    The pelikan's perch blog brought up another interesting point - the souveran model that is turning 40 years old is actually the Souveran M400 - and the M800 was released in 1987. I wonder what an M400 version of this would look like. Also, I am very sad that pelikan no longer uses transparent celluloid in its barrel bindes, for cost reasons. This is a nearly $2000 pen and I dont think expense should be spared!

      Agreed. One of the bigger selling points of pelikan souveran pens is the translucent/transparent stripes. Very disappointing

      I agree. Pelikan’s are far less appealing to me without the transparent striped barrel. I’m glad I got my M1000 before they made the change.

    A pen of that price shouldn’t have baby’s bottom.

    If it were slightly translucent and you could see the ink level it would be nearly perfect. Lovely pen and thanks for sharing.

    One of my memoir writing students dated the Pelikan N American rep in the 70-80s. He gave her a two chick version of this pen's eponymous precursor. She never used it so gave it to me in mint condition knowing I'd love it. I had the nib meistered to a m/f Italic. It's a phenomenal pen. Some flexibility, great feel, and although I have big hands, the 800 posted is just perfect for me. Part of pen owning is history and friendships.

    Thanks for reviewing the pen, so we can judge whether the $$$ is justified. I would rather go for potential three Pelikans on discount than this M800. At that price point, the pen needs to offer a few more features or qualifiers, so as to stand out from other pens in this range.

    Thanks. Why the price of this pen is so high?

    Beautiful version of one of my favorite pens of all time. I have 18 of these in various colors, nib sizes and grinds. My go to pen. But not the least bit interested due to the metal section. So it’s a pass! Pretty but no.

      I agree completely about the metal section!

      I am still mad about the change in the binde transparency, however I could get over that, the metal section however will always end up being a hard pass for me.

    Thanks for the review. I have a number of new and vintage Pelkans. I prefer the Pelikan vintage nibs, but I'm okay with my newer ones. However, I would not purchase this anniversary model: too expensive, and the "look" isn't that special in my opinion to justify the price. For Pelikan's 100 year in business anniversary, they issued 2 special M700 series pens, one in sterling silver plate with barleycorn finish (M750) and the other in gold plate (M760). They're still available on the secondary market, look very nice - and are substantially more affordable than this 40th Soverain model. And to top if off, both the M750 and M760 have something this new one does not: an ink window.

    It's currently half price at the moment on Cult Pens. €1290

      Cult Pens is the very best place to buy fountain pens, or any sort of pen from, as they stock every make....................

    It is definitely a beautiful pen, I very much like my Pelikan Souverän M800 in the Renaissance Brown and I yearn for one in the green/black configuration. However, I think I'd miss the translucency in the barrel. The price tag? Definitely out of my reach, but I'm not exactly the target demographic here either. Thanks for another splendid review!

    You know, would it hurt if only just once, a quick brown DOG jumped over a lazy fox? The sentence would still be a pangram. I have a border collie here that would most certainly be doing all the jumping. Love your content. Thanks for the reviews.

    What is your opinion of the M800 Souveran green demonstrator pen?

    • @richardsealey3626
      @richardsealey3626 Před 8 měsíci +1

      I have a M800 demonstrator pen, and mine does not have a green stripe as it is completely clear....................

      @MrAndrew1953 Před 8 měsíci +3

      It’s lost a lot of skin in my view now it’s lost the transparency for the ink level. Pretty important with a piston filler. The extra band on the barrel hasn’t done a lot for the aesthetics.

    I have 2 M805 (like silver more than gold), one Demonstrator (for about 450€) and one Stresemann (350€), wich I like both very much. I think this model is much too expensive for an 800 model! Maybe an real Pelikan collector would buy it? I like pens, but I'm a writer, not a collector and would rather look for an M1005 and save some money too 😊

  • @MrAndrew1953

    I’m not a fan of that centre band. Overly decorative. The pen has a strong design,it doesn’t need it.

    Disappointed they didn’t add the chicks back in for the old logo. Overall, it's pretty gaudy, which is out of character for Pelikan.

    Given that the Sovereign are beautiful pens (I have a M1000), that ring in the middle of the barrel is a complete nonsense IMHO. I can buy the golden section and the golden knob, but that ring is totally out of context. I do not comment the problems of hard starting in a pen of thousand of euros.

  • @osirisgolad
    @osirisgolad Před 8 měsíci +4

    Triple the price of a regular M800 for a monotone nib that hard starts, a design element that makes the pen uglier and an opaque pen body. I think I'll pass, thank you.

    Is "chick" now politically incorrect?
