  • The idea of repatriating immigrants is not a new one, but a German political party is now advocating such a move as a practical possibility. It is said that the AFD is threat to democracy, but is that necessarily a bad thing?

It most certainly is as regards most recent immigrants. Despite being told the UK would use a 'points based system' to only bring in productive immigrants, masses of unproductive immigrants, who are a net financial cost to this country - making indigenous people less well off - have been let in.

Even if you have an Augustus type dictator with the sheer willpower to constrain their power and to generally act benign, it leads the door wide open for a Caligula as the next leader

As millions of gatecrashers have no passport or ID the only place they could be returned to would be the last country they arrived from which is France. Yes a very awkward genie to get back into the bottle. One alternative is to remove access to all benifits including housing, the NHS and free legal aid. In other words if you cannot support yourself and have no ID then you don't get in in the first place. Most countries adopt this policy or something similar. Why we have to be the odd man out is beyond me.

A population do not have to cooperate with each other but must be moving in the same direction.
Plato wrote about kinship within a population for democracy to work.
==In Plato's Republic, the character of Socrates is highly critical of democracy and instead proposes, as an ideal political state, a hierarchal system of three classes: philosopher-kings or guardians who make the decisions, soldiers or "auxiliaries" who protect the society, and producers who create goods and do other ...
==In Plato's Republic, Socrates depicts democracy as nearly the worst form of rule: though superior to tyranny, it is inferior to every other political arrangement.
==Plato believed that expertise is the critical attribute of a leader; He criticizes democracy of seldom producing such characters. Rather, it elects popular spinsters who are effective in manipulating popular opinion.
==Socrates Feared Democracies Would Elect Demagogues
Just as he feared majority rule could lead to misinformed voting, he feared that those running for office themselves would lack the wisdom needed to lead and might use their elected position for personal gain rather than the common good.
      ==Why did Socrates dislike democracy?
Socrates felt that democracy could only work well if individuals were educated, knowledgeable, and able to think critically. In the opinion of Socrates and Plato, democracy was subject to the influence of demagogues who preyed on the emotions and prejudices of the multitude.

My wife wanted our children to eat bread, and to give the matter an appearance of genuine choice, she allowed them to make the exciting pick between white bread or brown, although in terms of nutrition there was nothing to choose between them. What are you talking about Simon? Countries creating circumstances that cause foreigners to move out in large numbers happens all the time. This includes countries that can defined as "liberal democratic". In most cases without force being applied.
This has happened across pretty well all countries of the former Soviet Union, former communist eastern Europe, Yugoslavia, Dominica in the Caribbean, and in countries as disparate as Israel and Fiji.
What's the magic formula in most cases? The country in question simply decides it will prioritise its own culture and refuses to formalise a response the requirements and demands of incomers. It's the "like it or leave" approach. And take your language, religion, high crime rate, jarring customs, whatever it is, with you.

Democracy is too easily undermined by outside influences and inside subversives . Also it relies , to work properly , on an interested swiched on voter population that has no loyalty to any party but judges each on past performance , doing what they said they would . The British working man's way of voting Labour because his father , and his father before him did just does not cut it today , things have changed . A strong nationalist leader is now needed , the present mob of disparate activists and university subversive thrown out and replaced with a handfull of people whose loyalty to the nation is without doubt. Churchill said that democracy was the worst way to run a government, apart from all those other methods which have been tried from time to time. He knew the limitations. Is the problem we face today not do much with democracy itself as with (1) the party machines, which now have so much control over candidate selection, something that perhaps began with Labour's women only shortlists. A while back it was suggested in the Telegraph that a young Margaret Thatcher would not even be selected as a candidate by today's Tory Party, on the basis of her personal beliefs. Reason number (2) is the apathy of the voters, as demonstrated by the low turnouts in the local elections, particularly in London where just 18% could be bothered.

Never going to happen. The country's coffers are precariously balanced and utilise the taxes of immigrants, however measly, to prop up our system. Why on earth we don't demand full auditing of our country's accounting is beyond me but, I'm guessing, a) the job will be far too tiresome for those paid to do it and b) it would show just how much is wasted by said people we pay to do it. Our govt actors aren't going to show us their level of ineptitude and they know they rely on immigrant taxes to keep their show on the road. Would yearly audits show that immigrants bring in less than they take out when assessed as a whole? Potentially, but I'm guessing it's show the level of incompetence in State spending on councillors' coffees and MP's abandoned vanity projects. We, the taxpayers, need full transparency in how our taxes are spent. Or, as an alternative, simply tax the 1% of earners a little more. Why on earth the mid wits in this country find taxing the uber wealthy a problem is beyond rationality. For example, changing capital gains to be taxed at the same rate as income tax for the very highest 'earners' might raise £12bn of extra tax a year. This isn't money they've earned through hard graft, this inherited wealth to such an extent that they're making a passive income per year of millions. That's a lot of dosh per year to spend on infrastructure. To put that into perspective, why shouldn't Sunak pay £1.8m on the money he 'earns' passively from his investment portfolio rather than the £808k he's paying currently? He makes something like £14m on passive income per year (that's not including his billionaire wife's finances). I honestly cannot understand why Joe Public are so adverse about the 1% paying a little more. The argument that our top earners would leave is fear mongering paid for ads by said 1%. Who was it that left for Singapore but then came back due to missing our culture. Was it Dyson or Ratcliffe, maybe? Would it really be so bad of the Sunak's used their Greencards and left? The wife has only very recently changed her non-dom status after being forced to. How many years has she not paid into this country? She's made a steal whilst here. Sure, get het-up about boat people but look at the 250k per year Modi deal Sunak has made and don't forget that Modi refused to disallow their dependants. Yes, immigration is a problem but the mismanagement of our country's finances may be the biggest culprit. No, govt under any party will do anything to rectify this because why would they, no one will upturn the trough that feeds them.

More people didn't bother to vote than voted for Yousaf.
More people didn't bother to vote than voted for Khan.

More people didn't bother to vote than voted for the Tories at the last general election.
    Do you see a pattern?
Think about it after the next election when you spend the following 5 years crying in your beer.
More people don't bother to vote than vote for any single party...
    Just let that sink in..
The "clever people" will tell you that voting makes no difference
    Are you feeling clever yet?
Vote for anyone but the main parties, if no other party is standing spoil your ballot paper.
Not voting is not a protest, all that achieves is to help these useless politicians stay in power with minimal votes.
Labour/Tories makes no difference which one wins, the real power lies with the civil service which never changes.
None of the main parties will put them back in their box.
Liz truss said she wanted to sort out the civil service and she didn't last long.
Sunak had already destroyed the economy so don't listen to all the bullshit coming from the establishment.
They are all a waste of space, but why help them to sit in their seats for years on end taking the money?

How will migration eventually be controlled? Well when Europe reaches a tipping point ( and it will because unlimited migration is ultimately unsustainable) a crisis will occur and electronic borders will be suggested which will entail a social credit system. Any illegal movement will automatically decimate the person’s social credit making illegal movement very difficult. These ideas are already in the pipeline and we can almost guarantee will happen

In reality we dont have real democracy in the UK, we have oligarchy, rule by an elite minority. When our main right wing party drifts so far to the left that it almost indistingishable from our main left wing party, we are in a dangerous situation that could lead to serious civil unrest.

If you were more intelligent than a fart you would know that the Tories have never drifted to the centre let alone to the left:
      1) What is so Left-Wing about the Tories protecting our highly unethical economic system which perpetuates inequality, debt, and poverty?
      2) What is so Left-Wing about introducing a fake living wage that is a pittance?
      3) What is so Left-Wing about our relationship with America?
      4) What is so Left-Wing about the British Establishment blindly pledging allegiance to 🇮🇱?
      5) What is so Left-Wing about successive British governments funding and encouraging 🇮🇱 to oppress 🇵🇸?
      6) What is so Left-Wing about foreign policies of Tories regarding Palestinians?
      7) What is so Left-Wing about Tories never apologising about Britain's highly unethical actions in foreign countries?
ALL of the above apply to every Tory government we've had for centuries, therefore they have always remained on the Right.

When I studied politics at A-level, there was the idea of radical democracy, which meant that democracy wasn't absolute and could be improved upon by such means as devolution, extending the vote and greater representation. It's obvious that devolution has led to less accountability, extending the vote is probably what's led to Labour and the Conservatives fighting over an incoherent and sometimes self-contradictory centre ground, and greater representation through party lists has led to a poorer calibre of decision-maker and bad outcomes. Finally, the fallacy of radical democracy or constitutional reform for the sake of improving democracy has led to the proliferation of career politicians - party fanatics no more useful than bureaucrats but just as expensive.

It makes no difference which type of democracy we have. The system used in Ireland was of the proportional representation type, ended up in the same mess lately. No democracy or any system can be other than corrupt when the politicians are all corrupted, bought and paid for before they ever see power. All by the same dark power.

    Some interesting points Simon.
    Also some dubious ones.
However, you don't address the question of why our particular democracy is such a failure.
To cut a long story short, it is a cultural problem. Democracy requires a properly educated, fully informed, mentally determined population in order to function.
We don't have these. We also have Political Parties that operate in such a way that no decent open- minded person would even consider joining them.
Not sure what to call what we have.
    A Mediocracy? A Kleptocracy?
    A Conformocracy? An Oxbridgocracy?
Whatever the name we have governments that unquestionably accept the legitimacy of the UN, IMF, WTO, WORLD BANK , NATO, etc.
All of which are both non-democratic and anti-democratic.
