Just found out this is actually based on real events besides finding the ship in the desert and the plains in Mexico and et was based on the alien eb who was mentored by a air force officer and when eb got sick and was dying and the government tried making contact with space to try and get his fellow aliens to come and save him and to build a trust to try and get more technology and the boy in et was actually the air force officer who lived with eb day and night for a few years and years later the contact made was the events in this movie where aliens landed in 1954 at holland air force base in New Mexico and the second was at Edwards air force base in California and there was a possibility a third landing but not for sure was a homestead air force base in Florida and president Eisenhower signed a treaty

This is one of my "go to" movies. I first went to see this at the Odeon Southend in March 1978. I was mesmerised. I took my parents the next night, and sitting next to my Dad and seeing his face light up when the Mother Ship came over Devil's Tower and feeling the cinema shake is a memory that will stay with me - we always stare at the night sky together and he is now 92, so sadly one day I accept, that I will look and see him up there forever. I went to see the remastered version in 2017 and actually cried at the opening scenes - seeing it again on the big screen brought so much joy. This will always bring me a nostalgia overload that nothing in the last 20 years can bring.

A sequel could work though if it was a psychological film that played on pepple's belief in Aliens. It could be set 40yrs later in our present day, and would focus on a man who turned up on a field at Devil's Mountain claiming to be Roy Neary. His appearance causes a media storm and controversy when the man ask to see his family. Basically they've all moved on his kids have all grown up and got families of their own, and when they see him for the first time they see he has not aged and looks exactly like their father who, to their knowledge cracked up and went missing all those years ago. The reuinion is emotional and short-lived as the family ultimately reject him, claiming him to be a imposter and the whole thing a sick joke.
Roy is interviewed by all maner of Govt Officials and FBI, put through lie detector tests, no one can work it out. The film would follow Roy as he tries to piece together what has happened, and lead to two possible conclusions. Either Roy did go up, out there with the aliens, or he dreamt the whole thing and is not who he thinks he is. The film would work on a similar level to Bladerunner where the real truth is hidden and the audience have to pay attention to work it all out at the end.
Roy would be voiced by Richard Dreyfus but with the tempo up on his voice, to make him sound young, but would use a double and cgi in the same realistic style as was done for the film - The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, to make Richard Dreyfus look young exactly like he did in the original film.

I saw it recently and was quite disappointed. Jaws, Jerassic Park, ET, basically every other movie Steven Spielberg was involved with was more entertaining. Close Encounters was downright boring which is an accomplishment for a movie about aliens coming to Earth. Older sci fi like 2001 A Space Odessey had better graphics even though it was the slowness of the story that looked like the biggest weakness.

1977 was truly a one of a kind year for movies. The likes of we may never see again. The two blockbusters of '77, Close Encounters (and we all know the other one.) Had such an impact on not just the box office, but also American culture as a whole. Particularly Close Encounters, how Steven Spielberg presented this cultural icon was nothing short of astounding. And 40+ years later, the reverberations from Close Encounters of The Third Kind are still being felt today.

Please, if you get a chance to, go see this in theatres. Its basically just the directors cut of the film but in 4K, not any noticeable alterations or added cgi to the ships. It's spectacular on the big screen and there's no other like it. Still, to this day, no film effects me emotionally like this masterpiece does. The practical effects still hold up pretty well and It's Spielberg's magnum opus in my opinion. There was a little pre-show to go with it about the making of the movie which was interesting. If you've got any friends or family members who haven't seen it yet, get them to gO because it's stunning.

It is Ironic that as a youngster who had seen Aliens by the age of 9, that this film gave me more terror than James Cameron's epic action film. Because this felt real, and I remember I experience this again when I purchased this film on blu -ray, there is something very unsettling about this film but wow does the ending provide warmth to the heart. An amazing film that plays on the fear of the unkown but gives us a knowing comfort of warmth by films end!
