My Dad loves the Pet Shop Boys. He's 76 this year. In an argument once, I asked him what he really wanted in life. He said all he wanted to do was sit in his own house and listen to Pet Shop Boys at 3 in the morning with a glass of Port. He played this one in the car once so loud the vehicle was vibrating and he was shouting the lyrics at the top of his voice, windows open going 70 down the motorway. I love my Dad.

Now HE sounds like an awesome dad. My Dad didn't go that far, but he was always cool with listening to music I liked, even if he didn't like it. When I was a teenager (back in the 90s) we'd be driving down the highway with Slayer going at top volume, and he'd at least act like he was having fun. I think he was in some ways, because he was spending time with his son, and I think that is what was important to him really.

I always loved this song. I'm 62 now and I still get a melancholy feel from the beautiful lyrics, melody and instruments. I was in my 20s and enjoying my life as an 80s alternative kid. Thinking seriously about the lyrics I'm reminded that a lot of what I did was considered a sin. I didn't care so much then.but thanks to Jesus I can live in gratitude instead of fear of punishment.

“Actually” was the only cassette we had in a car on our 6 hour long trip to the seaside in 1989 or 1990. I was 9 years old. The cassette just kept on spinning for those 6 hours and my parents never complained. I had such wild imagination listening to this album. Amazing memory.

The younger people of today don’t realise how important this song is. When I was growing up being gay was very much seen as a “sin”. Even the media, politicians etc. would say how immoral homosexuality was in the 80’s and 90’s (and obviously even more so beforehand).
Even to this day, if I ever have a one night stand I still find shame in it. And not for promiscuity reasons but because I was told that it was wrong. I’m glad times are changing but they’re changing a bit too much on the other side of the spectrum where it’s supposed to be “celebrated”, which it’s not. It’s a natural part of life that should be left alone.
Even if I am a 2000's kid, this is a song in my childhood. My father used to play these and I feel so nostalgic listening to this.
