I personally prefer a desperate Joe Chill rather than a criminal mastermind Joe Chill. Its the kind of meaningless and random tragedy that created Batman, and it is something he obsesses over, that he can't let go or truly stop. And it's the perfect punchline to a nihilist like The Joker.
darkservantofheaven EXACTLY! This guy gets it.
darkservantofheaven Yes I really enjoy batman's origin being more simple than ALMOST EVERY SINGLE OTHER COMIC ORIGIN
Don't you mean The Joker ;)
+darkservantofheaven I think either way, he's still fueled by the senseless conspiracies and corruption in Gotham. But yeah, a desperate Chill is a little better
+darkservantofheaven it makes the deaths become more symbolic and meaningful.
I really like the idea that Chill killed the Waynes not because he wanted to, but because he had to to survive in Gotham. It really hammers home the point that crime is imbedded in the very foundation of the city
+B.J. Stewart
Reminds me of a theory of why Batman doesn't just kill the Joker: Because as Batman sees it, the Joker isn't his true enemy: The city itself is, and Batman secretly fears that Gotham will simply replace the Joker with something worse.
Plus it shows that his villains are just like him
A product of Gotham
He never "had to." Most criminals do not commit murder. He created the chain of circumstances that killed the Waynes. He was responsible for his actions. A real alcoholic would have traded or sold the gun for a bottle, not stolen a necklace it might take days to hock. I prefer the original origin and end of Chill. Also, Batman is haunted by the murders of his parents to this day. It was later said that on Earth One, both Waynes were shot. It was on Earth-Two that Martha Wayne died of a heart attack. Also, Thomas Wayne's mustache is a recent development.
@@RelativelyBest this is actually a really cool theory because it has kinda happened once already. Gotham has countered the creation of Batman (who was far too powerful to handle by regular Mobsters) by creating supervillains so if Batman escalated even more by killing those supervillains it's entirely possible that even more messed up supervillains would rise and escalate the battle until Gotham finally destroys itself by this one guy that actually manages to entirely blow it up

My favorite version of Joe Chill is the new 52 version. The crime boss is too cliche and boring, the complex assassination isn't a good reason behind Bruce's main motivation, and while the I like the ambiguity of not knowing the killer and his motivation, it paints the picture that criminals in the main nemesis of Batman. The new 52's Joe Chill is a product of Gotham City, he's an alcoholic, drug addict, and he's mentally ill. The reason he killed Bruce's parents was for money to indulge himself in narcotics and alcohol and he shot them because his mom's scream scared him. This sets a clear picture that Batman and Bruce have to fix Gotham, not only through his cowl, but through charity and other humanitarian projects to improve Gotham.
Agreed and it defines batman much better
+OORheza Y'know, I've never really thought about it like that, but you are totally right! Thanks for this comment!
I definitely agree with you man I love New 52
Gavin Reynolds Me too.
I may not like, the changes the new 52, made. But to me that was definitely a improvement for Batman's origin.
Joe Chill has no Chill

I honestly like not knowing who killed Batman's parents, I've always liked the symbolic faceless face of crime that grips Gotham tight. I feel like with knowing who killed his parents Batman would associate with a more Punisher-style of justice.
The killers name is Joe chill.
you're welcome.
Doomsday Thanks Doomsday lol
+Doomsday yup I have known that since I have heard of batman
I think you mean Batman never knowing and I agree.
Jack Napier KILLED

Joe Chill have Brunette Hair..
Do a video on why Thunderbolt Ross's moustache disappears when he turns into the Red Hulk
yes do that. Lol
Ben Dick lol
you know I've been reading the Thunderbolts comics for awhile now and never have I ever questioned that. you've opened my eyes
My theory is that all the body hair turns into the regular hair because it's a giant head
Matthew Rondello So the moustache hair unroots itself from his upper lip, moves up to his head, re-reoots itself there, and then moves back down to the lip when he de-hulks?
I like the idea that Bruce thinks that Joe Chill is part of a conspiracy, when the truth is that it was an unplanned mugging. Implications of other characters being involved perhaps show more about Bruce's state of mind than the actual state of events.
Crime Alley is Park Row's nickname, since a lot of crime happens their
*there
I was gonna say that too
As I understand it, it actually gained the nickname because of the Wayne murders, it's only later that the area devolves into the crime-ridden area we know now

+NerdSync didn't the joker kill joe chill in endgame?
ben gates I have a terrible memory, so I'm the wrong person to ask.
I like it when he finds Joe Chill thinking he'll find a huge conspiracy only to find a sad poor guy who was only trying to get some cash
Sad poor guy? He is a murderer, responsible for his addictions and his crimes. I prefer Chill as a hardened street criminal. That is what Batman fights. I don't care what's trendy today. I don't need a conspiracy, but no pity or mercy for Chill.
@@rimshot2270 you seem so annoyed by this lmao
@@bigjill7205 I am. I prefer the original, well-written, and noirish version of Chill's end published in 1948. It presented him as the cold-blooded gangster killer he was. The only change I liked was a later story that revealed he had been hired to kill the Waynes. It believably explained why Bruce was not killed too. Drunks do not kill to get money for their "needs," drug addicts do. Chill would have just sold or traded his revolver to get a bottle. It would have been far quicker than trying to fence a pearl necklace. I do not like stories that make criminals out to be "victims of circumstances or society." I spent 32 years in law enforcement and know better.
@@rimshot2270 i like the new one better
NO, NO, NO. Batman understands that his parents death is so essential for him to save Gotham so when given a Time travel chance he killed his own parents to kickstart his origin . But the fact that HE killed his very own parents drives him CRAZY. And what I just said is the origin story of The JOKER!!!! He comes back to present only a little early and he doesn't like the batman or Gotham cause he just had enough and is so tired of helping the city that he finally hates it and vows to destroy it. Joker explains this to batman that both their origin is the death of Waynes. And batman is both the killer and the victim. Joker IS the Batman.
best comment ever
I sincerely wish that was true, it explains so much.
Sadly, the killer isn't Bruce, it's Joe Chill.
Cool story bro lol
Batman would never kill his own parents, let them die? Perhaps, but killing them? Never.
I love your enthusiasm about the villains crate

What about the court of the Owls story line I don't want to say it hopefully u already know it I don't want to spoil it for people
thats what I thought
Refresh my memory on this, because as far as I can tell the New 52 still recognizes Joe Chill as the killer in a few instances. Most recently when Batman asked the Mobius Chair in JL #42 and it confirmed Chill as the killer.
Maybe the court of owls hired him or something
Hopefully I don't spoiler it but basically Thomas and his wife would not join the court he found out and because of them not joining and being the Richest people in Gotham they sent there mercenaries after them and they had the evidence planned to look like joe chill did it and not them, I pretty sure that's right I haven't red it for a long time but it is my fav batman arc so I should be pretty close
Themaninthedark Well, Batman asked the Mobius Chair in JL 42 recently who killed his parents, and it told him it was Joe Chill. So that seems confirmed enough to me.
I personally like the idea of a faceless killer best. Making a big conspiracy out of the murder makes the idea of Batman going vigilante on ALL CRIME less fundamental.
Batman isn't acting out a personal revenge on A murderer, he's waging war on CRIME... And unlike Bush, I'm sure Batman can win a war on a noun...
I don't. If Batman can bring down criminal masterminds, he can nail a common street thug. Batman stands for justice, and justice demands the killer pay.
@@rimshot2270 Well, agree to disagree... :)

I like the thought of both scenarios but I prefer the Joe Chill one over the Joker killing them. With Joe Chill, it's just some random ass guy that killed them, no big conspiracy, no hidden plot, just an unfortunate accident much to the dismay of Bruce who thought his parent's deaths were important and meant something bigger. That scene you showed looked amazing and I want to read that story. With the Joker shooting them, it's awesome that they accidentally created their biggest enemies but it seems like it is like some grander scheme, a twist of fate, was meant to happen and Batman was destined to become Batman and while that is interesting, I find it more interesting that it was just bad luck on his part. I also like what someone else in the comment added, that a petty criminal killing them would teach Batman not to ignore the minor crimes and simply stick to bigger ones because once he learns that it was just a random mugging, is he really not going to care when another family is about to get mugged?
Accident? He went up to a decent family doing nothing wrong with a gun to rob them. He deliberately shot the mother and father. He was scared? Too bloody bad! If he was so easily spooked, he shouldn't have been robbing them in the first place. It was no random accident. It was murder!
I like a little bit of it both being unsolved and Joe Chill being the murderer. I remember one story where Cill pieces together that Bruce Wayne is Batman and is convinced that Batman will eventually come to get revenge. Later Chill is hanging from a ledge and Batman offers his help but Chill, panicking, lets go and falls to his death. Batman is left to wonder who he was and why was he so afraid of him that he'd reject his help.

I just want to give you a big thumbs up Scott. I've been watching and listening to nerdsync for a long time and these videos just keep getting better.
Great video as always Scott!
No doubt Joe Chill killed Bruce Wayne's parents, but who pulled the strings. The Joker? Blasphemy! It was obviously the mastermind that created all the superheros, Mopey, the Heavenly Helpmate. That handsome, magic wielding devil is the reason the Justice League even exists. That underappreciated Heavenly Helpmate deserves his own comic book.
I, for one, think Joe Chill as the random, cowardly, drunk mugger is the best way to go. It really adds an element of cruel irony to the murders of the Waynes. Enforces and idea of actions and consequences. It's weird to think that there wasn't some grand conspiracy or destiny for Batman; it just kinda happened. Bruce Wayne forged his own path.
Anyhow, wuw ya Scotty, you handsome devil
I have always loved the chill and moxon stories cause bill finger is such a great writer. The scene when they talk about the eyes and the whole first batman Thomas's ghost thing with moxon is incredibly striking.
another great episode!!
Bruce HAS to know the killer of his parents. The world's greatest detective not figuring out who killed his own parents would make no sense at all. I do personally prefer the Joker involvement just because the dynamic between them is so epic but the real Joe Chill origin works perfectly fine.
Can't solve a case if the evidence is gone.
I like as an audience knowing it was Joe Chill. But it's better Bruce doesn't.
+S Clair Gotcha. Yeah, that makes sense.
Very interesting, great video
I really like Joe Chill doing it, especially since then you can have moments like when he meets him. My favorite being in the Brave and the Bold cartoon where the Phantom Stranger had to stop Batman because he was going rage-mode in Chill.
Anyway great video.
I like the original story of Joe Chill with the other goons killing him. The show Batman: the Brave and the Bold used this story ark and is generally considered the best and darkest episode in the series.
Batman: Mayonaka no doa tadaki
omg thank you! loved this
In the early 80's i had a Batman story in which he confronts Joe Chill in a Batman like suit that Thomas Wayne had worn at a party. That was a great episode.
I learned that Hugo Strange (aka "the philosopher") ordered a man named matches Malone to kill the waynes
Matches is a nickname Bruce had..
I like the idea that the death of his parents are just due to common thugs without any conspiracy involved. Makes it more realistic and relatable...
+Big Bowss Yeah, very relatable. Same thing happened to my parents. They killed some kid's parents outside of a theater.
***** Lol I meant crimes are usually due to common criminals, not big mafia conspiracy or whatever...
Big Bowss The death of Batman's parents as a result of a conspiracy destroys everything about the character, especially his relationship with Joker (well, not really everything, but you get the idea). Also, it was pretty much established that it wasn't a conspiracy.
But don't make Chill a pitiable drunk/addict. i prefer him as a hardened street thug and stick-up man.
One thing I always thought was cool about Batman 89 was that with Jack killing they Waynes meant that he created Batman and then later Batman knocked him into the chemical vat creating the Joker. I've always liked that. Plus when you add in the line from The Dark Knight (I know, different continuity) that Joker says to Batman "I think you and I will be doomed to do this forever." It creates that infinite loop those two have together. It's nice poetry really.
Crazy video.... I love it!
We all know Joaquin phoenix killed Thomas and Martha..
Keep it Joe Chill. The name itself is cool (no pun intended. Well, maybe slight intention).
I love these videos so much
Another great episode, I love the version of Joe Chill in Smallville season 11 :)
At 4:09 there is a picture of Chill in a jacket. That jacket has a dragon on its back, a dragon similar to yakuza (Japanese mafia, basically) back tattoos. A hint at Chill's employers?
Pickletine el Taimados the yakuza do their work in japan. they're's no reason they're gonna send a assasin all the way to america.
what about that story where batman got teleported in the past seeing his young self and his parents... then he realized that it was the time where his parents were about to get shot so looked for the mugger, but there was no mugger. he then realized that the person who killed his parents, was the future him. and so he had to make the most difficult choice; whether to leave the family be or kill the boy's parents so that batman may be born...
this story sounds TERRIBLE.
+Chinomso Okafor absolutely
You do realize that you wrote a story where Batman himself had no logical reason to exist _even with_ weird time shit being involved, right? After all, when Harry Potter did it he _wanted_ to save himself in the first place, but Batman has literally no reason to have ever been Batman if _he_ was the one who had to kill his parents.

Joe Chill has no chill....
Actually, I rather like the case to be unsolved. This idea that Batman is not fighting for vengeance, but fighting so that others won't have to suffer what he did at the hands of the violent everyman just makes for a better character to me.
+Braden Chittick It's an interesting little twist.
truly great video and I'll be subscribing to loot crate for the low price and what you get. Thanks for turning us on to this great option for gifts and so on
+Brian Rebmann Fantastic to hear! Thank you!
I like the Joe Chill story line because it shows how one person could have such a great effect. His actions within a few minutes set off the butterfly effect. Am I the only one who calls bull on him shooting because he got startled from Martha's scream?
No, you are not. I was in law enforcement for 32 years. I heard that "I was scared" BS excuse a hundred times. Do they think their victims weren't scared? The killer was the one with the weapon. They're just offering lame excuses to try to save their useless hides.
I have always liked the idea that he doesn't know who killed his parents. That Batman is fighting a never ending battle to find the one guy who killed his parents, but will never really know.
but he isn't really fighting to find out who killed his parents
he fights to protect gotham city from the type of evil that killed his parents, so that other people's loved ones won't have to go through the same pain he did.
He's the world's greatest detective. He figured out by Year Two of his vigilante career.
I came up with this when I was a kid and I just really liked it as a driving force for the character. Where he has managed to refocus this desire for vengeance into a desire to protect and save people. These were just my headcannon from when I was very young and I first started to think critically about the character.
+batlantern That's certainly a valid take on how Batman operates. Myself, I prefer to think that Bruce's parents' deaths was a tragedy (obviously), but more than anything it opened his eyes to the fragility of human life. As such, it's not even really about his parents' deaths any longer; if his parents were to turn up alive through some contrivance, I don't think it would impact his mission at all because their deaths are no longer the point. Bruce / Batman also operates to combat other hazards than crime -- poverty for example, and there have been plenty of times Batman has rescued people from fires and other accidents. So to me, it's not about vengeance, it's about suffering and mortality.
Coincidentally enough, the legend of Buddha is that he was a prince named Siddhartha whose father made sure he never had any awareness of human suffering and death, but when he learned of such things, he strove to find a way to defeat them. Siddhartha became an ascetic, while Bruce Wayne made a bat costume and learned to kick almighty ass. Who had the better idea? I sure know whose comics I want to read.
I prefer Joe Chill. If it had been Joker, he'd be old as fuck...
Scott makes my day
That thumbnail is so pure and innocent. Now I kinda wanna see that moment
where is it from
The Ghost of Christmas Past took adult BATMAN Bruce Wayne back in time and gave him the choice of murdering his own parents to create BATMAN or do nothing allowing little Bruce to live a well adjusted life, but great tragedy would befall Gotham and the entire Earth without BATMAN. Bruce decides to kill his own parents because BATMAN is the hero Gotham needs.
There. That is my stupid fanfic. Fanfic which is just as legitimate as the 90% shitty stories that comic book companies churn out nowadays minus a piece of paper they have saying they own the rights to someone else's grandpa's ideas.
+donfolstar That aspect is explored in Blind Justice, when Bruce keeps dreaming of killing his parents. Batman needed his parents to die in order to exist. It was a very dark story made to coincide with Detective Comics 600.
Mario Morales So what you're saying is that my stupid little fanfic is not just as legitimate, it is actually more legitimate because similar story lines and A Christmas Carol > dreams.
What? I'm pointing out a story where a similar theme was explored, in case it interested you. I don't know where you get this legitimacy thing or how it's a stupid fanfic

I say it makes it more interesting to say that the Joker is responsible for the deaths of the Waynes. Mostly because I love the irony of him creating batman , created the joker.
Not to mention, it would fit allot better in the separate reality where Bruce dies and Martha becomes Joker and Thomas becomes batman, Which would state there must always be a Batman and Joker to balance the forces of Good and Evil.
I read an early 'Brave and the Bold' when I was a child, in which Batman and Deadman tracked down Max Chill, Joe's Brother. It was my first exposure to the Chill brothers. I seem to remember that it was Max that killed Boston Brand and helped create Deadman

I really liked that "Batman:Year 2" story where Batman went undercover into the crime world and worked alongside Joe Chill, with Bruce brandishing the very gun Chill used to kill Bruce's parents. The irony was painful.
I like the idea that he realized ho mundane his parents' death. It gives him a resolve to not ignore the most insignificant of crimes. He patrols not only for the big guns like Penguin but would tirelessly look for the muggers and thieves. He would understand that bad things happens for no reason due to the lawless environment and thus often personifies crime as a chaotic cloud over Gotham City
Please do a comic misconceptions vid for How Deathstroke lost his right eye! It's get's changed in every show he's in.
Ii go with Joe Chill. And my favorite version is the animated "Batman- The Brave and The Bold" episode, "In the Chill of the Night"
I like it best when the killer remains anonymous. I feel like that adds more motivation and depth to Batman since in a sense he's fighting crime hoping one day he catches his parents' murderer.
is that a bendable superman figure in the background?? cool videos!
so we know who the killed batman's parents I loved the video it was great I give you guys a thumbs up : )
Scott you should do a video on mythology in comics! Marvel seems to lean toward Norse tradition, while DC follows Greek.
Scot...first time writing. First let me say Love your videos!!!!
I watch a few others but yours is my favorite...love your humor and style!
Okay...I totally 100% agree that Joe Chill is the "official killer" of the Waynes! No arguement from me!
I am just surprised you didn't mention Lew Moxon from Detective comics #235 Sept. 56!
(Of course you may have mentioned it in your reference to Chill being a hitman for the mob in other stories.)
Anyway I know Moxon didn't actually kill the Waynes...but according to "The First Batman" story referenced above he did hire Chill to act as a holdup man in order to kill the Waynes thus making him indirectly responsible for their deaths.
But I hold it is Chill -and I like the idea of Batman never solving the case thus this being the motivation for his war on crime as every criminal becomes the one who has "killed his parents" and thus he is always looking for him in every criminal he fights.
Your videos rock man!!!
