Modular House Music // My Best Setup Yet

  • I know i've done tons of chats on my modular setup. But this setup has been so hard to change up! I don't want to say its perfect, and i don't want to say i'll NEVER buy anything new, but anytime i do i just go back to this same setup. Its all focused on a controlled random approach. Where i let the modular be the modular but give it training wheels to stay in its lane without falling into the gutter and dragging my motivation down with it.

      Benders new mothership is a cure for GAS. What else could you need? Sure there are other modules but if you go through his design it is well thought out and pretty much complete. And he has room to swap stuff in and out if he wants to try something else in the blender. Then again, it cost as much as a house.

    Absolute best module to combine with Mimetic Digitalis: Doepfer A-151 Quad Sequential switch. Patch Steppy into the switch I/O input, then patch the 4 outputs into N, X, Y, R. Use another Steppy channel to advance the switch every 2, 3 or 4 bars. Now you get the simplicity of 4 notes repeated across a row, maybe 2x times. Then twice through a single Y column. Then 2 bars of random, then 2 bars of N, stepping through two rows. Then Random means that the next time through, you’ll be on a different X or a different Y. Or maybe not... controlled randomness!

    Dude, I love how approachable you make modular synthesis. It's so common for people to get crazy complex with a patch for the sake of it, but you've honed this system down to this super musical case! No frills, just purpose-driven playability - awesome.

    very cool train of thought and presentation of this idea on how to use randomness in small doses. I think Lightbath called this 'gardening' in regards to playing your modular and I always liked that. You set a certain situation with it and then you garden that patch until you have something cool that would not be there if the modular wouldn't talk back :D

    Love your skills as always, not too sure whether samples can be easily comped with a random sequenced bass or lead line? Without setting all the parameters for the rhythmic and harmonic shifts within the riff the unison lines outputted will be just on the wrong side of close enough for jazz - almost like a pianist trying to play along with a never heard before jazz song but they have no fingers. Some of the noted they play will fit but mainly, not so much. A harmonic envelope generator that could track key harmonic pitch value and output a control voltage within the sample would be a game changer for improvisation with modular. If there is anything like that I'd personally be interested for my setup.

    • @Jimmyzegg
      @Jimmyzegg Před 3 lety

      If I'm understanding what you're saying, the Scales module does that. Mimetic is sending random CV into scales, and scales quantizes that CV into the notes he has set that match the samples he is using.

    • @outlier5844
      @outlier5844 Před 3 lety

      @@Jimmyzegg I see that but what I'm hearing isn't gelling and notes stick out in their pitch and rhythm which would require, to align more musically, some kind of envelope follower type afair that tracked the syncopation and pitch of the sample and converted the pitch into the correct cv and gate somehow. Failing this you would have to make sure the four notes you chose will fit over the chord changes wherever the mimetic spits them out into the quantizer. That task would get incrementally more difficult as the length and harmonic complexity of the sample increased.
