second this….im trying a hybrid called golden nugget this year to see if it splits less but tastes the same…
Thank you for the tip & warning! I definitely deal with splitting. I was thinking of adding borage this year. The only thing holding me back is that I've heard they can be TOO good at attracting pollinators, including wasps. I already have a large wasp population, and it's made me a little iffy on planting borage. Still on the fence!

I don’t think seeds for garden use are GMO. I could be mistaken on this but I think it is just farmers. You are safe. Paul Robeson is my favorite tomato. I do tons of pruning though to prevent blight. The San marzano def got blight for me so I went to Amish paste for sauce tomatoes. My winner cherry tomato is black cherry. The sungold is good too but the black cherry can’t be beaten and are extremely prolific
I've never heard of the Paul Robeson tomato. I'll have to check it out. I grew Amish paste last year and wasn't too impressed. It may have been my weather conditions, but they took so long to ripen. I ended up canning a lot of green tomato salsa verde from them.
Oooh, black cherry. I haven't grown that one! I might just have to sneak it in somewhere....
The San Marzano is low on acid. So it's great for those who suffer from acid reflux like myself 😅
GMO seeds are for commercial growers only. You have to sign a contract to grow them.
Please try black opal I feel it could beat black cherry for taste😊
I got free Merlot as well. I planted it with any other varieties. We loved it.
Heirloom tomatoes where once F1 hybrid tomatoes. It what's naturally happens in Nature when different tomatoes, get pollinated from bees, butterflies etc. They are just not stable yet like an heirloom is.
GMO is never sold to home gardeners. So you never have to worry about it. We grow both hybrid and heirloom tomatoes. We never had good luck with San Marzano tomatoes. We grow Grandero and Plum Regal with better luck.

@@foodprepguide yes both are Roma variety. We have tried different Roma varieties each year and those two have been the best. I keep track (number and weight) of each type tomato (only do this for tomatoes) so I don’t rely on memory. I know Johnney’s has both those varieties. I also get seeds from Totally Tomatoes catalog.

Parsley n cilantro grow very well in winter
You don't have to worry about GMO seeds for the garden. No seed company sells them for the home garden. Hybrid plants aren't bad and lightning won't strike if you plant them in your heirloom garden. 😍 The seeds from them will grow but they won't give you the same result as the original hybrid. I found that if I want the absolute best kohlrabi that doesn't get woody and stays sweet and crispy it would be a hybrid. The one that is totally reliable for me is Konan kohlrabi. Amazing variety!

I was buying more seeds today when your videoposted. Parsley is a bi-annual. I love seeds as much as you. I'm in grow zone 5 so my list is I little different..happy growing.

I won't fill you up with seed recommendations, but one pepper variety that I will always grow is the 'Jimmy Nardello'. It's a longer, thin walled pepper, but the taste is amazing. It's prolific and quite sweet, and even sweeter if roasted for a couple of minutes on the grill. It does have a few seeds, but nothing like the Corbacci pepper. I'll never grow the Corbacci again. It's full of seeds and tasteless compared to the Jimmy Nardello.
Everyone who has taken my recommendation and grew the Jimmy Nardello have stated they would always include it in their garden. I love seeds and seed varieties as much as you, and I can honestly say the Jimmy Nardello is a winner.
The only word of caution is to keep a close look over your peppers as they're maturing because there is a small worm that will eat a pin hole near the top of some peppers. The pepper will continue to grow, and you won't know a worm is inside until you pick that beautiful 8" - 10" pepper.

Sun Gold is my absolute favorite tomato of all time! The only issue I have woth thrmnis that they crack easily. But the excellent taste makes it worth it. It will ALWAYS have a place in my garden!

Try honeycomb f1 it is slightly sweeter and is less prone to cracking! Also Sugargloss😊
I really enjoyed watching your seed haul video for 2024. By the way, parsley is a biennial. So this year, if it is your second year, your parsley should produce the flowers and the seed. There are certain butterflies who are attracted to the second year parsley. It is dreary, cold and rainy here in NE Texas and so nice to take a few moments from work to fuel my Seed Acquisition Disorder.😁

It has snowed continuously for the last 24 hours so, I have not been in any of my outside gardens today; however, as of yesterday, my lime thyme still had some green growth on it. On basil, I am a tea drinker and Lime Basil is my absolute favorite must have basil every year! Love the gray poppies and white zinnias. We're growing those this year as well. I always have Bright Lights (orange) Cosmos in the gardens. Last year we grew Tithonia which was a great hit for bees, butterflies and humming birds. It grew almost as tall as our ranch style house. The last flower to produce so many blooms. We also grew Safflower to flavor chicken dishes and sides. They were the first to start producing and acted as determinate plants, one prolific explosion of orange puffs and then all together gone leaving room for Tithonia. Shared on social media. Great informative well-organized video.

Corbaci peppers are fantastic for munching and the beauty they add to the garden is so worthwhile. You may want to also try Jimmy Nardello. They are over the top delicious, long and red. Our absolute favorite sweet pepper.

I'm growing 12 diff tomatoes 12 cherry 1 Squash: Nectar Hybrid, Isis Candy, Matts Wild Cherry, Green Doctors, Gobstopper, Super Sweet 1 Million, Fantastico, Candyland Red, Sungold, Orange Roussollini, Honeycomb, White Currant & Mash Potato Squash. I hear the Sungold is the sweetest cherry tomato with a Brix rating of 9 and above. All of the above cherry tomatoes are supposed to be super sweet.

I am trying the Fortex this year along side our favorite Blue Lake Pole bean; string-less, productive, can well. I succession plant every 3 weeks X 3 times and end up with 24-26 quarts plus fresh eating. We are in zone 7a E TN. Peppers are so slow here too. I am seed starting them under LED lights in the basement this week. I hope for a longer harvest season this year. We had great yields from the Strawberry Orange Tomato 2023 in our sauce garden. Sun Gold is the best cherry tomato; it is the first to start producing and the last to stop producing. Another great slicer as Cherokee Purple is one of our two favorites and always in our garden, the other is Thornburn's Terra-Cotta. I waited 2 years to purchase those seeds because of the cost. I tell you, the entire family agreed that the Terra-Cotta was totally worth the cost. The plants produced well over a long season. So, Cherokee Purple and Thornburn's Terra-Cotta and Sun Gold tomatoes will always be in our gardens! I agree, Rocky Top is the best lettuce mix. We've tried many from various seed companies. Nothing beats Rocky Top. You have me sold on Lovage. I'm going to try it this year. I have been unsuccessful at growing celery also. Lovage, Yay! Thank you!

Love your video... and I am going to order a few of your recommendations this year... You are right about Hybrids. They are not GMO.. They are just a cross between two heirlooms. Now let me make a recommendation for you... For sauces, you might want to try a prolific Oxheart variety of tomato... as you said about the beefsteak because of the volume you get... Oxheart tomatoes will give you so much sauce that you won't believe it. PLUS they are great for all applications.. Fantastic on a sandwich, in a salad and definitely in sauces because of the large amount of flesh and low volume of seeds and gel.. You are doing such an amazing job explaining all of your garden choices... So young and so wise. Thank you for sharing..

This year I’m adding evergreen towers basil to my herb bunch. I’ve heard amazing things about being able to harvest it all season long without it bolting. It’s a more expensive seed but worth a try

I will grow sweet 100 cherry tomatoes forever. I only grow two hybrid plants in my garden, sweet 100s and gypsy peppers. For both the yield and disease resistance is unmatched. Gypsy is a good bell pepper substitute for the hot South. Sweet 100 has a perfect complex flavor that has been lost in a lot of newer tomatoes bred just for sweetness. I've grown both varieties for at least 35 years.
I grow lovage. You have to go EASY on it or it will overpower the meal. It's much stronger than celery. It's not for fresh eating.
Lovage is a perennial too.
Parsley is also a short lived perennial in the south.
I used to grow Amana orange large tomato as my favorite large (heirloom) tomato. Great taste, fleshy with few seeds. Then I tried Dr. Wyche's (also an heirloom). Usually beefsteaks struggle in the deep south but it gave me tomatoes until January. No disease, prolific, meaty, great flavor. We were amazed by it.

Sun gold is my FAVORITE!! I am in zone 8b soon to be 9a and the sun gold produces till I pull it in Aug.

Sweet Million works very good for me. I have to plant all my tomatoes in my greenhouse because we live at 4,300 feet in the mountains.

They can't legally sell you GMO. No one is in danger of buy GMO unless they are a big farm that have a contract with monsanto. Also paste tomatoes are high producing for making any kind of tomato product. I had the biggest tomato harvest out of the Amish paste tomatoes. They were ready sooner. I also do starts inside earlier. Good luck Also I found a purple cherry tomato that is the best. I had to add. I companion planted with herbs & flowers. It helped keep the bugs out.

@@foodprepguide Oh no Sorry to hear that. The Amish paste and the Federle Tomato from MIgardender worked out great for me. My Amish paste were huge for me 2023. Maybe try Roma's? They didn't do to bad for me last year. Not as well as the other two. I just ran out to my seed storage to find out the name of that cherry tomato. It's the Black cherry tomato. They say black cherry. But they are purple. I believe MIGardener carry's them also. Soooo Good. Maybe try a multi purpose tomato? Wishing you the best of luck 🥰
GMO seeds can only be sold to commercial producers, not to gardeners. None of the garden seeds you buy will be GMO.

@@foodprepguide I used to live in South East Texas. The tomatoes that did the best for me in the hot, humid conditions were Homestead, Floridade, Rio Grande, and Bella Rosa. I hasn't tried the 42 Day, but I've heard they do good as they are ready before the horrid heat sets in. Good luck! 🙂

Be sure to read up on cold stratification of Bells of Ireland. I have tried a number of times with no luck.

Black Cherry is def worth it!!! My customers at the market love it too. I mostly sold jam and freeze dried candy last year but always snuck in any extra veggies that I had!!

I have successfully grown bells of Ireland with the winter sowing method started in February here in SE Michigan zone 6 in milk cartons
All seeds offered for home and small operation sowing are non GMO. Some companies are indicating non GMO on their packaging due to constant inquiries from their confused customers. GMO seeds are available in bulk only for large scale, commercial operations and require a contractual agreement to grow them. The seeds you order from your favourite seed companies and seed catalogues are ALL non GMO whether it says so on the package or not.
I’m in Memphis, zone 7. Try Big Bertha bell peppers 🫑 excellent production first time growing and i did buy it, only one plant got around 20. Roma bush beans are the best! No strings even on the big ones and very productive. You just need space. Ambrosia Cantelope very productive, juicy and sweet, in rich soil even in large pots. Purple hulls grow spring to fall excellent production in most soils and handles heat and drought. Danvers and red carrots did best. Dug out clay and put compost, perlite and peat with native soil or pots, all dirt screened. These were my best 2023 and filled my freezer. I’m not growing squash anymore! 😆 Luffa brings the 🐝 like nothing else. Shredded and froze some. Going to see if it tastes like zucchini. If so, it will substitute. Great video and info! 😃

I have to say the tomato guy I follow is Gardening with James Prigioni his tomatoes are amazing and he can tell you all the flavors and how they grow, on top of that his gardens are amazing and he does some of everything. So if your looking for tomoto advice I would check him out. I was also surprised that you didn't have any MiGardener seeds his seeds are great, and mostly organic, only $2 a package and if you spend $20 your shipping is free. If find a youtuber that uses them they have codes for a additional 10% off. I order Bakers Creek as well. But wasn't familar with your other companies, but wrote everything down to check out as some I have never heard of. Hybrid. Is kind of like a crossbreed. Example…a poodle + cocker spaniel = Cockapoo.
If you want another good tomato to try ,,red deuce ,and Carolina gold ,,,these two are the best tasting tomatoes other than the reverend morrows late keepers

@@foodprepguide Carolina gold is determinate and very early and the taste is amazingly captivating and unique and it’s an orange tomato,,,red deuce is the choice of many of the countries leading producers of red tomatoes,,,the veggie boys ,,n broyans farm ,,it is determinate and early and can be used for many different purposes,,late keepers are a 200 year old heirloom and the very best tasting tomatoes of all times , they don’t ripen the same way as other red tomatoes,,they look like a peach when ready to harvest and have a glow to them ,,,I ate my last ones in mid January,,,they keep longer than any other variety and still taste wonderful

Only licensed farmers have access to "gmo" seed. No seeds that you buy are gmo. "Non gmo" on a seed package is just a gimmick to make you buy them. A hybrid seed is just a certain vegetable bred for specific qualities (disease resistance etc.).

I can't get celery to grow. :( I've tried and tried to no avail. I know I could buy it, but I don't want to LOL
Hybrid means that they were cross pollinated in order to create a more superior plant to both be disease resistant ,more tolerant to drought and have a more superior flavor
Cross pollinating has been happening for a very long time ,thousands etc. of years by farmers

genetically modified (gmo) seeds are only commercially grown wheat, corn and soy beans. They are owned by mosanto/bayer (biotech) company. They are genetically modified to survive herbicide and pesticide chemicals made by monsanto/bayer. You must be a commercial farmer and sign a licensing agreement with the company to grow their seed. When a seed packet says "non-gmo" it's a marketing strategy...more people buy the product. Similar to a banana with a "gluten-free" sticker. It's a marketing thing

Nice video but I have a question. Why pretend to be an expert if you're not? I don't need you to explain what a hybrid tomato is if you don't actually know. It's lovely just to hear what your family prefers to eat. You're enough just as you are.
I didn’t intend to come across as an expert. If I recall, I asked for those who were familiar with hybrid seeds to please give me an education in the comments section.
(And many of you have, which I’m so thankful for!)
I took some time to discuss hybrid seeds (and my admitted limited understanding of them) to provide some context for why I was switching from heirloom to hybrid for tomatoes.
For years, I didn’t realize that heirlooms can’t quite withstand the pest & drought pressures like hybrids can. There may be others watching this video who also didn’t know that. If a grower’s goal is to produce enough to can all of their family’s tomato products, they, too, may want to consider the switch to hybrid for tomatoes. 🙂
And I hope everyone takes the time to scroll through the Comments section as there have been so many helpful tips and explanation as to why hybrids are and how they work.

Hybrid does not even mean "slicing" two varieties together... which makes it sound like you think there is some weird scientific experiment going on to make the hybrid... It is literally taking pollen from one variety and using it to pollinate a different variety. If you grow on an F1 hybrid (first cross) you can absolutely plant the seeds, but they won't be "stable" because of the way genetics work... you may get some that look like either of the parent varieties or a mishmash of traits, but not likely the original hybrid seeds that you purchased.
The way you are speaking makes it seem like you think there is some scientific voodoo going on... which I why I commented. It literally is standard plant breeding. You can even make new hybrids by crossing two heirlooms, then pick your favorite plants, grow them out over again and again to re-stabilize the genetics and you will create a new variety... this is how new open-pollinated varieties are created. I like to point out Brad Gates who has produced some cool open-pollinated tomatoes... the very first cross to try to produce something new would have been a hybrid. Hybrids in this context are always the same species,. There is no crossing outside of species like a tomato to an apple (Ok... there are some examples where two different species will cross but that is an outlier to my point about hybrids being natural, for example, some of the brassicas will cross, but they are so close genetically that they cross naturally with no genetic engineering).
GMOs are not available to home gardeners. Seed companies put "non gmo" on their marketing material, not because they COULD supply you with GMOs, but because people keep asking about GMOs as they are not educated in how GMOs work... usually to grow a GMO means bulk purchases that no home gardener can afford, we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars, and signing a contract with the Ag company that produced the seed. Home gardeners need to stop freaking out about GMOs. It is just not a problem.
Thanks for sharing. For chats like these "seed chats," they're not scripted. I'm not spending 10 minutes thinking about what word to use - we're just chatting. "Slicing" was certainly not the right word to use, but that's what came out lol.
