    Producers around the world owe you money for making gaffers better at their jobs. All of your testing and education is incredible thank you!

    Chimera should take notes from DoPChoice and come out with a 8 rod quick release speed ring - similar to the rabbit rounder series.

    Andrew - here in the U.S. Chimera is less expensive than DoPChoice often by a good margin. They also offer more options for interiors. e.g. white interiors instead of silver if you want a softer, less specular look. They last for decades as you say, my oldest one is from 1997, and like you I've only ever had to change the rods. I don't have the Octa but have the regular boxes in XS, Small, and Medium, plus a 20' lantern. Thanks for all of your videos!

    Always great to watch your videos. I know I've certainly struggled assembling those large units so great to see your tips there.

    They are the best. I don't have the OCTA (I have the more shallow Panaura) but I have a bunch of others, love the medium and large shallow variants AND having different grades of diffusion AND different size grids including 20 and 30 degress. I also use the folding quick Bowens OCTA speed ring, one hole drilled out. I love the Chimera quick rings for rectangluar softboxes.

    That’s great. Just today I was looking a square softbox (big one). Any chance you do a video about the square one?

    Whenever I put a Chimera on an 18k the grips would buy me a beer.

    They are nice but when some simple fabric cost more than the light fixture itself, it gets to be a bit ridiculous. They go for about $5 per stitch 😂

    Chimera is top notch! I have many of their boxes and have never had a tear or rip. I like that they sell individual replacement parts and you can get diffusion in several strength variants for more control. I use my boxes for photography with strobes, and I can say that Chimera is substantially higher build quality even compared to top photo brands like Profoto RFI, Broncolor, and Elnchrom softboxes. The grip head adapter is very useful for larger boxes to avoid putting strain on flash heads. Not to mention made in the USA!

    great review! What are your thoughts on white vs silver interior octas? I assume more output from the silver but is there a benefit to the white lined version?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Před 5 měsíci

      I've only ever seen white ones used as a bounce, as in no diffusion on the front. I know a DP that uses a 7ft whine umbrella with a Hudson spider bouncing into it, super super soft

    Sorry but no matter how good the quality of this product is, and I really appreciate that they pay their workers fair money instead of slaving away in third world countries, but all these facts don't change the amount of time and frustration I've spent on old chimeras, thanks Aperture for The invention of the Light Dome , there are things in which I prefer to move on and give up the romance, they could have created the exact same product with the same quality just with the quick folding and it's a shame they didn't do that.
    Thanks for a great review as usual Andrew
