- On its surface, the eight-episode Apple TV+ series Sugar is a private detective story wrapped in film noir with an air of mystery surrounding it. John Sugar (Colin Farrell) takes a case for legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell) to find his missing granddaughter, but as he attempts to uncover what happened, there’s bound to be secrets that someone will have wanted to keep buried. As you follow the investigation, it becomes clear that there are things going on with Sugar that have a deeper explanation not immediately presenting itself.
Episode 6 of Sugar, entitled “Go Home,” finally provided some specific clarity as to what the private investigator’s true purpose is. Having already watched the entire season, Collider got the opportunity to chat with Farrell about the series, his character, and the reveal. During the interview, he talked about what a collaborative process the season was, how he approached figuring out John Sugar, the inspiration he took from the noir detective genre, getting to drive around Los Angeles in that incredible car, figuring out how to portray Sugar’s flashback episodes, fine tuning the best time to make that big character reveal, the connection between Sugar and Melanie (Amy Ryan), and that there is more to explore with this character, even though they haven’t been picked up for a Season 2 yet.
Sugar is available to stream on Apple TV+

I didn’t see that episode 6 reveal coming AT ALL! I was like WTF! 😱
Apple is killing it. Love this guy
seriously ey, foundation for all mankind, silo, invasion, show after show that just slaps.
@@summersoldier1003 yes yes and yes! You speaking my language!
@@summersoldier1003Severance!
@@TheBroz haven't watched that yet keep looking at it. I'll pick it up today with that recommendation:)
Yes, we love SUGAR and yes we want a second season!
Sugar is actually great without the twist. The twist def adds more mystery on who has the girl and why his most trustworthy partner isn’t telling him the truth.
Love the show! Love the twist! Apple has somehow hijacked my imagination with Film noir meets Sci-fi, Colin Farrell and a ‘66 Corvette!!!
The timing of the reveal is perfect, and makes the show stand out.
I thought it was some goverrnment-medical-conspiracy-super-soldier retired to become a private eye story...and then... 👽!!! I've never been so shocked! I love it & hope the response from fans pushes a season 2 out for serious consideration! I Love Colin Farrell & SUGAR!❤
i wasnt shocked at all. i thought it was all in his head, like a weird hallucination. youre telling me that im now watching a sci fi show?
@@spacekitt.nIf you think about it. It's implied from the beginning.
There's a reason why he's fan of old movies. That's how he learnt human behaviour. Emulates it.
Had a sneaking suspicion during the cocktail party episode (3) when Ruby was debriefing him and all the other guests. She says "we're here to observe these people not participate in their lives". He also describes being a detective as his "stated profession". But then I just dismissed it, and it came back to slap me in the face. I frackin love it!!!
I love Colin Farrell. Amazing actor. Def want a second season. Very surprising twists.
I NEVER saw that coming! It’s a pleasant twist, I just hope it doesn’t get overly otherworldly and stay somewhat grounded.
Been a long long time since a show surprised me like Sugar has !! As a previous poster said, the story did not need that twist but it certainly adds A WHOLE NEW LEVEL.... Needs a second season !!
I love Collin Farrell and I love Sugar. What a great show and a fantastic character. I love the mix of current life and film noir mixed together. I grew up watching black and white mysteries and detective stories which makes Sugar double the pleasure. There has to be a season 2, 3, etc.
Yes season 2 please 😎😎
I enjoyed the show .. sure deserves a second season.. Great interview thank you both
Thank you!
It’s so good! My favorite part of the show is all the humanity, good and bad. The kindness Sugar has amongst all the evil, and how he appreciates the goodness in people. It’s beautiful and relatable.
Love this show for so many reasons, one of them being the absence of romantic relationship - so refreshing. Hope they do a second season.
Fantastic interview . Such a great guy . “ no worries love “
Thank you!
I have just sat through watching the entire season for a second time... This is a beautiful series and even if there isn't a second season, this one season will go down as one of my favourite of all time.
The nuances in Colin Farrell acting is absolute top tier and something that really shines on the second viewing when you know what you are looking for.
There are so many levels to this series that are just there and allow the viewer to explore themselves...
For me, this series left a lasting impression of how we should all treat each other humans a little bit better
Oh please let there bea season 2. This has been the series I've been waiting for, Colin, you've done a great job, what a nice guy and very generous with your time and comments to the interviewer.
I WANT MORE EPISODES!! It is wonderful entertainment. More please.
Most unexpected twist from any show i’ve ever seen. Can’t wait for season 2!
Fantastic show. I didn’t even see any promo for it, just started watching it when I saw it come up on Apple TV.
I really enjoyed this interview - it's nice to see an actor take questions seriously and give thoughtful responses. Nicely done, Mr. Farrell.
FWIW, I'm enjoying this series and would be up for another season.
Ep 6 was mind blowing 🤯 Loved every second of every episode. Please 2nd. Series asap. Thank you. 🙏
I love how they didn’t give almost any hint at all this would happen and didn’t even touch on it till episode 6
Really great show and Colin is amazing in the role
Gosh I envy your interview and being called 'love' don't worry!! GREAT WORK, the interview did answer my question of 2 series and booooo hooo no it will not happen. Incredible work as he was perfect for the part so perfect he could be this man/alien in Real life! Like you I do watch too much TV have spread sheets on all kinds of categories... Im retired. But I had no clue he could be an alien till the bullet coming at him was PUSHED away!! I watched that scene a few times to make sure that is what happened it blew me away ! Thanks and I subscribed to your channel.
Thank you!
I don't think I'm being hyperbolic when I say that Colin Farrell is the greatest human being to ever walk this planet.
A truly kind person.
Agreed!
He is really lovely.
I seriously hope they develop a season 2.
I feel so out of it. Reading comments on Scene Invaders so many people were picking up clues on Sugar's real identity and all..I mean ALL of this went over my head--no suspicion at all that Sugar is an alien not of the migrant kind. The entire trajectory of the series takes a 180* turn and now I have to speculate how this whole thing is going to go down, I mean did Sugar park an spaceship in a barn and drive the Corvette into town (sounds suspiciously like something Michael J Fox was in but I can't recall the title). Anyway, this is not your typical detective noir series.
Great show - really great!
SECOND SEASON PLEASE COLIN
This is one of the most refreshing TV shows I've watched in ages. I absolutely LOVE the crossover of genres and sincerely hope both genres are retained, and that the noir genre isn't lost to the SciFi element. The crossover element reminds me of Westworld series 1 which was the very best TV ever.
I loved this show! Truly 🙏 there is a second season. Colin Farrell really adds sensitivity and humility to this role. He isa fine actor.🥰❤️
I knew something was different about his character, but as time went on I thought it was something more along the lines of him MAYBE being some kind of super soldier or something. What they revealed genuinely suprised me big time. How they handle it from now on will be VERY interesting to me, because it was such a huge swing which really changes everyone's perpective on the character and the show.
I liked the twist. It's different for the genre.
He's literally one of the men in black.
Agree 100% I love that it was such a surprise for me. I had to go back and watch all the previous episodes to pick up all those bread crumbs that I missed.
I love film noir more than any genre and it seems like the best noir series do not last- maybe because they cost so much to do right. I dearly hope this show gets more seasons because it's amazing and Farrell has never been better.
did NOT expect that
Love the show.
You can not wrap it all up in 2 more episodes . . . Aliens! WTF? Didn't see that coming.
Excelente ator, muito versátil e verdadeiro, essa série é magnífica, amei . Parabéns sucesso sempre ❤
I absolutely enjoyed this show. The story is gripping and I have never met sugar in any of Colin films .
Best show of 2024
Good interview. Good questions.
Thank you!
It's like I feel really sad for anyone who hasn't been watching this show from the start. Hoping for another twist like this somewhere down the line.
the series could turn very dark very quickly. imagine the human traffickers are or were necessary for the aliens. maybe the aliens needed a human for transformation or they need humans to create more of that elixier thingy they need. im pretty sure at this point that the alien society is invested in that human trafficking stuff and that would make them very sinister.
Anyone who drives a Corvette in LA is obviously an alien 👽
I like the show very much, more from this! I love the film noir style, it can be more "darker" for me!!!
I am liking Apple TV! So good to have cool sci-fi shows.
A spectacular and attractive series with the popular superstar Colin Farrell becomes more attractive and spectacular ❤❤🔥❤❤
I loved every second of the episodes, Colin Farrell killed it. I would love to see season 2 for sure!!
He is the hottest actor alive🥹❤️
i actually guessed it around episode 2 or 3 😁
0:37 - that's kind of bad. There should have been a paved road ahead, with clues on the way. Without them & the alien stuff that didn't change anything, it was less than it might've been.
I knew Ruby was going to turn on John and that David wasn't dead. The show has been just great and I really hope there's another season.
It's nice there's at least one streamer interested in developing new, quality content-- rather than the model being employed by so many others that produce as much spaghetti as they can to see what sticks to the wall, and then cancel almost everything after a season or two no matter the quality, just so they can advertise a ton of content, none of which they are actually nurturing or supporting.
Gone are the days when Netflix would actually support and stand behind their shows like they did during the first several seasons of Orange is the New Black. Now it's all about numbers and $ with NO consideration towards content or customer satisfaction. Happy to see how much good stuff is coming out on Apple+ right now.
Apple are the best
He said he has to integrate space a little longer
I really don't know what kind of drug you injected into your neck at the end of the episode, but leave it because you look better this way. 😂
I’m pretty sure the whole world is gonna go bat shit crazy
I’m way too jealous rn liss
I hope this does keep going. There's too much of a meat grinder now, shows not given time to develop.
I don’t know tone I’d tell you if I know
Nice earrings bono
He’s angry rn
Wolverine
Am I jealous? I mean I don’t like some of my dads past choices but so what
Bruce Willis
Ryan Reynolds
The twist was the worst thing I’ve ever seen
Just say it old man your terrified of losing her to younger men
Killed the show terrible twist....was getting good i already seen resident alien😂😂 dont want to watch a spin off
horrible interview questions.
