    STORYLINE:
Former South African President Nelson Mandela visited the grave of the late Diana, Princess of Wales at her ancestral home in Althorp on Friday.
Mandela planted a tree in the grounds of the Northamptonshire estate and laid a wreath at the island burial site of the Princess of Wales.
A temporary bridge was erected so the elderly statesman could have access to the island. Her grave is normally off-limits to visitors who can visit a memorial statue on a bank opposite the island.
The 84 year old is visiting Britain to discuss a new charity project with Diana's brother Earl Spencer. He will outline proposals to combine the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Fund with his own charity, which helps young people suffering from Aids in South Africa.
Diana met the statesman for initial discussions about the idea five months before her death in August 1997.
Mandela said that Diana had made a great impression on him and that the news of her death had been devastating.
Spencer said that the visit of the former South African leader was a great honour for his family and the Princess. He declined to comment on the collapse of the Paul Burrell trial.
Burrell, Diana's former Butler, had been facing a possible prison sentence for allegedly stealing personal items from the Princess of Wales.
Prosecutors dropped the theft charges on Friday, explaining that Queen Elizabeth II had said he told her
shortly after the princess's death that he had taken some of Diana's papers for safekeeping.
Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris August 31 1997.

When I went to the UK for my holidays the friend I was staying with was going to take me there and when I said “ on a boat?” They all laughed at me. I’d had never seen the walkway and I thought I had heard once that u had to row to the middle. I know a few years ago they fixed it up for her 20th anniversary of her death and her boys were more involved, was a ramp put in then? I had a great holiday but I misunderstood our trip to Scotland for the military tattoo. I thought they meant 3 days that that I didn’t know they meant 3 days to get there. So I really only had one day in London....I jumped in a London cab and said “ talk to me” he was like “ talk to u about what? U gonna get in or not?” I said “ yay I wanted a real Londoner to take me around. And wow he took me everywhere for over two hrs ( I told him I only had £60 pounds on me. He said, that’ll do mam” ) I got the right cabbie for sure. Even had time to stop at Harrods to get my gfs their bags. I had two boxes loaded and they said “ write down ur name and addy and it’s free postage” I said “ free postage?” Yep! Then get another box ready. They knew the cabbie was waiting for me lol I got some damn great photos. I’ll be back. This time we’ll make sure we have time to visit Diana. She’s the same age as me and they announced their engagement on my birthday. I’ll never forget when the words came across the screen. Then the news. I cried and hope u would all wake up early. We watched a lady walk up to the gates and put the first flower down.. I cried saying it must be true.

I believe she is actually burried in the Spencer crypt inside the church. I think the island burial was to keep people away from the church. If it was known that she was burried with her Dad in the church, the mass crowds visiting would have been unmanageable. I day say there is a memorial stone on the island but I doubt Diana is there. Probably only very close family know the truth.
