    Great video. In the books, Doran Martell is what keeps the Martells alive. It's repeatedly mentioned that Oberyn is the dangerous, unpredictable snake whereas Doran is the tactful, calculating mastermind behind all of Sunspear's long-term motives. In the show, they don't capitalize on Doran's mastermind intellect at all and instead show him as a pathetic, weak leader who is easily ousted by Ellaria. The Martells have an equalizer in Doran, and he makes an incredibly deadly combination with Oberyn. They both had a masterplan to get revenge on the Lannisters by forming an alliance with the Targareyns through Quentyn Martelll and later Arianne Martell, neither of whom made it to the show. It's really sad that such a great show did such a big disservice to a great house. In the books, the Martells are my favorite house exactly because of all the reasons mentioned in this video -- they believe in equality, fairness, and tend to enjoy all of life's pleasures. They demonstrate how well such a society can function and are examples of excellent leaders. In the show, however, I could barely get myself to keep watching the Dorne plot because of how bad the writing for the Sand Snakes' dialogue was and how little screentime was devoted to worldbuilding in Dorne.

    • @cassandramcbride7007
      @cassandramcbride7007 Před 5 lety +41

      Im not "angry" that quentyn or Arianne didnt make it in show, after all their plots are big and lead to other plots. But at least they should had kept Ellaria, Doran, sand snakes more close to the book characters, and why not replace Arianne plot by Tristan after all, he was in love with Myrcella, could be easily used.
      Doran is turn in some useless prince, that for some reason is afraid, Tristan is just there, Ellaria that started well, end up been some homicidal revengeful bitch, and sand snakes... well just one dimension.
      Martells were done, after oberyn death and only come to life, because of Indira, otherwise, they would not brought in the show again (i guess the writers dont like their story)
      Sometimes the writers focus in some other characters or moments that are not interesting and cut in important ones. If they didnt wanted to use possible martell/targaryan heir plot, they should had use at least Arianne, by using Tristan and Myrcella attempt to take the throne, with Doran guide. Without Arianne, it would give Tristan a meaning in the show. Myrcella and Tristan, could had die in sept explosian, making Doran allied with Olenna, and sending sand snakes into the war. It would not break Ellaria character, and Doran would be seen tactical and practical. Later they could hold golden company (if they come to westeros) till Dany and jon march into Kingsland, after destroying the undead army.

      What is worse, I see even show Doran as having some long game plan. But then that angry bitch ruins it all because selfish impulse and her image of men being weak keep her from assuming that he might even *have* one.
      Which frustratingly reduces the entire thing to, at best, a warning about going from actual equality to feminism gone wrong.

      @vondonstrut218 Před 4 lety +8

      @@awaywiththefaeries9464 it just seems like the opposite of the values of the house. Isn't their first value equality??? But she only values able-bodied physically powerful people? So sloppy lol. It was clear they were hyper emphasizing that he is in a wheelchair which I found comical. If she was a true Martell, this shouldn't matter. it just feels too convenient to me. Doran seems kind, but also tactical and intelligent. I also don't exactly understand why his guards turned on him. No setup for that. That one main dude seemed like Doran's ride or day since day 1. Honestly that whole storyline makes me annoyed. The truth is D&D needed to wrap the story up so .. they just did. Season 5 was such a joke honestly lol.

      @Brandonhayhew Před 6 lety +2

      If Arianna martell marry young griff, maybe a mistake or atleast might worth something, but they want Dany and her dragons that has a real firepower, if they don't support young griff then they support Dany and at their endgame, they will get some reward and revenge but with the death of Doran's son, they won't have gain any political power or favour.

      The writers made right by cutting Arianne and Quentyn plots. But they should use Tristan Marriage with Myrcella to try to steal the throne, after joffrey death. Bringing Myrcella into the game, played by Doran. When Margary, loras and Cersei been in prison, Myrcella (guide by Doran) would try to face Tommen and High Sparrow, but end up dying in Sept explosion with Tristan. Forcing Doran allied with Olenna. Ellaria could try to stop all revenge idea. Sand Snakes could go to war, and Nymeria and Obara die in the same way. Cersei blaming Martells by Myrcella death, killing tyene in dungeon. Ellaria could meet dany, jon and cersei to discuss the undead, and Dorne prepares to Jon and Dany in north. When they find out that Battle between theon and his uncle, forced the golden company land in Dorne. Doran and his army hold golden company, till Theon and Yara joins them (after destroying their uncle) Cersei have to send Lannister army leaving Kingslanding unprotected. Jon and Dany after crushing the Undead army, march into Kingsland and conquer the Throne, ending the war.

    The Martells are my favorite house but I feel it was misrepresented on the show. Partly because Ellaria didn't care about honoring Oberyn just quick and pointless vengeance that will have poor consequences for the Martells. "We don't kill little girls in Dorne." Ellaria is basically the opposite of what Oberyn wanted but the show ignores it. Plus Doran is playing the longest possible game in the whole of Westeros except for maybe the white walkers. He's been plotting since Elia was murdered.

The story of Dorne was all about Ellaria in the TV Show. SHE was the main character with Jamie of that storyline. The entire Dorne plot was essentially boiled down to Oberyn & Ellaria vs the Lannisters

    • @andrewlynch4126
      @andrewlynch4126 Před 6 lety +108

      It's funny that Ellaria is the vengeful one since in the books she is specifically resentful of the cycle of vengeance and doesn't want her daughters running off to avenge their elder sisters after they die trying to avenge their father.
      For those who don't know D&D just write the show based on what they think the actor is good at, Steven Dillane makes a good "the world is fucked face" let's wire Stannis into situations that let us show that face, Lena Hadley is such a nice person let's write Cersei more sympathetically, Richard Madden would be good a romance let's turn Rob Stark's plot into a romantic tragedy. Pretty much every change from the books is because of this, I mean I can understand playing to an actor's strengths but it needs to be in service of the character not opposition to it. Random rant over.

      I think Dorne should have been completely left out of the show after Oberyn's death. I understand why D&D at first did not want to include it - the narrative was already huge and didn't need to get any bigger for a story already halfway through its second act by the end of Book 3 and Season 4. I actually think GRRM messed up by pulling Dorne into the story, as its inclusion was one reason the books got bloated and he has apparently found himself unable to complete the sprawling and artificially extended narrative.

      It's confirmed since D&D were responsible for the Dorne plot writing after Season 4 aka the last season when GRRM leaves the show. Some plot lines were developed before the show like when GRRM gave D&D showrunners a challenge to guess who Jon Snow's parents are so that panned out well into season 6 but the entire Dorne plot was all D&D. It's proof that they're incompetent writers which explains why the show dropped in quality with every season: years of planned out plotlines were used up so they came up with their own trash.

    "Spears are symbolic of single mindlessness and tunnel vision, when using an spear a soldier must focus his attention on one target"
    As a history enthusiast, mind you not an expert in any way, I got triggered by this. Spears and polearms, for that matter, are battlefield weapons designed to fight against multiple opponents, while on the other hand swords sidearms designed for self defense and dueling. So if a weapon is the most suited for fighting more than one opponent is the spear, because it gives you range. So it will place the most distance between you and your opponents. Mind you that without armor or at least a shield, no weapon is truly suited for multiple opponents. If you would go against multiple opponents, even if you have trained all your life, the odds are against you. What the polearm will allow you, however will not be to defeat your opponents but to keep you alive for longer.
    Besides what the Martells use on the show (have not read the books) is the Partisan, a very different weapon from the spear. Although somewhat similar looking to someone that doesn't know much about arms and armor, it is very different on use. A Partisan is a cut and thrust polearm, while the spear is a dedicated thrust polearm. One might think that the difference is too small, but consider this if you add more material(metal) to the end of the polearm making it long enough to have a blade on the end, instead of having a point. One you lose rigidity and now the point bends, because steel is flexible, so you lose thrusting capacity. Second, now you can also cut with your weapon, making you fight completely different as if you could only thrust with it. Third, now you have significantly more metal on the end of your weapon, making it heavier, which gives you more power but it will tire you quicker.
    Now, perhaps in the books their weapons are stated as spears and this is a mistake from the showrunners. Or perhaps they thought they would look cool, if they had a blade at the end instead of a point. One thing is clear however, they have no idea of how arms and armor work. Like seriously, just look at Gendry's hammer, that makes less sense than the dragons. Not only it would be stupidly heavy but the area of contact is rounded and so big that renders all the weight useless. So it would be as heavy as an sledgehammer but with half of its effectiveness. Sorry for the rant.

    I'm not sure how long you can continue this series, but please do more content! It is so good. You can really see oneself in some of the houses. Some more than others of course.

    They ruined The Martells in the show. I’m so glad they were better in the books and more developed .

    I'm very impressed with the detailed and thorough analysis of the GoT houses in your channel, well produced videos with great additional infographics cut together with clips from the show and illustrations. I really dig the semiotic analysis of the symbols and colors a lot, going to subscribe and look forward to more great work from all of you in the future

    I feel proud of Dorne, as it is inspired in the medieval history of Spain and Iberia. If u know peninsular history and Reconquista, u can actually apreciate a lot of coincidences (even in the details), similitudes and literal exact geopolitics around all Dorne. I think this happens aswell in the rest of territories of Westeros, but due to the particular history and culture of medieval Spain compared to the rest of Europe, so is Dorne to the rest of Westeros.
