  • What "MARTY FRIEDMAN" Thinks About Guitar Solos in 2024....
In an interview with Guitar world in 2023 Marty Friedman said that the 8 bar guitar solo should die a slow and painful death. However, in a second interview with Guitar World Magazine he claimed his comments were misconstrued. What do you think about all this, is Marty right?

He is right though. Joining together one lick or pattern after another and calling it a solo, is pretty much a shallow and non-musical form of soloing. A true solo is an artistic expression of the musician's vision, perhaps taking the listener on a unique journey, sometimes profound, emotional, thought provoking and other times another perspective of the song that the vocalist could not do. I do not think Marty sounds bitter or annoyed, he is trying to make people realise that soloing should mean something more than just a standard song section thrown in for the sake of it. That being said, short form solos that burst in and do something interesting and perhaps fun and then exit after a few bars can be quite exhilerating and entertaining.

The guy that composed the Killing road, lucretia, tornado of souls, etc etc etc solos can say whatever he wants to say about guitar solos.
