    • @josephdover198
      @josephdover198 Před 3 měsíci +7

I can understand the desire to modify it but personally even if I had Brian Shaw's money I wouldn't. There's no need it has plenty of clearance already. Maybe more of an off road tire when those wear out. I would however want to do something about the front end. Like he said I don't like the look. Maybe get rid of it being two tone color scheme and go all white with a front bumper/winch that's flat black. When you start to do too many modifications you compromise the truck's longevity. The reason the 7.3 Ford diesel is so bulletproof is because it's underpowered from the factory. You can easily push way over twice the factory horsepower but now it's no longer a bulletproof motor. You just cut it's life in half or worse. Extreme lifts and much bigger tires? Okay cool now your truck drives like absolute shit. You're relegated to buying a new dually diesel and a trailer to drag this thing to some off roading site. If that's what you want to do go ahead but don't expect to not hate how it drives on the road. Just my first hand knowledge opinion. At 38 I've known plenty of people with ridiculous lifts and tires on trucks, SUV's and Jeeps and every single one of them drove like a log. My 2010 Tacoma is lifted on 33's and even that compromised how it drove a great deal compared to the factory 31's. Driving Jeep Wranglers on 35's is a nightmare.

Someone needs to step up and help with the transmission as well. I used to own an 02 f350 and one of the biggest complaints I had was how loose/sluggish it felt. Those excursions are even heavier so I'm sure it doesn't feel like a sports car. Appropriately sized turbo and injector combo really helps but the real issue is that 4 speed. Either a allison swap or maybe a 5r110? Either option would be an amazing upgrade. I currently own a 4 door 2006 lbz duramax and I gotta say, the transmission is amazing. Makes towing feel effortless and smooth. It's light years ahead of that old 4 speed

      @BigPawTivald Před 2 měsíci

@@yepitsme2536 5r110 would be a great swap. The 4R100 are bullet proof though and were rated at 1200ft/lbs from the get-go. The wiring ford did was comical though. The 3rd tail light (On the cab) was wired into the transmission, so if the light had a short, it would cause issues in the tranny. Another thing is they are super picky about alternators/voltage regulators. I had the same issue, hard shifts or early shifts in my early 99, went to a mean green 220amp and it solved all my issues.

Great truck. Lucky new owner. The 4R100 transmission will last only 160,000 miles unless you Loctite the three pedestal bolts for the hydraulic pump in the transmission. Bolts are above the valve body. The transmission power shaft will eventually vibrate the bolts loose, then hydraulic oil will leak and line pressure will fail, then clutches will spin, then transmission will overheat and burn the fluid and destroy the clutch plates. I know because two of my 4R100s did that and had to visit BTS for their 1000HP transmission rebuild. Great shop for that work. The 7.3PS is 50% detuned by Ford to not destroy the transmission. But leaving the 7.3PS detuned will allow the engine to be a million mile engine just like the BTS million mile transmission.
Had a bad torque converter rattling from the factory. Dealer never said anything was wrong. But even the receptionist at BTS recognized the bad converter rattle as soon as I drove up. Shameful Ford dealer not saying anything or fixing it under warranty.
Noticed there is a coolant filter to catch the casting sand from the factory. At 70,000 miles that problem should have cleared. Be sure to run the ELC Coolant to protect for engine killing cavitation.
Since it doesn't have a catalytic converter, run extra zinc additive to protect bearing wear surfaces, especially the camshaft since EPA has been deleting zinc additive to protect catalytic converters while destroying the engines.
The diesel trucks had a one size for all gasoline tank for the truck builds. The extra long fuel filler tube one foot emissions air gap for the gasoline tanks is not needed for the diesels. A hack is to pull the filler tub and shorten it to allow an extra three gallons of diesel in the tank which you made need for towing.
Watch out for the top of the left A pillar leaking onto the BCM at the bottom left of the dash by the emergency brake pedal. At least put a rain coat over the BCM until time for a permanent leak solution.
Mechanics say never ever get rid of the 7.3 Powerstroke. New EPA diesels are junk. Don't make the mistake the last guy made and sell that truck.
There may be a corrugated cable bundle rubbing through the aluminum intake air charge pipe. Check it and separate them if rubbing.
Careful of the vacuum operated front 4x4 hubs. There is no drain hole for condensation which will build up and rust out the front wheel bearings. Front end is a lot of weight for rusty bearings. You will notice turn slack and bumping as bearing going out. Get good rubber vacuum hoses to replace the gummy bear hoses Ford provided on the hubs.
When I run Biodiesel in my Powerstroke, people complain about being hungry because exhaust smells like fried chicken. :- ) Yes it is real biodiesel and not raw frying oil which has wax that will damage combustion chamber of a diesel engine. The wax plasticizes into pellets that ping the piston.
Carry extra Ford CPS. If wont start and and no tach movement, the CPS failed. Carry the wrench to replace the CPS in case stranded somewhere.
If the IPV fails a certain way, that truck will launch like a dragster. Very scary when in traffic. It is like the fuel pedal is in monster mode. Smoked the dually tires when it happened.
Nice feature, is that engine wont fire up if engine oil is low. Solves that problem.
    Happy trucking.

Hey Brian, beautiful Excursion there! I have a 2001 7.3 diesel myself. Since I've had mine for the last 2 years, I would say the number 1 must have would definitely be better brakes. I was able to do that easily since mine was already lifted 4 inches, so I added 20"rims to add the bigger brakes so there would not be any clearance issues. This truck has a lot of mass, and with towing and all, it'll definitely be the most important upgrade you can make, especially if you plan on towing with it.

She's mint Brian. Riff Raff Diesel makes some great products for the 7.3. I recommend the 140v IDM mod for easier starts in the winter and some more power. Hotshots Secret stiction eliminator in the oil every other oil change or every oil change (all their products are great, I use FR3 in all my vehicles, front to back.) I would always pour the stiction eliminator right into the oil filter and drain and fill the HPOP with it. I personally use Delo 400 or Rotella t6 for oil with Wix filters or Napa Gold. 5w-30 in the winter, 15w-40 the rest of the year. 100 dollar man used to offer great marine grade glow plugs and glow plug relays. I liked to make my own fuel additive with 2 stoke oil, cetane booster, anti-gel (winter) and some ATF. I've owned (4) 7.3s, I could get them to start on the first glow plug cycle in -30F without being plugged in with the winter. Running the 5w-30, I wouldn't tow too heavy though, keep it in the 10-13k gross weight.

I loved my 2002 7.3L Excursion! I had it for 8 years and also bought mine from a one owner. Kids are grown so it's starting to sit- worst thing for a diesel. I highly recommend the K & N filter and a tuner (Edge- Evolution). They do alot for your fuel economy. Also the fuel modification with the springs in the fuel bowl. I was getting 16/17 mpg (paper and pencil method) with the mods. I also recommend the FS2500 oil bypass filtration. Keeps your oil clean. Your injectors will thank you. Something else I added was the RACOR fuel filtration. Works better than the screens on the sending unit.
Now the only downside- a 20+ year old truck is going to start having failures due to its age. Some parts are no longer available through Ford and you will be reliant on the junkyard for some parts. I totally miss my truck!

It actually makes driving a gasoline engine/manual transmission combo harder because you have to be a lot quicker on and off the clutch pedal compared to the old school diesels with 5 speeds. They make more then enough torque that its actually hard to stall them and you have to shift them much slower. But, those 90s diesels are great. This excursion shares the same 7.3 as your dads 97.

    I own a 2000 Excursion, 4x4 XLT 6.8L, and had a 2003 Ford F350 4X4 XLT 6.8L, if you're unaware, some simple things to keep in mind-
-the stock wheel lockers are known to be finicky, Warn lockers seem to be the way to go
-the rear hatch struts are known to loose their pressure which will cause problems keeping the hatch up, especially in colder weather, some people will actually buy new ones with a few more PSI
-you probably know this one, the body style uses some of the same parts from the F250/F350 Pick ups, this means the lock actuators and widow motors might give out early
-the third row seat, when removed, has a set of plastic wheels on one side for easy moving
-front windshield wipers should be 20", the rear 16"
-please use caution when closing the rear doors, if the hatch is closed before the barn doors, the barn doors may shatter the glass if they are attempted to be shut
-an additional gas tank may make sense if you want 600+ miles per fill up, I normally keep mine at around half full to keep the excess weight to a minimum, I only fill it up completely if I need to drive longer distances
-I would use caution when looking for "universal" parts that work on the F250/350/Ex's as things like a leaf spring for the F series when used on an Ex will add additional 2" to the over hight(example: 5" lift parts on F series will equal a 7" lift on an Ex), also, some parts like fender flairs will not fit properly on the rear as the rear parts will follow the straight design of the F series bed and not tapper upwards to the bumper like on an Ex rear end
-if you are going to replace the front windshield at any point, take care in saving the factory sticker from the plant as the replacement glass will not have it, they are almost like a collectors item
-it's still manly to get a step ladder to /reach/clean the roof
-I bought a wide angled rear view mirror slip over attachment, works like a charm, I recommend thhe one from Broadway, as the other one I tried from Autozone, the tension nubs would not open up far enough
-the Ex's uses Dana 50's, the F250/350's use Dana 60's, same set up, just smaller parts, I'd upgrade if wanting to really hit the trails/haul
-maybe try an 8 foot antenna if you're getting bad radio signal
-if you don't know your door code, depending on the year, their should be it on a sticker somewhere on a part someplace that's tucked just out of the way, it's possible to change it and set it to whatever desired combination as well as set up an additional combination that will only work in a specific way that I can not currently remember (Sorry!)
-I'd get seat covers(leather ones even) to keep the factory ones protected as well as if you're looking to add some custom personality
there are some decent Ex videos on YT that cover some possible common issues if that is of any interest
---That's about as much as can think of, Hope you enjoy your new ride, and drive safe! 😋👍🏻

Brian, I'm a huge fan of yours and Excursions!!!!! I was cheering when I seen this video posted, my best mod ever to mine was a front axle swap, I used an axle from an F450 (must be 2005 and up with coils this is the real Dana super 60 axle) at first with factory coils and then later switched to airbags, rides amazing now and I have huge F450 brakes that blow the stock brakes away (you need to run 20" wheels minimum to clear the brakes). The F450 axle was converted from 10 lug to 8 lug and dually adapters dropped to narrow it and now my tires turn to a full 45+ degrees, only the F450 and F550 axles turn this sharp, its night and day difference to park and stop now. The front axle is wider so to even the track width to the rear I used a dana 80 from 2004 and earlier dually, major rear end upgrade. Please Please keep us updated with the modifications you do!

Helwwig 1.5" bigwig sway bar in front for F450, Detroit true trac diff in front, lots of extra's. On board air with in cab control for bags at all 4 corners, the rear is just overload bags front is 100% air ride. @@MaximusMerideus

purchase a new / updated CPS sensor and keep it in the glove box. 1 10mm bolt to swap out, easily done on the side of the road, and is one pesky bugger that can cause a ton of headache on the 7.3 if you're caught without a spare.
Also get a hydra chip on that sucker if you plan on towing. Same with added RAS rear spring helpers, way better than airbags and i've got them on my excursion.

Obviously it could use some sort of sunroof or skylight. Adding a gps, backup sensor an or backup camera could be nice. Having the engine tuned up to add a performance boost and economy mode would probably be nice. I personally value having a quiet interior when I’m in a vehicle so sound dampening would probably be amazing, just get a better exhaust system if it’s too quiet in there. I like to be able to hear other people talking easily when I drive. I would get the check out different seats and seat fabrics and check out what is the most comfortable for you and whoever you’re carting around, but still easy to clean. I’m not sure if you have a favorite smell or one that makes you relax, but putting an aroma therapy device in there might be nice. Maybe put some removable modular shelving in the back for school, travel, gym equipment or whatever. Having a few of different options for the suspension might be nice, comfort and performance modes.
