The Philippines has continued to exercise restraint in the face of Chinese aggression in the South China Sea / West Philippines Sea. The USA has even offered help if the Philippines activates the Mutual Defense Treaty. To date, the Philippines has refused to activate the Mutual Defense Treaty and has maintained peace in the regions.
Despite tensions between China and the Philippines, the Chinese Coast Guard did assist in the rescue of two stranded Filipino fishermen. The fishermen's boat exploded in the West Philippines Sea. At first, the Chinese Coast Guard blockaded Philippines Coast Guard rescue efforts but eventually assisted in the rescue.

Most don’t realize, the Philippines have had a few centuries dealing with the Chinese. Long before America came on the scene. There’s aspects of Chinese influence in the islands. They both have had to learn to be good neighbors.
