This layout is amazing! I get the transpennine express train regularly and have passed Heaton lodge so many times; I love how someone’s full on committed to making a really accurate model of it. He’s really captured the atmosphere of the real thing :D

For a man not to know a lot about trains. The guys is an absolute genius.
It will nice to c some vids of live views with trains running, both in the cab, along the track an surrounding areas.
    Awesome project, well done, Simon!

As soon as he mentioned "this layout is actually about 200 feet long" my jaw dropped straight to the floor and I started laughing "this is just sick".
But I had read a bit about this layout in BRM and this video shows it in a more advanced state, and I have to say that the result stands rock solid.
It has all the atmosphere of the railway in the rundown industrial West Yorkshire area of the 1980s, and yes, Simon knows his static grass, it looks very like the real living stuff you find on embankments and between running lines.
Having done about 90% of the work himself is also a great achievement, this is a slab of base board to cover.
So I hope to see this layout for real somewhere in the future, when we are allowed to flock together again.

Suggest considering building a small dry ice theatrical machine. Basically it is a container with hot water with a fan. Put the dry ice in the hot water and turn on fan. Go to a theatrical lighting supplier and you will see the idea then when understand the principle you can customer build to your needs.

I work in Theatres as a technician and we use Haze machines for the mist effect. They are less tacky & cheesy than a generic smoke machine, plus you can really refine the haze levels and very easy to control. Plus nearly silent. Would highly recommend, tiny machines can fill rooms from 1% to 100% haze level. Plus not as hot as smoke so tends to stay perfectly still like real mist

Brilliant absolutely amazing that's exactly how I make things to reality because I am a artist as well and I know what you mean by watching trains in the distance very far away coming towards me very quickly with a light on gliming away in the distance and just as you said you need to have it on a bigger scale to create that same affect as you see it with your very own eyes and hearing the sounds of the trains passing over the joints on the tracks as well travelling through the steel frame as it's coming down the tracks long before the train it's self I could make something like this easy because I made my own model grass every colour of the planet and by the way my father was from Yorkshire as well but left the UK before my time

@@richardbradley2335 Hey Mister, no not really. "People make a place" as in, this video is about the people (well, Simon George) who made a place (Heaton Lodge). I'm sure lots of folk really want to see this massive model railway, just like you and I. This vid is the story of the layout’s creation, the creator’s motivation, how his plans for showing it have had to change because of the pandemic etc. The views of the layout are teasers. Simon said (hehe) that he was setting up some camera arrangement to be able to best show it off virtually. This is probably very difficult to do since the effect of being in the room with it and one’s brain trying to process the physical scale will be lost when shown on a constrained screen on CZcams. All that effort of the stupid amounts of static grass and ridiculous amount of track just won’t have the same wow factor. It’s the difference between going to the Brecon Beacons and looking at a postcard. Model railways are like theatre productions and their promoters want to be able to show them in the best way they can. By what Simon says (can’t help myself), he is somewhat commercially minded and has other stakeholders (Heljan, Peco) who are keen to ensure it is displayed to best effect. Let’s wait and see what they do...
