  • Only a small number of people each year are accepted into the University of Oxford. But why do people not get in, and what can we learn from this?

    Love this channel! I was wondering what you think about books such as “the Oxbridge formula”, do they really help students or do you have any other recommendations? Also when you do go to oxford, could you do some student vlogs as I don’t see many oxford you tubers that study STEM subjects. Thanks😁

    • @Oxcentric
      @Oxcentric  Před 4 lety +17

      I have mixed opinions on the How To Get Into Oxbridge type books. I read only one (ironically called "How To Get Into Oxbridge") which had some useful tips, but only a limited amount of relevant subject-specific advice. I feel they do promote a handful of myths (e.g. you MUST wear a suit) which is a little problematic. Overall, I think they can help students if they specifically want to know a more general view on advice and like it all in one book. Despite this, increasingly large amounts of the advice in them is online for free. I've not read "The Oxbridge Formula" so unfortunately I can't feedback on that specifically!
      I'm hoping to be doing some more daily life stuff at university! At the moment I'm working through more resource-style videos like this to help fill a few knowledge gaps I feel there exist online. :)

    The best line came near the end - 'Do not let your parents or teachers force you into making a decision that isn't right for you' .
    Having seen Oxford, and strongly disliking the University, I was persuaded at the very last minute to apply there. I was going to apply to Cambridge, and was all ready to do that. Then was advised I was apparently more likely to get into Oxford.
    Listening to this untimely advice is one of the biggest regrets of my life.
    Thankfully I did not receive an offer, so was not under any more pressure to go to Oxford.

    • @Oxcentric
      @Oxcentric  Před 3 lety +3

      Hey! Oxford do specify a preference for 7s, 8s and 9s on their website. You're quite right that they are the best you can get, hence why Oxford like to see them on an application.
      As for me, my GCSEs were all Grade 9s with the exception of 1x 8, 1x A* and 1x A. Hope that answers your question!

    My hopes are getting crushed as every school in Lebanon (Excluding the very few who run on the US system) does not offer any AP exams, IB exams, SAT subject tests, or A levels. Is there any way I can get into any good university in the UK without leaving my country just for some tests? I have a 3.9 GPA and a 1560 on my SATS, I also have a lot of extracurricular activities, and I speak 4 different languages fluently while also learning a 5th one at the moment. I'm also taking what most people consider the hardest courses in the Lebanese education system and am doing very good at them. Do I have a chance to get into universities like Oxford, Cambridge, or even Manchester?

    would there be interview questions that you should prepare for? such as, how did you end up applying for this subject? were you asked such questions?

    • @Oxcentric
      @Oxcentric  Před 3 lety +11

      I was asked why I wanted to study engineering (my subject) as a starter question. Thinking about why you want to study your subject is a good idea, as it is a quite common query. However, don't worry about trying to rehearse a perfect answer, as such a question is mostly to help you settle into the interview as opposed to scrutinising your motives.
