We are Jim and Jessica, a husband and wife team who made the leap from city life to an off-grid homestead in Southern Arizona. We've started this lifestyle equipped only with two Permaculture Design Certificates and a whole lot of determination.
We’d like to share our journey of starting a sustainable homestead from scratch with all its ups, downs, and lessons learned. Watch us take on the challenge of modern homesteading, off-grid life, and turning this barren piece of land into a desert oasis.

Hey guys, maybe after the next rains, you can get a cistern update! How much is in there? Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.
It was in the beginning of the video. He literally put a camera in it.
The Good bad and ugly of this storm ... I am most impressed with how both of you are coping with all of these things that need fixing and my heart goes out to both of you, You definitely have the homesteading spirit .. I believe in both of you and your strength and knowledge to pull you through this mess ( there has to be something that can make the cob water proof)
Both of you are in my prayers, *A little research the lime plaster is or was a good choice you just needed a waterproof layer too like beeswax, that's the most natural solution ... I am heart broken to see something like this happen to you !
As a brother in challenging homesteading, I love your pernacity, determination and optimism. Dont give up. There's a solution to everything And the biggest challenge of homesteading is figuring it out as you go. You guys are tough and set examples for the rest of us while keeping it real. Love you guys.
Everything is a learning process. So glad the damage wasn't any worse. Also really good to see new posts from you guys. 👍👍👍
Those sky views are gorgeous including the rainy ones.
I’m sorry you had the damage to the dome and that valve house collapsing, hopefully it won’t be a big of a job like you’re expecting. Keep all the good work both on the build and with your animals.
If you fly over Devon in the UK it looks greener than surrounding areas due to all the rain the County has. Houses made from Cob are common, and all have a hard roof that fully covers the walls and overhangs enough for drips not to a problem. Some of our houses are over 100 years old. Having a bell bottom on it doesn't help as it slows the decent.
Definitely inspiring! Thanks a lot. Cheers from México.
The images of the storms are spectacular and awe inspiring...thank you.
Thanks for sharing 👍😀
Appreciate the honesty about the situation. Seems a major priority right now would be sealing the outside of the domb as quickly as possible.
Seems like that should have been a priority a long time ago.
yes but disaster is internet gold.
I wish for you two the very best ! You are so kind and sweet ! God Bless you and your doggies !
Hi guys “ Keep the faith, your journey is exciting
Glad you got rain~but sorry for the damage
Hope y'all have a good day 🤗👍❤
Stopping by to get an update. Everything is looking amazing! Well done! Sorry about the damage from the storm but know you’ll get it worked out.
Good time to mark low spots..... N divert flow ... 1.5 in rain WOW
Storms are difficult but your managing in your no nonsense way.
Your positive attitude is so refreshing! I love you two! The dogs are sweet also. What a team!
Amazing such little rain that u gather so much.... Kutos to u.....
Sure do enjoy your work. It’s phenomenal and inspiring. I just love watching and wishing I could do.
T bone flavored can, great work Jim and Jess
Jim I have 2 thought for you.
# 1 could you mix up a batch or 2 of cob and fill in the gap to the eaves until you make it down that far with the lime plaster. Or put a layer of plaster right on top of the eaves 6" tall. That should help with water cascading down the rest of the dome. Also when you know a big rain is coming remove the plywood platforms. Or install a 2x4
under the plywood next to the dome. maybe the water will not hit the dome on the way down.
#2 On your valve box . I don't remember how deep it is but could you bury a barrel or 2 stacked on top of one another. A round structure is much stronger than rectangle.
Keep up the great work. You two are very hard workers. ❤🇺🇸🤍🇺🇸💙
My Best to you both fellow earthlings
Don't feel embarrassed. Learning curve for sure. You guys are doing an amazing job and I love what the tippy top looks like. About 10 years ago I decided this will be my dream style home once I become as an empty nester, or I would have already started.
Be safe y’all! ❤ from Northern Virginia (NOVA)
Our Labrador loves bubbles but our Great Pyrenees is not the least bit fond of them and acts like Lluvia.
Your views are so beautiful!
Love watching. N the rain seines beautiful... Best wishes...
Starting top down instade of bottom(sill) up is a mistake. When it dries out it will open voids. Bottom up has compression on your side. Cheers. Keep going. You can make it work eventually.
The cold is moving in early here too. It feels more like September than August....
Great to see that with such intense rain most everything he’d up really well👏👍
Outstanding show the rain storm was great I'm glad she's got a lot of history on it I enjoyed watching you go through your steps it's great to see your videos showing several days instead of 2 days in a row keep up the good work young man I feel for you sure enough that was going to be a pain in the butt but it'll be bigger and better I know God bless you and your wife
Lol I am so happy that you finished ( I wish I was a little bit taller lyric !!! Yes siiiirrrrrr story of my life!
- love to see all is going well ! Keep keeping it in it moving always!
Excellent job on the air vent pipes, Jim. Don’t kick yourself too hard on the valve box, as you’ve both been very busy. You’ll both get the repairs squared away as you move forward. God bless!
I've been wondering if you were going to take the wood pieces down or keep them for future maintenance. It sure is a good feeling to see you capture all the rain.
3:00 - I’m getting nauseous just watching😆
Dang… Vertigo!
Good luck with all the work, guys! 🥺
Beautiful skies. The storm was magnificent looking.
It was you guys! Your build video came up the other day…watched you make that house for months. When I was watching it I kept thinking that is gonna fall down… rain wind etc. hope it worked out!
You guys are awesome!!!
Uvie is fun to watch playing with the canister. Wow, that's a crazy storm! Wow, an inch and a half of rain! Nice that you put Uvie in the back of the Tahoe. She looks really happy. Great job patching the walls with cob. Good job getting the pipe attached better for the IBC tote. Too bad the valve box fell in on itself. Don't get trapped in there with that mud! I'm glad that the plaster and rocks up on the top did wonderfully! It'll be so great when you close up that gap of the eaves with the dome. Your dome house sure looks beautiful! You guys are such hard workers. Adding the screen to those pipes was a great idea. Not only bugs but snakes shouldn't be able to get inside now. Great job GDP. Thanks for this video Jim and Jess.
Nice choice of music for the rainstorm.
Yes, “Clair de Lune” by Claude Debussy.
You take it all in stride love your attitude always upbeat. I wish you much success in completing your home.
We get those storms every afternoon in Florida. Crazy.
With the studs cut off, it looks less like a Dalek and more like a sombrero. Good Luck, Rick
You haven't told us about the water level in the cistern for a good while how's that level lookin.
Wow, that’s a cool looking house.
That was sure a lot of rain!
We all want to know how much water went into the cistern after a rain like that.
How are the frames for the solar panels holding up?? Anything you might do differently? Are you thinking of upgrading and expanding the solar array in the future?
Hi guys glad you weathered that storm and the damage was minimal, you guys looked after the dogs , living here in Camborne Cornwall England can be like monsoon season glad we live in a 3 story flat part way up a slope which the water rushes by .love you guys keep safe xx
Amazing!
Oh my stomach! I can’t believe my vertigo watching you video up on top looking down, and when you pan I nearly fall off my recliner! Lol.
Nice to see you both! God bless
Let's Go green! Part of the color if agua
I admire people like you. A friend from Greece
Evening monsoon storms in Cochise county are amazing. They cool things off and green up the landscape.
Chaska chicken looks as though has slippers on..... LOL. 10 yr old amazing
Good to see you back
I try to watch your postings but bc I don't see them all, I can see the jumps in cob damage to the dome that maybe you don't see looking at it every day. I'm not hooting on the work, I'm congratulating you on how well it has held up considering the rains and wind so far. I am impressed with the mix Jess has come up with for the final coat of the dome. I am looking forward to you showing how much water you have in the large tank now. The design of your capture system is awesome.
nice too see you guys lov your dog
We have 4 cats ,their favorite toy is watching the litter box dump after they take a dump ! 😺😸😻🙀
Waterproof that home!!!!
I lived in Eastern AZ and monsoons are amazing.
Look forward to watching you work on the box-should be great content. I like the way you two see this as a learning experience.
You're getting a good supply of rain for the upcoming year! You're taking things in stride (snakes, rain damage) and moving forward. Well done! (I like those snipets of the furry and feathery family, and nature creatures, too. Enjoy them.)
Pleased don't give Up and stay happy together. Your Karin from Germany
That rain was pretty intense.
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love you guys.
Ouch. Lessons learned. Don’t let it bog you down. Keep your motivation and move forward, guys! You’re so close to the finish line on the outside.
It is kinda cool when water feels like great wealth…
Excellent 👍 ☮️
Hate to hear the bad news. Been wondering how well it would hold up during a major storm. Stay safe and have a great week!
This building style reminds me of the animated films I’ve seen of Bilbo Baggins and the Hobbits. I’m definitely impressed… 😊
You guys inspire my by your example, keep up the good work. We are all imperfect and so make mistakes, it is how we learn from them that can make us wise. Regards to you all.
You may not know it but Anatolians are known as canine excavators. They love to dig. Although mine never did, yours looks like she enjoys it.
They're wonderful dogs.
Reminds me of “Rain in the Summertime” song by The Alarm.
Ive always loved it when a good hard rain and thunderstorms roll through Utah in the summer.
Sorry to see that you have repair challenges ahead, but, You both are taking it all like champions. I am grateful 🙏🏿 for monsoon season because I have gardens that needed the rain. Lord knows the sun is fierce enough. #Keepupthegreatwork
Awesome
Good job fellas
Thanks for being definitive about the grades of elements you use and why. Extraordinary energy and drive you both have. Finally a happy face when we see dog fur drifting around us... it's true purpose
Lol, just noticed this was last summer! We're in the middle of really bad rain/ snow storms February 2023, property trapping people from 10-18' of snow. Power outages everywhere in So AND Northern CA .
Looking good.
This is impressive work.
Jim that high work makes me nervous. Proud you and Jess can work that high.
These videos are great. Incidentally, I love that you show us the dogs and their playful antics. And your background music is great. I didn’t really understand why you did all the wood and pipe cutting off the structure. I’m sure it makes it look nicer but wouldn’t it have been helpful to leave it alone for climbing or standing on the top later?
Which one was this? We have had so many this year. I've broken down and cried more than once this monsoon from damage I have suffered. I think the tenacity of living in the desert. Sending love your way.
Alright you half had me when you said 'shnikes' in another vid but then the 'doesnt like this witchcraft' with the bubbles. Got me.
That rattler gave me shock. I am not a Tarzan tobe in isolated, rattler zone. Thums up ti you guys. Stay safe
Curious- what about a mote around the house to keep it from sitting in water?
Or maybe waterways directing water away from standing on the ground around.
Monsoon season brings great sunsets up here in Phoenix!
Today is the 68th day in a row with NO RAIN in TeXas!
I collect rain water or go into town to fill 16 five gallon bottles. Going to town tomorrow AGAIN. I have 28 chickens & 48 rabbits that go through 5 gals a day.
Hey guys I just subscribed to your channel I love your story AND the dogs . Hello from Kentucky
Sorry about the damage but I’m so excited to see your big tank full and can’t wait to see how much you can gather into the underground cistern 🤗
You know how the tiny shiny home is a part of a work group of homesteaders in the north valley. We have the sister group from McNeil to Douglas to Bisbee. Sometimes we all get together for big projects. All local homesteaders building off grid in Cochise county. You are welcome to check it out.
Great job
We here in Arizona we know we have to have rain we need it really bad I'm sure you enjoyed the rain also being in Southern Arizona
Nice, please keep in mind those screens clog up very quickly, let the pups free range, they’ll be good. Wishing you the best.
THUMBS up to this video!!!! Everything is a learning curve to making it better. Stay positive and POSITIVE!!! You all take care!!!!👍👍👍👍👍🌅🎆
Lots of water but it sure sucks when we get damaged. Glad it wasn’t too terribly bad. 🙈
Thank you Pam!
Happy Monsoons.. hope they come steady and not so severe. Good works, as always )
That barb wire gives me fury sometimes, but it works. And that is the craziest thing ever.
Wowsers!🤯 Mother Nature is the best proctor. No way you can cheat!🤓 Just keep on cobbin’!😎❤️
