As we sat there listening to the carolers, I wanted to tell Brian that it was over now and that everything would be okay. But that was a lie, plus I couldn't speak anyway. I wish there was some way to go back and undo the past. But there wasn't. There was nothing we could do. So I just stayed silent and tried to telepathically communicate how sorry I was about what happened. And I thought of all the grief and suffering and fucked up stuff in the world, and it made me want to escape. I wished with all my heart we could just leave this world behind. Rise like two angels in the night and magically disappear.

In the middle of that quiet, I heard a soft clicking noise. At first the sound puzzled me; then I recognized it as that of a key in a lock. Brian panicked, standing from the couch, pulling me up with him as we attempted to make our break. But it was too late. The house's door clattered open, and the room's light flickered on.
A woman gasped. Through the open door I could see a sliver of carolers, some faces peering inside at the scattered tatters of money, some faces turn to the sky and the snow, now beginning to fall. And there, in front of them, in the room with us, stood the family, their outlines barely visible within the weight of the room's light. It was a light that shone over our faces, our wounds and scars. It was a light so brilliant and white it could have been beamed from heaven, and Brian and I could have been angels, basking in it. But it wasn't, and we weren't.

A friend showed me this movie in Junior year of High School. He thought it was a movie about gays and aliens; two of the things we were most interested in. At the end, when we really realized what was going on, the credits rolled. It was just me and him sitting in his darkened living room, the only light coming from a lamp. We felt so empty and at a loss for words.

This movie was among the most human, but also the most horrifying, that I have ever seen. No friggin' joke. The last 5-10 minutes was like a machete to my intestines.

it was so nostalgic and warm, which makes you feel kinship. The movie was excellent.

Just finished watching the movie for the first time. And I'm at a loss for words.
Very rarely does a movie make me nauseous, but this really made me feel numb to the core by the end. And knowing the events of the movie happen every day in real life... it makes me somewhat understand why we all have this desperate craving for escape. It's why we all cling to music, cinema, drugs, anything that makes us forget the horrors of the world we live in. And, me being a gay man, watching all those... encounters... happen, it makes me feel so uncomfortable in my own skin. Knowing those kinds of men exist has just shaken me up, and nothing could ever put into words how sorry I feel for those who relate to the plot in this film. I'm sorry that we live in a world where these things happen.
I'm glad this comments section exists, because the soundtrack really stuck out for me. It really gives such an introspective vibe. It's really good for staring at the ceiling at 3am, and I'll gladly use it for that.

This soundtrack makes me cry... Not only because of the movie but because like Neil, it makes me think of all the "fucked up suffering in the world", and how I wish I could also be an angel who would magically disappear.

i found this movie from an instagram edit thinking it was about 2 kids going on some adventure or something. when the movie ended i was speechless like literally speechless no movie has ever impacted me like this one did. i cant even explain how i felt and still feel about this movie. i was so connected to brian and neil for different reasons. this movie will always be my number 1 movie.

It's hard to accept the fact Harold left this world 2 years ago. I grew up listening to his beautiful music. He made lots of great records along with Brian Eno and Robin. RIP

I'm diagnosed with PTSD from childhood trauma, I should have stayed away from this film but in some way it helped me face my inner demons and realize I needed lots of healing to do. Shoegaze and Dream Pop helped me in so many ways. Especially when I was low and utterly depressed or thought of ending my life. I'd turn this album on and just cry my heart out, it soothed my soul because I knew I needed to get it out of my system. I'm speaking out because so many children go through sexual abuse as a kid. Just letting you know, your not alone in this world. No matter how lonely and fucked up you feel, in the end, you'll become stronger. That's what I think of anyway. Just find what motivates you in life. Trust me, I completely understand that black hole you feel. I may not know you, but I deeply care for you.

I was sexually, physically, mentally, emotionally and physically abused by my family as a child. After being in and out of therapy for three decades, I have a wonderful spouse ( the only person I feel safe with). The therapy is scary at times, but so worth it. I wouldn't have been able to have a healthy relationship without it.

Just found out about Harold Budd's death due to covid complications. 'Mysterious Skin' is my favourite film of all times, and the soundtrack is absolutely wonderful and ethereal. I tend to listen to it whenever I feel under the weather (it calms me down but I definitely don't feel better afterwards given what the film is about).
I hope this wonderful man had a great life, thank you so much Harold Budd for taking part in this amazing sountrack.

I've been listening to this album since I first watched back in 2006 or so. I would listen to it while going to sleep. I have never met anyone in person that actually listens to this album but I am glad to see that so many others have discovered it and has affected them in the same positive way it has for me.
Such a lovely and beautiful soundtrack. Very haunting. I also love the soundtrack to American Beauty, definitely worth checking out if you haven't heard it.
I listened to this while falling asleep in my dorm during college. Pitch-black room with this soundtrack barely audible. Reminded me of the swing set scene in the park. Best naps ever.
I saw this movie almost 10 years ago in a small art theater. It sticks with me to this day. I listen to the soundtrack almost on a daily basis. It's breathtaking to me and reminds me of what could be.

I often think I could have survived the physical, emotional, verbal and psychological pain my family inflicted on me. The sexual abuse effects me every day in so many ways. It transformed me into something I didn't recognize.

There’s something about the snowfall one that just hits right. I remember watching this movie when I was 12 or 13, not really catching the full impact of what the movie stood for. I knew it was about Sexual Abuse but I also just assumed this was just what happened as you grew because the trauma had already happened to me..But I felt connected to the story so deeply and it moved me. So I watched it more and more, grasping more detail and ideas every time. This movie is beautiful in every twisted way. I’ve shown it to a few friends and not one single time between the opening scene to the ending did we talk or not cry. It always impacts you when you watch it. Now at 23, it impacts me in a completely different way but I will always have a love for this movie. I really believe it was one of my coming of age movies. It helped me fight so many inner demons as I grew up and even now.

Even though the Cocteau Twins are one of my favorite bands and I generally love anything involving Harold Budd, this is the first time I've listened to this separately from the film. How have I never sat down and listened to this before?? I'm loving this.

I love this soundtrack so much. It almost has a scifi outerspace-ish feel to it at times which goes great with the movie. I cant believe this movie wasnt oscar nominated.
"Neil's Farewell", "Halloween" and "Brian's Nightmare" in particular make me feel like weeping inside. They remind me of a childhood I only realise now to have been lost and which I can never get back.

I can't help but to feel okay and bittersweetness when I listen to this music. I want to cry, but equally smile. In reality nobody gets to pick their hand, but they are in charge of how we play. I am a young gay male from Seattle Washington and I really can relate to this Beautifully dark story. I have shared similar experiences with the gay character and although its not okay, it can be comforting to know "its going to be okay" and that you can make a positive impact on the world by choosing to do the "right" thing. what ever is "right for you". And maybe what was right for the main character was giving acceptance to the life he was going to live with or with out his consent. . .
It's like walking into another street that have no ending .....I'm walking but my legs don't touch the ground. And I'm window shopping through this dark empty streets...and all I see is my memories of my past, my youth, my loneliness and my dreams..There's mixed up feelings of myself fighting with this world to be alone....

i just watched this movie last night and kept thinking how much the music sounded like cocteau twins, only to find out that robin guthrie was one of the composers. this soundtrack is a perfect accompaniment for such a deeply emotional film. rip harold budd 💔

Neil's Theme goes deep into my soul
This music hits me so hard, it has this stagnant brooding that just ruminates without much release or explosion. An almost still-water type sadness. Kind of like the sadness one would feel in a forgotten small town, where there's no one care. Everybody's too miserable feeling like the rest of world's just left them back. Without much acknowledgement of their small existence they're just left in the town where time doesn't move forward, and nothing really goes on.
This is most likely thanks to the mood throughout the film. Especially the trailer.

This album is not sad for me as many people seems to perceive, it evoques me a beautiful cold night, no winds, all static, almost sensually frozen, and me in the stop of my bus, watching the quiet street, lights flashing of the coffee store, clicking anothers shades of colours from the shops, a soft delicate mist around the tall lights of the road, i breathe misty, frozen, alive air, the night, never ends, the streets, live like a static paradise, this album is so magical and charming, i listen it when i get back to home on an empty bus 1 hour and i am sleeping inside, like another skin, every lonely city, every mist, every artificial nocturnal shades of lights, my skin my mind becomes, another, misterious hours of my life
I’ve listened to the melody now for 3 years. Brings the ears at peace but launders for my soul to escape this darkness. I rest again one more night maybe tomorrow shall be better.

walking down the street in an entirely dark, entirely still, entirely silent northeastern suburb at night. it's familiar, as if you've lived there all your life even though you know you've never seen this place before. the houses are all colonial style, very similar looking: nice place, but very sterile and desolate. everything is blue black save for one house with a window illuminated in yellow. you look in and clearly see a teenage couple, sitting on a pale pink bed and holding hands while looking at each other intently. they don't notice you. you keep walking.
That's how this soundtrack feels to me.

Nice man, nice. But I'm sorry, my inner urban prowler couldn't help but edit in my - I mean his - own bit at end. "You pause for a session of intense yet stealthful masturbating in front of the aforementioned window before moving on, in search of the next illuminated window and it's legal teen couple occupants".
I would say that this is the most fitting soundtrack I've ever heard altogether with Blade Runner's. It is not just in the same vein of the movie but IT IS the movie in sound format - feelings, contemplation, bittersweetness and that dubious sensation of not really knowing what's going on.
I keep coming back to this. Guthrie and Budd was such an inspired choice for the soundtrack. It all seems to come from the last scene, when transcendence is found in the act of sharing. I love how Guthrie sneaked in a paraphrase of the main riff from Heaven or Las Vegas. Some moments remind me of Budd's collaboration with Eno, The Pearl album.
Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd, just went together so well, not only on this album, but it seems on every project they ever did together. So many movies are superseded by the music album created and other soundtracks made for other movies ― You are listening to one such album that did just that.....!!!!
Harold was so incredibly talented, he leaves behind an enormous amount of work, which we all will be listening to for years to come. What an kind and gentle soul he had. I hope his exit, was like all beautiful dreams he inspired us to have.

One awesome song that's missing here is Cocteau twins - Crushed, this song literally brought back life into me.
I found the movie through TikTok and watched it yesterday. didn’t think much of it. After watching the first few minutes of it I started to cry, it got worse and I started to scream and cry. The scene where Neil is all bloody and almost getting killed by the man while he’s in the bathtub made me feel so numb. I had to pause it and take in what I could. I couldn’t breathe or anything for that matter. Such a sad but good movie at the same time. The visuals (apart from those scenes) were very breath taking in its own. The storyline was good and just over all a rollercoaster of emotions. No movie has ever made me feel this empty since cherry and requiem for a dream. (Those held to the topic of drug abuse) but this one was an all new experience for me. I will never rewatch it but damn..

It's fucked up but it's real unbelievable acting from all the cast mainly jgl terrific screenplay beatifically directed great soundtrack 10/10 film for me it's that good if you can watch it without dying a little inside
And important. I don't know of any other film about this subject matter like this. Most films about child rape or child abuse sort of study it from the outside. Without seeming to darkly pat myself on the back, something similar happened to me as a child and the film right down to its tiniest detail hauntingly captures what the whole process is like, at least for me. And a lot of that is the impeccable artistry and craft of the whole film. Anyone wanting to have even the vaguest understanding of it should watch this film.
There's two films that speak to me and my childhood for vastly different reasons. For light and fluffy (ish), "About A Boy" minus the well intentioned adult that wanted to be involved. Then this one, though there are extremes here that I never experienced.
As I listen to "Snowfall", remembering the scene... What I think about is not how messed up Neil's life was - though that was remarkable - it's how much of a heart Wendy had, that she saw something to love in his cold, dark heart. I have the same awe of my wife.
This music is positively addictive!

this soundtrack always makes me cry, i remember the first time when i heard it, this type of music wasn’t really attractive to me, but somehow i really enjoyed it, and i asked for the name of the album.
since then a year has passed and things changed but anytime i come back to this album i remember everything, every instance in which i listened to it, or at least it feels like that.
about the movie:i saw the picture in which neil and wendy are in the snowfall and i thought it was just a movie about teenagers. that was until i saw it on the new years eve, when i felt so alone, just me, i remember how i watched the clock and it said 00:05 and i was crying, i finished the movie before 00 but i just sat there, then i walked to my mom and wished her a happy new year, we hugged and then i went and watched the fireworks from my kitchen window.
this was the first movie i cried to.
some months ago i meet someone and he said he knew that i watched mysterious skins and asked me about it, i gave him the link to this song and i hope he will listen to it.
this comment section reminds me that im not alone but at the same time make me so sad

Why this beautiful soundtrack isn't on iTunes is beyond me. I would buy the entire album. It sounds like your levitating between asleep and awake.
It used to be! I bought my digital copy on iTunes in February 2011 and at one time, they removed the track "Snowfall" and it never came back. Thankfully, I still have it saved on my external drive and on my phone.
