And the last three countries I mentioned are among poorest countries on earth.

    • @Ucuz_
      @Ucuz_ Před 7 lety +133

      Varheim singapore, malaysia, indonesia, brunei and Philippines are part of malay archipelago, nusantara, or maritime SEA. And most of them are richer than those on the mainland SEA, or atleast not the on the bottom list of poorest countries like cambodia, myanmar and laos. Thailand? well same goes for Ethiopia, they are one of a few African countries who can resist European colonialist, but is Ethiopia better than Philippines? clearly not.

      We actually dont know (or dont know so much) about our crimes and errors for history in classes, schools. We just know about the struggle for independence and freedom for vietnam over 2000 years, and freed Cambodian from polpot genocide... Until now the internet is expanding.
      Many vietnamese who dont know the true, then they just disappointing for Cambodia that their fathers who shed blood too much in Cambodia to win power for the people from the hands of Pol pot. The international community also objected to Vietnam's intervention with Cambodia's pol pot, even until now!
      Maybe i will be cursed by someone Vietnamese, but i understand them, like Chinese also dont know too much the true for their history in vietnam thousands years. When I interact with them, I feel them very kind and gentle, unlike Vietnamese people who often think negatively about them for Chinese invasions in vietnam over 2000 years. just china's "political ambitions". Maybe someone will curse me: Khmer Empire invaded vietnam 5 times in the past, why u should sorry them?; but finally i realize we still have sins.
      We have been through a lot of war and understand exactly the Price of Peace. Today we always hope to contribute to building a peaceful world, although many countries always think badly of us by communism. But we are contributing to the maintenance of peace in Africa;
      🇻🇳👉many people always remember vn war and anti vn, but 2019 we stand out and organized "DPRK - USA Hanoi submit Vietnam" between Mr.Trump and Mr.Kim Jong-un, we had invested and hoped it could be successful so much for Peace, but not.
      Im so sorry for Cambodia! 🙏 🇰🇭🇱🇦

      Khmer empire is big. We were here in 8th century before thailand. So now I see how thailand adapted to our culture. Thailand started in 12th century..khmer Empire fall in the 15th century only because of war. Changed it to cambodia but people still call themselves khmer. We are still here and the temples are still here. We are strong people. We had war with khmer Rouge 1975 killing over 2 million people, still khmer live on with cultural and we still fighting to keep it alive. Now is that call "Weak"? I don't think so.

    Laos? In cultural aspect, the closest one to Thailand; so close that we can speak our own languages and understand each other. Vietnam? How can you not root for this country that singlehandedly fought the French, U.S., and China; like a big brother of Indochina.. and I also have met some cool Vietnamese people in my lifetime - the most based Asians. But well... politics of Cold War greatly divided us (our government was scared shitless of Communism) and as for nowadays, toxic nationalists’ comments always stir hate.

      Yes, it's quite sad... I am part Cham myself. I dont think Champa fared well because the Chams were outsiders, who were not native to mainland southeast asia. The primary native/indigenous groups are the Vietnamese and Khmer. They already lived there and were the original inhabitants of mainland Southeast Asia, along with several other smaller tribes/civilizations scattered throughout. The kingdoms that made up modern day Burma, Laos, and Thailand were primarily composed of migrants from Southern China, so they are not native either. But since the Chams arrived by way of the ocean, I feel like they were at a huge disadvantage in comparison to the people who arrived via land....

One of the maps was from 1951 and labeled Vietnam as "Indochina Vietnam" since it was before it split into North and South Vietnam. It also only had one Korea on it and also had countries like Tibet and French Africa. It was pretty cool. I still have it now.

      the Khmer-Mon and Austronesian people once were very close together in relation, civilazation influenced and maritime trade accross the sea.
      The Vat Kamnou prehistory site gave the most credibility for us about these two subgroup people. The DNA shown the Austronesian and Khmer-Mon People shared very close DNA from the 1rst millennium BC to 1rst AD. I believed this because Austronesian people were the most expert seafarer alongside the SEA coastline.
      For the Tai Kradai actually, it's hard to find the odest evidence. Because Tai Kradai date back only between 6th - 7th and the odest prehistory of Tai Kradai in SEA is found in Tham Lod cave. But the DNA is still mixed with the Khmer Mon people, different from the Ban Chiang prehistory site was very close to Khmer-Mon people.

    Ollie Bye, thanks for putting this together! Fellow viewers, one big thing to note is that the states that became dominant in this area had one thing in common: access to a large, fertile river valley;
    Irrawaddy for the Burmese.
    Chao Phraya for the Siamese.
    Mekong for the Chenla/Khmer; later also South Vietnam.
    Red River for Vietnamese.
    Larger stable sources of food = more people = more tax/larger armies (these states were known for imposing large agricultural tax, rather than trade tariffs)
    The Cham people (Champa), unfortunately, only had access to smaller river valleys, which explains why they had such a hard time repelling their stronger neighbors.
