Here's the Letterman appearance that we were talking about. It's impossible for me to be in a bad mood while watching this video. Impossible!
czcams.com/video/Cx_l9kLxycw/video.html
I was just about to look this up, so thanks. We sort of took it for granted back then. Now, I long for those better days. edit: dayum, they were tearin' ..it ...to pieces!
They kicked some ass there!
i have a few amps but my fav is my hot rodded deluxe reverb silver face oh man that with my bbe boosta grande its on👍
I'm trying to learn this now but damn. It's magnificent. I've been blasting it since I saw this video of yours, Otis.
Also you must be big into Mojo on the XM. You both address everybody as "friends" albeit in a different way.
Otis, i was smiling through the whole thing, with a whole lot of chuckles for punctuation. Thank you. Love the show.
Marty Stuart and The Fabulous Superlatives are the best band I’ve ever seen. They will tear off the roof of ANY joint!
@@buckhorncortez Good one! 🤣😂
Vaughan is an animal on the guitar
Just watched it again...damn boys that was hot stuff
Yep. Only band I’ve seen that compares might be the Beat Farmers
@@joeywho534 So, how was the show?
I can imagine because I've had the pleasure twice.
I could listen to a Kenny Vaughan tell stories for days. There’s just no negative about it, it’s just fun!
Marty Stuart and Kenny Vaughn are SO great - they're unappreciated American National Music Treasures. Nuff sed.
Folks who know Marty and Kenny and the other Superlative’s work DO appreciate what they do, though.
They’re holding a line that is rapidly deteriorating, which is the last vestiges of true country western music.
I've said, for probably 15 to 20 years, that Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives are, in my opinion, the finest straight-up country music band in the world.
My band Hank Flamingo opened for Marty in Dauphin, Manitoba at a two day weekend festival. We got invited up to sit in with Marty and his band for the last song and played "Whole Lot a Shakin Goin On". They plugged me in to half of that Marty Twin 4 plex he was using at the time. It was forkin loud!!
Kenny Vaughn is an amazing guitar player and tremendous talent. I really enjoy watching him work with Marty Stuart. My favorite Marty Stuart song is “Porter Wagoner’s Grave”. The first time I heard it, it just left me in a pile on the floor. It’s tough for me to choose one favorite Marty Stuart song because I have really so many, but this one just tore my heart out. Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives are the best band in Country Music in my opinion. It’s a real shame that they are not played on country radio stations.
I agree. Great band. I've seen them in person, from an up-close seat. Amazing talent. They don't get played on country radio because they ARE COUNTRY. That pretty much excludes them from so-called country radio (which I never listen to anymore). I have a great library of classic country music, and it's on thumb drives for my car too.
Well it's not so bad radio stations we grew up with are on the internet with CZcams tunes etc. I can't remember the last time I listened to music on the over the air radio 🎉
Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives at FOX Theater Bakersfield CA back in 2023 25 OCT. !!! That was a great night, and incredible show. Anyone else witness That ?? I can't wait to see them again. :)
Otis,Its Always Cool ta Listen to Kenny,on your Show and Others as well,to Experience, like I was there,as I listen about the Cool Past that's Always Still, present in those stories.Take care, nah!Jcs
Kenny Vaughn is a monster guitar player. Playing harmony with Marty note for note. Shazam
"2 little Fender amps our guitars and a tuner".....the simplicity and brilliance in 1 comment.
Kenny Vaughn’s playing speaks for itself, always superlative. Besides Kenny’s great playing, he is one of the most humble, kindest individuals that you will ever meet.
There's the public television show about country music. I don't believe it would have been any good at all without Marty Stuart . His repertoire of songs is earth shaking. He actually would reminisce about songs in that documentary and sing it out or play and be spot on. Wow. He is unbelievable and we are blessed to have his presence in music of all genres. His best song? Whatever Marty feels like playing at any given moment.
I bless your generosity, my highest gratitude and appreciation for all the love and support you have been showing me and my music, am so grateful. God bless you! 🙏🎸🎙
I remember hearing his interpretation of "Running Down the Dream" one night, while watching his show. I was speechless. I just kept rewinding and listening over and over. Marty is awesome. A true treasure to music!
Never even listened to a Marty Stewart song (knowingly). But that was a great story. Letterman show had so many great musicians perform. Thanks for making this video.
Just found you today, Otis. Thanks for the video, and the love.
Kenny is such a cool dude and a truly spectacular musician. That performance was killer !!
That performance is a classic. Somewhat unrelated, Way Out West is amazing, the entire album, and Kenny's tone on his Glaser Bender demo vid on the metalflake Tele...also wow.
I had met Marty Stuart at Merlefest in 2007, and among all the other exceptional musicians there he was by far the friendliest and most personable artist. He was happy to take the time to meet and talk with people, take photos, etc. it really made an impression on me. These guys are just doing what they do and having a good time on the way!
I first met Marty when I was 10 at a Lester Flatt & Nashville Grass w/Osborne Brothers(Sonny & Bobby) in 1974. Next time seen him and shook his hand he was with Cindy Cash and played in Johnny Cash's Band. Been a friend since. I even got to be in the Audience Tapings of his RFD-TV Show. There is no better person besides a Musician/Entertainer than Marty Stuart. He's such a decent human being.
These stories are the best
Time Waits for No One. Amazing that Kenny saw The Dead with Pigpen, and Jimi and Clapton live. His memoir will be amazing too.
Cool stories, Otis. Hearing a guitarist like Kenny talk shop is a privilege. He and Marty and the other two band members are indeed under-appreciated, but those who do know, know. I saw them in June ‘22 in Brown County, Indiana. Also, saw them open for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit in Cincinnati in late 2021. And I saw them backing Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman on the Byrds’ Sweetheart of the Rodeo 50th anniversary tour at the Ryman. I would go see them once a week if I could.
I saw Marty Stuart on Austin City Limits with his band and was blown away. Really, really good players and songs. Bought a few of his Albums after that. Toss up between King of Dixie and High on a Mountain Top as my favorites.
KENNY!!! I love listening to Kenny. Love you guys!
Kenny is one of my favorite guests Otis
Thank goodness for Marty Stewart. He is a truly a musician’s musician. Ya gotta love his expertise and experience.
Wait until you hear Marty Stuart, he's even better!
I really like the idea of Marty Stuart putting his own amp chassis back in its cab, on tour. Awesome story
I only came across this guy a few days ago and he has already changed the way I play guitar. I'm really glad I caught him while he's still going.
I've replayed that Letterman gig many times. They were so ON! It was so tight and self-assured to the last chord.
Best band musicianship-wise and best band showmanship-wise. They are simply the best band to see live. Amazing that Kenny Vaughn could refer to himself as “the lowly guitar player.” He’s a god!
A little bit of irony.
And, Marty Stewart has the best hair since Glen Campbell!
And Marty's chops ain't too shabby either.
No argument about "best band touring" from me. I've NEVER seen a tighter show.
FWIW, Kenny said recently that Scruggs is a better guitar player. Hard to believe.
@@joshuafuller9898 I saw that too, but I've heard Marty call KV the best guitar player in the world while Scruggs was next to him on stage. I have no doubt Scruggs is great, but I don't really think it gets any better than Kenny. There are others on his level, but that's about it.
I first saw Kenny Vaughan play on RFD-TV's airings of the The Marty Stuart Show. I was blown away by "Cousin Kenny" and his musicianship. Fabulous Superlative is the right name! Thanks for the interview!
It seems I remember when they had Willie Nelson on, Leroy Troy dropped his hillbilly comic persona and played it straight
me too!
👍🏼 Yes Sir,,,that is a Toe tapper. From out of town,,gonna let my hair down🎸✌🏼 Marty and those Glam Suits, always reminded me of Porter Wagner. No Complaints🎸
Marty and Kenny are the most uplifting and inspiring players imaginable.
Fortunately we don't have to.
We don't need no stinkin' pedals, Judge.
Kenny is such an awesome interview, and guitar player.
Well Otis... never heard of Kenny or Marty until today and I'm 56 from the UK (so Bluegrass not so popular) but deeeyamn... that was some outstanding guitar playing from the top shelf. Love your music and thanks for introducing other great musicians and bands to folks across the world 😎😎👍👍
Can’t get enough of this guy. That letterman appearance still gives me goosebumps. Total class, total fun, total showmen.
Country Boy Rock & Roll, Kenny's guitar work on that one is superlative indeed.
I watch the Letterman performance every so often because it's perfection and pure quality. Harry Stinson rocks the drums and Paul Martin plays all of the right stuff.
Round 1990 I was mixing monitors at a fair in S Florida, Kenny was with Sweethearts Of The Rodeo. His guitar cut out a few times he looked over and I ran out pushed in plugs in his pedal, sound came back! I ran back to my board, his guitar cut out again, I went out on stage, held that input cable into his pedal until the song ended and he removed it from chain. For this guy who had stage freight x100 it was a memorable moment for me. We were both young in our careers, so glad to see his done well, and I love his work with Marty.
The first time I saw Marty Stuart he was playing mandolin with John Prine and Philip Donnelly was playing lead. I could not believe what a great talent Stuart was and how the camera loved him. There were only the three of them that night, I was also greatly impressed by Phillip Donnelly, he passed away in 2019. I am going to guess it was in maybe 1979 or so, of course Stuart had been performing professionally since he was about 13 or so but it was the first time I saw him. I worked a show as the electrician where he was there with Travis Tritt, Tracy Lawrence and George Jones, that would have been 94 or 95. Stuart came on stage and I kept watching him, he has that charisma. I cannot remember the first time I noticed Kenny Vaughan but as soon as he did one of the riffs I knew he was someone special. I sort of remember when it was but I can't remember who he was with, not that he pushed anyone out of the way it was just, wow that guy is some great guitarist.
@RE Gunter Philip Donnelly was great. Sad loss. Great to hear Kenny talk. Nothing like a Princeton reverb. Good ol country music. I like his last album Way out West. That song’s good. He always reminds me a bit of Johnny Cash. Thanks Otis.
First time I saw Marty was at the Choctaw Indian Fair and he was playing with Lester Flatt and we think it was 1974. (Maybe 1975, some dispute with my Mother on that one)
Kenny along with Dave Roe and Maxwell Schauf played on my first self-produced project in Nashville back in 2001 or so. He was a nice guy. We cut all the tracks in one day. Kenny used my Martin HD-28 for some rhythm tracks (and complimented me on it). And he did some quick solo work on one song that I still love to listen to. I always thought it would be a great Opry number….if I ever got invited. (I didn’t.) Really enjoyed this, Otis.
Anything Marty and Band plays, is my Favorite
Marty - and Steve Earle - are why I wanted to live in Nashville. I've loved him since Busy Bee Cafe. He only gets better. Treasures, indeed.
Love Kenny Vaughn !
Thanks Otis I love Marty and the Superlatives Especially cousin Kenny! It's just too hard for me to pick favorite songs. Thanks again
_yyý%$$f nikki
Never forget the day Marty had Kenny launch into Pipeline at the Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival as their final encore after shouts from the audience requesting it. As usual, Kenny was awesome! Great show by Marty and the band.
i love everything Marty and the gang does, got to meet them in Bakersfield at Bucks Place they all signed my old guitar.
I saw the Marty Party!in the day, with Tracy Lawrence, and the one and only double tough Chris Ledoux! I saw Chris three times, even towards the end,and he never disappointed, and Marty is simply a Legend.Tempted,is one of my favorites by my man Marty.
One good thing about these days is before your video was over I opened another window and found the Letterman clip. Holy Shit, that was smokin'!
Just ordered a couple Marty Stuart/Superlatives albums.
I saw Marty Stuart with Kenny Vaughan open up for Chris Stapleton in 2018. His backing band was superb. Great show! 🎵
Lives in my hometown. Marty. Loves to shop at Publix. Dresses to the nines. Always nice.
Marty Stuart is an amazing wealth of information about country music. He knows so many stories it is always a pleasure to listen to him share stories.
Marty is Royalty!!!!!!!!
The gentleman talking here is Kenny Vaughan he plays in Marty Stuart's band The Fabulous Superlatives.
Kenny is such a low key self effaciing guy.
Otis is great too.
Once a year I repost that song on Facebook just to remind people how great that performance was. I agree it's in the top 5 of Letterman's musical performances. They just casually tear down the joint with smiles on their faces and lavender western clothes.
I know this feeling. And Kenny is a reliable witness. Like him right off.
This is why they're my favorite country band working right now.
Favorite Marty song , the one I am listening to at the time, they are all great.
Love it! Marty was my guy back in high school and just keeps getting better. High On A Mountain Top easily my favorite. Marty is the ultimate purveyor of Epic Country music.
"Road Hot" I know exactly what that means. 😂
You know when Kenny Vaughn tells you someone ( Don Reno ) is a monster guitar player ,,
you might want to give Reno and Smiley a listen.
Great video, love to hear this man talk about his career
I’ve seen Marty live and it’s a pleasure to see a Telecaster straight into an amp and played with skill and grace. It’s about touch.
yesss
Check out Roy Buchanan. He would use the tone control on his Telecaster to simulate a wah pedal and the volume control to simulate a volume pedal. To get some overdrive without murdering the audience he would point his Fender Twin to face the back of the stage.
@@pedrobrando4606 roy was incredible doin things wayyyyyy before anyone else was
@@pedrobrando4606 Roy mostly used a Vibrolux.
Okay I've already heard Kenny talk about 4 hours so I'll just have to wait and listen to him again in the morning...😎
Marty, Kenny, and the rest of the superlatives are the very best. I've seen them all .Well almost all. They eat ,sleep , music. Great guys and absolutely fantastic musicians.
Marty Stuart is on my Mount Rushmore of Telecaster players ..... It's all about tone baby, it's all about tone
Kenny is a master and true superlative. Marty has the best musicians and all of them are extraordinary
Fantastic. I'm a backline guy for most of my adult life (20 years at SIR in Miami and an bit in NY too), so it was really really cool for me to hear the chat about the amps! and I love the "where are the pedals?" part. So awesome. Also cool about the SIR LA amp Marty had to have. Big fan of Marty and Kenny!! And who knew Kenny was a Pig Pen era Deadhead? Wicked cool!!
And saw Howlin' Wolf when he was 14?
I had no idea he was a Dead guy. Makes me like him even more. I saw him and Marty a few months ago and those guys don't need pedals.
Thank you Mr. Otis sir for doing these! I look forward to each and every one. I first saw Marty and the Superlatives in Charlotte in I want to say ‘09. At that time they were sometimes doing full electric or full acoustic shows, I’d paid extra for the ‘gold circle’ seats- front and center in front of Marty, and was initially disappointed when I got to my seat and a mandolin and a few Martin’s in front of Harry’s kit (no Clarence). They got 3 tunes in and I realized Kenny didn’t need a telecaster and a Princeton and Marty didn’t need Clarence. What Kenny played on his Martin was every bit as rockin/jazzin/country’n as anything I’d ever seen or heard. Been blessed to see them multiple times since. Most recently with Kenny on his B-Paisley with Glaser bender and Marty playing Clarence. They are IMO simply the best band in America. I excitedly waited for Way Out West to drop in I think, March of 2017 and I literally listened to nothing else for the next 18 months. Please put up some more cousin Kenny interviews!!!
How can I NOT say that this is my favorite Marty Stuart (AHFS) song? In fact, I think that this is now my favorite song in the world. Letterman had some cool musical guests and was obviously well acquainted with their virtuosity. I always appreciated that about his run.
Nice. Kenny is definitely one of my big guitar heroes. I got to meet him when he played in Winston Salem, NC a few years ago. We had a great conversation. Unpretentious indeed.
Awesome guitarist that plays with an Awesome guitarist. The drums and bass/steel pedal are awesome as well. As for favorites, Kenny Vaughan "Hot like that" Marty Stuart's "The bridge is washed out"
I've had this Letterman appearance stashed in my favorites, for ages! I'm glad so many other folks were as blown away by this performance as I was!
First time I saw Kenny play was with Rodney Crowell. It was at the ‘Ace Of Clubs’ in Nashville. Rodney introduced him a ‘Buddy X’. Had to have been the early to mid 90s.
Met Marty at a bluegrass festival near Cincinnati in summer of 76 when he was with Lester Flatt...he was about 16 and I was 21. Had a neat conversation (about Elvis). Would love to meet him again to say hello.
Thank you! :)
As a retired union and factory trained line mechanic you never judged any other-one's work by the size of their tool box. :)
You gotta love Kenny Vaughn!!
Hearing these interviews is so enlightening to any guitar player or musician.... he was definitely in the right place at the right time. Thanks Kenny and....you too Otis!!!🎩🇺🇸🎩
Cousin Kenny is truly amazing. I love his work and the Lucinda Williams stuff too. I’d give up my left foot to play like him. I’d be happier than hell to play like that. Great sound and he’s totally underrated.
I have seen the Fabulous Superlatives live. The best show I ever saw, love these guys.
They should be much bigger stars than they are. People don’t know what’s good,
lackluster mediocre stuff is what many seem to go for today.
Boy, you’re not kidding! They should be much bigger than they are! I just saw them the other night and it was a smokin hot show!!
Couldn’t agree more.
I got to see this band in St Cloud MN at the 100 year old Paramount. They were just as hot as on Letterman. Those gents can play.
That Letterman appearance was magical. Dave was loose and funny, Paul and the band stayed out of it, and Marty and his band blew the roof off the dump all so effortlessly. "Get yourself some horses that can run, and let 'em run!" -Marty Stuart
Kenny is the coolest guy ever!
Marty and Kenny just great guitarists!
So glad i found this. I love Marty and the guys... i got to be a country session guitarist here in Argentina back in 2007
Yes here.. using B bender and G bender and his album Country Music from 2003 always keept me company on the road.. in good and bad gigs cause. Well . You know . Im into that wishfull thinking , im a fool for love and at that time always was too much month at the end of the money...
I met Kenny at a Lucinda show at the Ritz in Raleigh. Late 90s. He was just walking around the venue playing a different guitar after the show emptied out
Kenny is one of the best guitarist I've ever seen. He's stuff is so tasteful.
I was just watching a couple of shows of thiers from 3 years ago earlier today Otis.
So cool to hear Kenny talk about the amps. And from being on Letterman 👍
Marty has some great ones, but I gotta say, I still can't get enough of his "Way Out West" album - seriously, anything off of it (though in concert I LOVE when they cover Marty Robbins). Then again, how can you go wrong with Marty and the boys AND Mike Campbell...oh man to have been a fly on the wall for those sessions!
Didn’t discover it until last fall. Really is a piece of musical art, I love listening to the full album straight through
@@pope03 100% agree
Incredible musician . That clip on Letterman shows how COUNTRY should sound!
One of the greats!
Tempted. Always loved that song
I really appreciate these videos, they are wonderful time capsule.
Just saw these guys in a medium size auditorium where most acts sound *terrible* ... but Marty & The Fab Supers weren't clear as a bell, super warm tone, and just loud enough. Very intereting to hear Kenny's tech talk.
Loving country music all of it. It's American as the day is long , when cousin Kenny is playing it's that much better.
Good stuff Otis, thanks for all the work you do.
Peace from Texas ✌️
Thanks, Kevin!
Great interview. I love Kenny and Marty and their band and the wonderful music they put out. Letterman gig couldn't have gone better. Thanks.
Kenny Friggin Vaughn... love that guy..what a pro
The only Book i don't have by Marty is the one with Johnny Cash on the cover.I have three others,Marty is the encyclopedia of country music,i love to listen to him tell stories.I will say the best group of guy i ever met,i gave Marty a Drawing of Merle Haggard cause i knew they were great friends.I waited about three years to go see Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives, they had played in my area twice before,i was either sick or had to work, but this time my wife bought VIP tickets for Christmas.Buck Owens Chrystal Palace, got us a room and went to see the Band,i had a friggin blast, had to get up and dance around,my wife said "well there he goes" Time Don't Wait on Nobody!!!
im a rock blues guy from nyc never heard of these guys really!! BLOWN AWAY AT THE PERFORMANCE!! what a great video...thanks so much
Great vid ! Love Kenny Vaughn ! Fav Marty Sturart song...."You Can't Stop Love"
Even just hearing Kenny talk about the performance, I knew exactly which one it was. I watch that video at least once a week.
Marty Stuart is a legend
Thank you Otis. I have a deep admiration for Kenny Vaughan. He is a most humble amazing human being blessed with the talent of music that very few can even imagine.
And hopefully he's still married to Carmela. An absolutely stunningly beautiful woman. And man can that gal sing.!
I bless your generosity, my highest gratitude and appreciation for all the love and support you have been showing me and my music, am so grateful. God bless you! 🙏🎸🎙
