    First and foremost Congratulations To the Crusaders and their rugby cultural environment, massive respect. Secondly, as a Kiwi l say we also give massive respect to the Lions for being grand finalist two seasons in a row, a team well known for wooden spooners in the past. Rugby in the southern hemisphere is pure awesomeness.

      All the flavours in the world, and you choose to be salty.
      In the same way that you guys are complaining that the Lions were lucky that they hardly played any kiwi teams, it can be said, just as vehemently, that the kiwi teams were lucky they didn't play the Lions.
      They beat the Crusaders and the Highlanders in the quarter and semi finals last year respectively and did spectacularly well against the Hurricanes in the semi-final this year. They are without doubt the most improved team in the competition.
      Honestly, I agree with you that the schedule should have been different. They definitely should have played more kiwi teams, but don't tell them they don't have the right to be in the final they very clearly worked hard to get to.

    As a neutral brit, I realise that under the current laws it is a red card, but it does tend to ruin a game of rugby, I was really looking forward to the final but it was over as a contest from that moment on. Maybe for something that was probably unintentional we have a different sanction ,say 20 minutes for example and maybe longer bans after the match and bigger fines to make players more account able, without ruining big matches, just an idea. Obviously for deliberate violence a straight red is applicable. I don't support either team by the way. Just a rugby fan.

    Well done Crusaders for winning your eighth title! Would've been an extremely bad look for SANZAAR if the Lions had won the title given they were effectively handed first place on a plate by not having faced a single NZ side during the regular season.
    The conference formats are an absolute joke and have ruined a once great competition. We seriously need to hit the reset button, go back to a proper round robin format, get everyone playing each other at least once before the playoffs, then decide the playoffs by the overall table. The conferences and the insistence that conference winners gain home advantage have seen the quality of the competition nose dive and I believe forcing teams to make the playoffs on merit again after having faced each other during the regular season is the only way to resurrect this mess we are in. Continuing to use conferences in the future will only further diminish the quality of the competition and I don't want that to happen to Super Rugby.

    • @Karma-qt4ji
      @Karma-qt4ji Před 6 lety

      Yes the conference system is a joke, but that is not the Lions fault. By that reasoning, you might say that the 'Canes didn't deserve to be in the semis because all of their home games were against weaker sides (except Chiefs and Saders and they lost both of those). Or better yet, go back to the last time the 'Saders won and say they didn't deserve the title because they did not have a single five week tour on the other side of the world as the SA sides had.
      Nope, this is professional rugby and you have to play what's in front of you. Simple as that.

    • @longblackshadow9672
      @longblackshadow9672 Před 6 lety

      The Canes did not lose their home match against the Saders. Their victory (as it turned out) meant the Saders had to play the final in South Africa.
      Hopefully any future format will offer a greater appearance of fairness that the current asymmetrical system.
      This thread contains a lot of debate about the fairness or otherwise of the red card in the final because an even contest is what everyone wants. That applies to the competition as a whole as well.

    • @Karma-qt4ji
      @Karma-qt4ji Před 6 lety

      I agree. A fair contest for all concerned. The conference system was a stupid idea from the outset.

    • @noelburland7169
      @noelburland7169 Před 6 lety +1

      longblack shadow, SANZAAR are looking at using a 15 team conference format for next year. The Jaguares will join the South African conference to make it five teams. The Sunwolves are supposed to join the Australian conference when the ARU are finally able to jettison a side, making that five teams too. The New Zealand conference remains unchanged with their five sides.
      SANZAAR have been making decisions solely based on making money in the last six years and we've seen how badly that has affected the quality of the competition. Expansion has seen too many weak teams added and the use of conferences and the rigging of the playoffs to ensure a team from each conference appears in the playoffs has affected Super Rugby badly.
      I think the Sunwolves should be cut from the competition also. Japan has given nothing to Super Rugby and aren't part of SANZAAR. They were added because of the money Japan has, not to grow the game there like SANZAAR have claimed.
      Bring Super Rugby back to a maximum of 14 teams and drop the conference formats. Allow the round robin format to be reintroduced so everyone plays everyone else at least once and rank the teams for the playoffs by the overall table. They can make Super Rugby great again if they do this but we can all see that they won't have the courage to do it and they'll keep foisting the ridiculous conference formats on us because money means more to them than providing a competition that's fair and easy for everyone to understand.

    • @Karma-qt4ji
      @Karma-qt4ji Před 6 lety

      In the past, the SA teams were forced to complete their Aus and NZ tour in one stint and sometimes even having to cross the Tasman more than once. In other words Aus, Aus, NZ, Aus, NZ in 5 consecutive weeks (for example). The NZ and Aus teams on the other hand, toured one country, went home and then toured the other country a few weeks later. All this changed when the Brumbies were forced to tour SA for 3 weeks and then on to NZ for one. It completely ruined their season and the conference system was introduced not long after on the pretext of giving the Aussies a much sought after local competition.
      I am all for a complete round robin again, especially if we can lose some of the 'passengers', but as long as it is fair.

    The red card is unobjectionable even if Smith did not intend to hit his feet he should have anticipated an opponent jumping to contest the ball. Nevertheless, he ran recklessly towards him, making himself unable to prevent the clash, and that's his fault and the red is fair. Sadly, after that the game was ruined. Their were 5 other teams that were far more deserving to be in the final with the Crusaders. The Lions were hopeless. In their own back yard in stratified air a million miles above sea level, against a team that had to travel from the other side of the Milky Way and played a championship final within 5 days of landing against the supposed top side of the competition which was by way of virtue of not having to play any NZ team until way after the round robin stages.
    I hear a lot of excuses, but the fact is the Lions were beaten regardless how much the odds were stacked in their favour. History books wont lie like dumb biased fans.

    deserved the red but after watching how the red card ruined the B.I Lions vs the All blacks second test and eventually the series I think the application of the red card should be changed. IMO red card should be an automatic suspension on the players upcoming games and it should be 20 minutes with 14 men then back to 15 players after this with the player committing the red card offence not allowed back on the field for the remainder of the game. Punish the player not the team. It virtually impossible to win a game these days down a man for a whole game.

      westsideAUKILANI the rules state red. If the player isn't looking at the ball, and not even attempting to go after the ball then it's a red if he hits the player and lands in a dangerous way. That's the facts . Most of the crusaders tries were with playing against 15 men anyway. But I admire the lions spirit. They played extremely well in the last 15 minutes but unfortunately we're dominated the rest of the time. Still an amazing final and lions deserved to be there.

      bro just because it wasn't intentional that doesn't mean it droppes to a yellow sorry that's not how it works. It was a 100% red. It wasn't on purpose but it could of been avoided. No matter what it was a red

    I feel so bad for Kwagga.. Of all the young flankers around he is one of my favorites. I just watched the action again and Havili seems to leave his eyes of the ball and to brace for contact in the air, proof that he was going for the man rather than the ball knowing he will provoke a penalty. Nothing illegal here (what else should he do?), but it makes the red card decision all the more harsh.
    High balls are the most dangerous aspect of the game right now. Something must be done to fix this issue. Jumping to catch the ball is dangerous for the player AND the opponent

    Red card all day long, it is 2017 and this is how the game is being refereed and these are the laws to which we are all playing to. In the old days it would have been a hard collision and play on but nowadays things have changed and you have to protect the player in the air and Kwagga Smith did not do so therefore he had to go. So pleased that justice was dispensed from a very biased referree.

    Lions was def the stronger side here. Crusaders got lucky with that red card. unfortunately for Kwagga he was in the wrong place at wrong time, we can clearly see it was not intentional - no doubt if his head was not whip lashed like that, he'd have been able to attempt to bring the kiwi player down safely, but he was knocked down cold himself, rules of the game - just a shame that the game was decided then and there.

  • @casshendry7162

    That shouldn't have been a red card it should have been yellow or even just a penalty to be fair ? How could Smith bail out of that collision in time ? He's lucky he didn't get badly hurt pre-impact either. Thank goodness neither of them got hurt. In my day man those type of collisions weren't even considered a penalty you just got up and carried on playing. Great game by both teams. I don't believe Smith was at fault at all and he shouldn't have been sent off. I am a Crusaders fan and great that they secured the victory but it was a wee bit hollow given Smith was sent off. Could have been a Lions victory if Smith hadn't been sent off possibly ? Another great game / rugby season by both teams too. Great refereeing again by Jaco and the team too. Cheers.

      @rugbyfan8102 Před 6 lety

      AS aplayer its your dam responsibility To not get in the positon where you come into contact with a player in the air . He was never in a posistion to catch the ball as the red pointed out to him. Running full tilt to get there dosent put you in a posistion to make the catch but it dose put you in place where you are responsible for the jumper & must give way Like in a car on the round about . You cant pick and chose which rules to follow its not pre school

      Yeah played rugby all my life. You are wrong. Havili jumping into the air at the last second couldn't be anticipated by Smith. He Smith was in just as much danger pre-impact. How could Smith bail out of being clobbered by Havili. Insufficient reaction time to bail out. Thats why Smith put his arm up to protect his face, head from being smashed.

    Finals should be played best out of 3. I.e. If each team wins a half (a half is 40 min), it is 1-1, then a third half is played... Perhaps over 20 or 30 minutes... If a team wins 1st and 2nd halves, no need for a third.

      Nothing like SBW's red, mate. That was a red card 10 years ago (ask Butch James if you don't believe me) but a collision like the one on Saturday would have been a penalty or at most a yellow card only a year or two ago. The red card on Saturday was the correct call under the current laws, but then the current laws are at fault. I am in no way defending the Lions player but we have now got to the stage where all a defender has to do is run forward and jump. That is not a contest and we pay to see a contest. If they cannot let players compete in the air then they must prevent players from jumping.

It was literally right in front of him, it's not his fault the other player jumped for the ball and he didn't, should've been a yellow at most tbh, honestly what was he supposed to do. Rugby is just turning into a pussies game with all these rules now players are already milking every time for a penalty, soon it'll be exactly like football.
