James Monroe: The Era of Good Feeling

- The first four decades of what has come to be called the “American Experiment” were turbulent in the extreme. First there was a revolution to be won, despite the opposition to its goals expressed by nearly a third of the population. A failed attempt at a national government under the Articles of Confederation led to the creation of a strong federal government, creating disputes over the role of state’s rights that continue to the present day. Partisan politics created divides so wide that at one point a sitting Vice-President, Aaron Burr, killed a former Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, in an illegal duel. Though the causes of their enmity were many, at their core was a fundamental disagreement over politics.
There were armed insurrections over taxes, over veteran’s benefits, over slavery. During the John Adams administration, the United States fought an undeclared naval war with France. Jefferson sent the US Navy and Marines to fight a war along the North African coast and ordered an embargo against trade with Britain that proved ruinous to American commerce. Quarrels with Britain over free trade and freedom of the seas led to another, nearly disastrous war with the British Empire. Settlers struggling into the western lands of the Northwest Territory and the southern lands found hostile tribes opposing them and a federal government unable to defend them.
Then came a period of eight years of relative peace, during which American commerce thrived, the nation's borders expanded through peaceable means, and the United States gained respect on the world stage. In the wake of the tumultuous years that followed, it became known as the Era of Good Feelings. It was the period of the administration of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, and the last of the Founders to hold that office.

People forget that a lot of the founding fathers were not some old guys some were actually pretty young like Monroe and Hamilton.
The average age was 44 with a dozen of them being under 35. I know times are different but I'm not sure I'd want the modern 25-30 yr old writing any new documents 😂
Especially those that participated in the revolutionary war. Its only recently that we have people so old they can't function.
The age difference between Monroe and his wife was not considered taboo at that time. There's no need to interject our sensibilities about it into an age when it wasn't viewed in a poor light.

This can be easily deduced by the fact that some Americans (of the US variety) claim to believe another Civil War would be just fine. Freaking insanity.

Interesting fact they both died on the SAME July 4th 1826. I heard that Adams last words were supposedly 'at least Jefferson lives.' but he had passed away a few hours before.

Perhaps that's because many suspect that we will be in the midst of a second Civil War. This second Civil War may either be a new birth of freedom, or the death of the American experiment of government for the people, of the people, and by the people.

For sho... from the initial run, each of the first four plus the seventh are pretty much household names in U.S. history, and yet Nos. 5 and 6 are relatively unknown despite their massive contributions (whether as POTUS or adjacent to it)

Hahaha nice. It's sort of the opposite here: when British people imitate a U.S. accent, most seem to do something from the south, and more specifically Texas.

And apparently Adams' last words were "Thomas Jefferson still survives," although, in fact, he had died five hours earlier that day.

As an American I appreciate the lessons in our history, and hope that younger viewers find them interesting, too. What is taught in schools is not always correct, a "shocking" lesson I learned as an adult, lol. Those who do not study their history are doomed to repeat it, sadly true.

I believe John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were the other 2 presidents who died on July 4th. Both of them the same year actually.
James Monroe probably ranks in the top 15 as a president. Not because be really did much of anything notable, but presided over the Era Of Good Feelings. There was the Missouri Compromise and the Panic of 1819 that are some marks against him though. We had a hell of a good Secretary of State in JQA though.

I have visited Monroe's Highland estate several times and the house there now is actually a later enlargement of Monroe's original modest place, not much more than a log cabin. It is directly across the road from the entrance to Jefferson's Monticello, which is, of course, far grander (as is James Madison's Montpelier in Orange, Virginia). Further down the road one comes to an estate once home to Jefferson's secretary. It had a modest Federalist house but in 1985 a massive new home was constructed for John Kluge, the richest man in America at the time, and a 1200 acre vineyard was developed. Stuff happened and the property ended up around 2011 in the hands of one Donald J. Trump and is marketed today as "the Albemarle Estate at Trump Winery."
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on the same July 4th hours apart. It was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. 😢 God Bless America

Slavery was a global institution that dates back thousands of years. It was not exclusive to James Monroe, America, or the Europeans. In fact, through the creation of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the founding fathers led the way for the abolishment of formal slavery worldwide.

I had a relative come over from Italy for a vacation, he basically schooled me on American history while he was here. I did very well in History while in school but he knew details and dates beyond me.
So yes I agree with the "inflammatory statement"- "How little people in America know about their own history". It's not inflammatory if it's true(though todays generation may offer a difference of opinion about truth....)

Louisiana at the time was much bigger than the current state. It was basically everything west of the Mississippi river up to Spanish held territory in the mountains/west coast.

Definitely doesn't memorize it... you can see his eyes travel from camera right to left as he's reading what's probably a prompter. He's just very good at reading without sounding like he's reading.
Some of us yanks are educated and know the history of our country, maybe not every finite detail as gone over in this video like almost every founding father was from Virginia heritage but American public schools are lacking in history education. Thankfully I went to catholic school as a kid and had a great Ivy League driven public high school.

16:45 Yeah no as a Canadian when I was in grade 7 and was learning about the war of 1812 in history class we all laughed when our teacher told us the reason the White House was white was because the British/Aka Canadian British (Brits who were born in Canada but because Canada wasnt a country my teacher called them Canadian British) burned it.

Of course the two national capitals named after US Presidents are Monrovia, in Liberia, as noted but of course Washington, DC, is the other.
Just a brief note about the U.S. senators chosen to serve the people. Originally, they were chosen by their state legislators, who were indeed elected by the people. With the 17th Amendment in 1913, the states' voters chose their states' U.S. senators. I don't recall why; it may have been a reform to bypass partisan political machinery, I'm guessing.
Monroe marrying a 17 year old is fine by certain states modern age or consent.

7:09... Louisiana was French, not Spanish. The US bought the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803.
