Johnny Hoogerland is sitting there tangled in a barbed wire fence wondering what he has to do to be included.
😂
@@daniellongworth7513 Casartelli wasn't on there either.
Agreed
That wasn't a crash. That was getting ridden off the Road by flecha, who was at his turn ridden off the Road by a teamcar. That chauffeur should never be allowed back in the peloton
Convinced Hoogerland was going to be No.1, not even the top 10??????? WTF!
Add the 2021 stage one stupid cardboard sign incident to this
I was about to write this😂😂
Yea
Fucking seriously.
That woman should be put to jail.
@@Rafael-qx2ye Multiple assault charges.
How can you make this list without including the crash of Johnny Hoogerland? That was horrific!
Steven Peeters Koradin I was just wondering that exact same thing.
Yeah same here, straight into the barbed wire fence.. that's a top 3 surely
That was one of the most horrific ever .
It was too gross to include...
NBC Sports has never heard of Dutch rider Johnny Hoogerland. They only know British riders like Cavendish
As great as Cavendish is, he has often been the architect of his own crashes.
And everyone else's
unless Sagan elbows him and Degenkolb into the barriers
@@herbertschmidt1719 cavendish had no line and was reckless and dangerous to try and shoot the gap.
@@herbertschmidt1719 It was instant clear after the race that sagan did nothing wrong. The fact he was disqualified was the scandal
Not great. Just dirty.
The way the other policeman just disappears over the barrier is hilarious to me. It's about 2:46
Ikr
he hit the barrier then came back into the other riders and got floored he didnt go over
@@rhyssanders9122 I said the other policeman, further forward, he hops over the barrier instead of getting hit
oh brilliant, thank you, I didn't see that the first time around!
He even would Not been Hit when He have stayed there...
I think the worst part is getting ran over by the guy right behind you at 20+ mph
The worst is hitting with the floor
Try 45+ mph
Try 60!!
@@asier_prieto_ yup, concrete hurts on impact. I’ve never been run over by another rider, but hitting the pavement hurts. As I’ve gotten older, it hurts longer.
They can sometimes hit around 60 mph on the straight aways.
Well we now know number 1 can be topped
Love how Gilbert casually gave a thumbs up to the camera and then jumped back on his bike to continue the race.
Especially because he had a broken knee cap.
@@ammramy😣 Ouch! These guys are unbelievable. How they endure pain like that is astonishing. 😬
the older era was a race for Tough guys . . .now its all about 'Tactics' and 'Domestiques'... ie fairys . . .. . . .@@MontagZoso
"all about" ... they are hard enough today. @@alanhargreaves-thevoiceofr2361
I think about Hoogerland whenever I see any race. Sad that nothing much has changed. Seeing Richie Porte crashing 2 yrs in a row stage 9 puts me on edge on stage 9s. Hoping for Porte’s best this year.
When u see a crash in Tour de France you got to know that Porte or Dan Martin are amongst the fallen :')
0:54 the guy in black wondering where his bike is
Every single one of these guys are so badass. They all get up again, and try to go even faster.
Beloki's crash and Armstrung's escape was insane, also Johnny Hoogerland of course with the barbwire summersault.
Beloki's crash going in to Gap when Lance Armstrong went through the field should be there. So should Hoogerland's crash where he got run off the road.
I was thinking the same!
The Tour never made a formel statement appologizing to Hoogerland.
Yeah same
I can still hear his cries afterwards; horrific sound.
Its too horrific to show
on July 17, 1951 Wim van Est fell 70 meters down a ravine during the tour de france. The incident happened between the col d'aubisque and col en col du soulor in the Pyrenees. he survived the fall without breaking anything and had to be hoisted up with inner tubes. he had lost his yellow jersey, but it could have ended much worse. now a memorial stone has been placed in the rock face where it happened. he was the first Dutchman to wear the yellow jersey.
@@dansprague2 i dont know if they got withdrawn but they used their tubes to rescue him!
If only Fabio Casartelli had been that lucky....
@@jorritmul926 Even more mythical was the commercial he did for Pontiac wristwatches afterwards. The slogan was "my heart stopped but my pontiac was still running."
Ripped off on a tree, was it?
His yellow jersey.
3:51 I know it's not funny but that synchronous flip...
Both in the same team I guess
It WAS funny...
It is pretty funny.
It's time for a top 9, NBC!
watching this after cardboard crash on stage 1
Same
Same
I've always thought road biking wasn't that crazy but jeez some of these crashes are super gnarly
Biking is soo dangerous. So speedful and masses
It's argurably the most dangerous mainstream sport in the world. The riders are seriously tough athletes.
@@gemsandlasers269 Downhill bike race is the most for me
@@meldrop4411 Yeah you could definitely make a pretty strong case for that. Or downhill skiing (although not sure if those really class as mainstream).
it isnt crazy , anything with a pile up will look gnarly
Can always count on Cavendish being in a crash comp.
Always look forward to it too.
and richie porte
Johnny Hoogerland not included? Joseba Beloki? Ullrich in the ditch?
I think it's safe to say this deserves a top 10, including two massive pileup crashes in Stage 1 of Tour de France 2021.
Watching this just before I go out on my ride 😬😰😂
Aah
The guy at 1:34 who just casually pours some water on his wounds is a legend lol
‘The crash was because of high speed and nervousness” why does this sound like the British version of “ he needs some milk “
Wym, he doesn’t have any potion effects
Add one more to the list, titled:
"Idiotic woman holds sign and then tries to flee the country after causing crash"
Well.
No one with a sign so far this year
@@ChokyoDK We did have bundles of hay though. Tour de France, failing at rider safety since 1903.
4:55 some people say, the bike is still down there
"oh my goodness, me!" pretty much sums it up lol - love you Paul!
I remember watching most of these and they look just as painful now as they did then.
I thought Gilbert's over-the-edge crash happened in last year's tour (2018)...
exactly ! bien vu !
Johnny Hoogerland and Joseba Beloki?
Casartelli...
Johnny hoogerland
Might have to update this one
That was Cavendish's fault. He head-butted the other rider
Sagan got revenge on him haha
Sprinters often headbutt each other to let others know they're there. The door just closed on him and the other rider by the rider on the right. No one is really at fault there.
Maybe Simon Gerrans shouldn't have been there? He would never beat the likes of Cav, Kittel, and Sagan in a straight sprint so why mix it up with them?
Timestamp please
Yup.. karma hits back. A deserving injury to be put back to earth and humanity
Been watching TDF for almost 20 years. Have to say I miss Paul Sherwin's commentary.
And now Phil liggett.
The one into barbed wire was worse than most of these
It's just amazing that more people dont get severely injured or die. Be safe out there
Cavendish goes down with a touch of wheels.
If NBC announcers knew anything about cycling they'd know it was Cavendish throwing his shoulder or elbow. As he always does.
Yawn.
Don't forget head-butting and cutting wheels
And leaning on Sagan which causes Sagan to move back in order to not fall as well which caused Sagan to get disqualified.
Cavendish should just stop trying to squeeze himself through gaps he can't fit through
@@tonksnjoysatan8503 Sagan being Dq'd was utter! BS. Cavendish has a long history of doing these things.
tonksnjoy Satan. That end description basically sums up how Ayerton Senna drives, but F1 fans love him.
Johnny Hoogerland in St Flour stage ?
Joseba Beloki going down to Gap ?
Johann Bruyneel in Cormet de Roseland ?
They were more impressive than Cavendish ones
cavendisch is always in most accidents because he causes them.
espechially in the sprints
Absolutely agree with you! Bravo 👍👏👏👍👍
Well for 2017 he didn’t. Sagan did.
Given he's won 30 Tour de France stages, he's actually been in remarkably few crashes. They're just memorable because he's going at 60 MPH and has about 15 guys behind him ready to run him over as he falls.
@@siddhantsingh8030 Sagan moved his arm a bit but i still think that there was no space for cavendish a he would push Sagan
@@MrBurdaBurda or maybe Sagan went into a space that wasn't there.
Cyclists amaze me. Strong but light weight, and their amazing agility. There is so little space on the road. How are there not more crashes?
Cause they are acrobats on 2 wheels.
zäh wie leder...
Number 6, we're just going to pretend Cav wasn't using his head and leaning on the other rider? Good riddance to that cheap tactic using bum, glad his team dropped him for this year.
He was falling already, before he bummed his head on that rider because he and an other one went into each other. He was trying to save that situation, either he saves it, or crashes even harder with the guy Cav put his head on. Check the footage better first
Anyone else surprised how many of these involve Cav? I’m still passed they relegated Sagan on the one!
They should have disqualified Demare instead, he caused it
Matthew Williams They should have just relegated his wandering elbow 😕
Sagan's elbow in that clip is the reason why I will never do any competitive cycling race.
@@Maxwaehrens its been debated already that it wasn't an elbow, that angle makes it look like he shoves him but its him balancing after cav tried to move inside him.
@@IJoAnZI no matter if that is what caused it or not. It's still something which happens intentionally in these kind of races.
The Manx Missle became less arrogant after crashing hard a few times. Sagan was punished for Cavendishes' bad line between Sagan and the barrier.
less arrogant...ha ha...he is the best ever sprinter....i think i would be quite confident too....
THESE COMPETITION ARE SO DANGEROUS
When It Should’ve Been A Day Of Glory For that’s so sad
🤣🤣had me dying the way he said it
I believe the Gilbert crash occurred near the same spot that Fabio Casartelli died in 1995 for Team Motorola. That descent is very dangerous. A good reason for them having to wear helmets. These guys take all sorts of risks descending, they really are daredevils. God I love the Tour. The Giro is also quite good. I hope that they structure the new time bonuses at the top of the major climbs so that it somehow benefits the GC. Nothing like seeing someone like Barguil, De Gendt or Gillaume Martin take all the bonuses. LOL
Thor Husovd a persenal friend of Gilbert for many years was commetating for Norwegian TV when it happened. You could just hear the pure terror on his voice and the extreme relief when Phillip got up.
As Thor stated afterwards, he was convinced that he just watched one of his best friends die.
Yes this descent is very dangerous, (Portet D'Aspet pass). Many had the same crash French popular champion as Poulidor (whom had to stop the tour due to Head Trauma )and Thevenet whom had the same crash than Gilbert and finished the stage fortunatly.I know the road
Yes, a good reason for them having to wear helmets. In fact, the death of Fabio Casartelli was the direct reason, that helmets were made mandatory.
@@dfuher968 wasn’t it after Kivilev’s fall ?
Honestly, i dont think a helmet would save Casatelli, the speed he hit that rock with would've shattered his helmet instantly - but yes i agree helmets 100% of the time, they are sometimes going 80kmph or more.
I'm surprised they left Laurens ten Dam's face planting on a rock out. I guess it only counts if they catch it on camera tho. At least the sprints will be safer without Cavendish and Kittel there this year.
kenneth street Seriously! Will anyone be missing Cavendish?
@@spiffpilot2589 who?
The most beautiful crash scene, is Sagan proporsing a payback time to Cavendish, with love😉😘😂😂😂😂
Crashes are scary 😧 and painful 😣..
With that speed , 35 mph + .
Cavendish can have his own crash video
What about Cesartelli. He died in wordst crach ever in cycling history. R.I.P.
It's not possible to give a thumbs up here without feeling the amount of pain.
That Richie Port crash gives me goosebumps when I watch it.
Mor I think about even the media car hitting the two riders in 2010 n the motor making chris n ritchie porter hitting them were worst than these
Might give an honorable (or dishonorable??) mention to van Aert in the stage 12 individual time trial in Pau. And so close to finishing the stage, too. Gnarly crash. 😫😫
So glad he recovered fully
Really love watching this ❤
alright...
Why am I laughing and wincing at the same time 😂😂
As someone who's broken their collarbone 7 times, some of these gave me flashbacks D:
That sucks man
I am a 4 timer. I dont even go to the hospital anymore. "Honey, where is my brace?"
You don’t have the Tour de France without the close racing, crazy crashes, and occasional uprising of protesters mid-race.
Protesters? When did that happen?
@@vialactea5549 today
That police officer jumping into the crowd, good reflexes sir/lady.
It hurts just watching it. 😭
RIP Paul Sherwin 🤧
Number 3 got destroyed when he fell over. Hit his head at such an awkward angle on the side.
Thank goodness they didn't show Fabio Casartelli at number one. Also Richie Porte being thankful that he was wearing his helmet.
Great Gilbert..!!!!
Let's just hope that there won't be too many crashes this year
why?
@@jclm4188 because I frankly don't want the riders to get injured?
J Clm are you stupid?
There were too many crashes in the last 50k of stage 3
@@Max-uo4ud yap I saw it. And 2 on the first stage.. And I think 1 in the time trial
And a footballer gets tapped on the shine and rolls around like it's the end of the world. These lads are full of bravery the next day they'll be back in the saddle.
To be fair, the reason why footballers (aka soccer players) fake injury at every opportunity is because they and their team are rewarded for it. I don't blame them, I blame the way the sport is officiated. Now with instant replay, they could and should review those incidents and any player found to be diving should be kicked out of the game, right then and there. That would put a stop to that foolishness.
@@driver9337 It's also that any contact with your leg when you are running makes you instanly lose control.
Football/soccer is obviously more touched by this due to its nature.
But anyone falling doesn't need to roll, here it is diving.
@@clashgoneofficial I'm not talking about players getting kicked/hit in the leg and then falling because of it. In most cases that could be reasonable. I'm talking about players barely getting touched and acting like they are in terrible pain, going down as if they've been shot. Unless you get cleated, you are not in any serious pain as a result of getting kicked/hit in the leg. And as if that sort of fakery and diving weren't obvious enough, almost every time a soccer player gets "injured" and then is stretchered off the field, he almost immediately pops right back up and re-enters the game, obviously not injured. The sport of soccer would be so much better off without that embarrassing nonsense.
@@driver9337 These things are very annoying.
Gilbert is a legend.
I still remember the Jens Voigt crash like it was yesterday. It was just terrible to watch 😨😨😥😥
Richie was lucky he didn’t sustain just major injuries after hitting the wall that fast
What the heck was the policeman doing at nr 5 tho? Shpuld've seen that crash coming since he was looking straight at it.
Lol the rider was looking to ground
A cute girl gave him her camera to take a picture.
Cycle race is difficult sports in world 🤕
raced back in the late 80s , till mid 90s,, on & off road,!!
Missed a few although I don't have to see some of them because some of the riders died in them. Johnny Hoogerland terrible crash into barb wire, Joseba Beloki terrible crash that ended his professional carrier where Armstrong barely escaped in the famous video of him going through the grass in that hairpin and didn't fall. Fabio Cassartelli who died in a horrible crash at the descent of Col de Portet d'Aspet in the Tour de France 1995. Wouter Weylandt who died in a horrible crash at the 3rd stage of the Giro 'd Italia 2011 (descent of Passo del Bocco) with his nr 108 that after his death is never been used anymore in the Giro. That same Giro was originally won by Alberto Contador but he lost his title because of doping so the nr 2 Michele Scarponi took over the title and won that Giro but sadly he also died in a traffic accident in 2017 during a training session 😢 Respect for their family and friends and let's never forget them
MTB-ers : **falls off a cliff** I'm ok
Let’s do it again!
The speed is different you moron. Mtbers with their asses would just as badly be hurt if crashed at these speeds
You're speaking of MTB Riders with full face Helmet, knee protectors and elbow protection, right?
Muhammad Ali you have one thing right. The speed. But the problem is that there is a lot more things on the trail that can injure you besides pavement. Rocks, trees, cliffs, and g force. We also don’t cry about it when we crash. We go back up and do it again.
@@mcfly3510 is same like said MX is not dangerous cuz they wear protection...
Gosto de pedalar e quando vejo esses acidentes dá um pouco de receio.
those were some brutal crashs. head first over ur handle bar, on to ur shoulder at how fast? couldnt imagine.
Looks like we can update this list after stage 1 2021
Number 1 was scary looking but essentially fairly harmless. This could easily have been left off the list.
"fairly harmless" ... GIlbert fractured his knee cap at that crash
#2 Richie Port broken collarbone and pelvis
#3 broken collarbone and sever concussion
#4 broken shoulderblade
Nearly all of the crashes involve huge crashes that took multiple riders out of the race with broken bones, concussions, etc. A crash with 10 or 20 riders going down vs 1 where the rider completed the stage after a crash. Gilbert did pull out of the race but he may be the only rider to have completed the stage after 1 of the top 8 scariest crashes.
A fractured knee cap doesn't even rate on that scale.
If you sprint at 70kmh while looking down , i will applaud when you crash into the barriers.
Haha. I'm laughing so hard my stomach hurts. Buddy is running up and filming the guy twitching on the ground!!
2:50 - Policeman pops back up as if nothing happened!
He was taking a photograph for a fan thats why he never moved...
02:44 now I will use the " do not look forward were you are going" technique ".
Right when I thought Mountain bike crashes were gnarly🤭😮
I really enjoyed it
looks like some of the riders cleats are so tight, when they go over, the bike flips also?? Cavendish...2:05
Teknik Group this is like ski binding, the more advanced you are, the more tight you put cleats on, I guess
Whos here after the crash of 2021
Number 8 - the dude literally just fell off his bike and wiped out a quarter of the field lmao
Oh, the pain...anyone who's smashed up and dragged their bare skin on the pavement knows how miserable falling is, especially at high speeds.
Being a cyclist myself and being in some crashes this is probably the scariest video I've ever seen
0:45 is the worst I have seen
Echo de menos la caída de Beloki y Armstrong escapando por el prado.
the strength of that policeman. Impressive
Straight back up.!!
Hoogerland, Beloki and all Shimano Cars😅
#1 better be the one years ago by the leader who was in front of lance Armstrong because none of these were not come close to it.
The one who felt into a ditch?
Aka Jan Ullrich
What's is place of the transition calls?
I remember watching the Gilbert crash live and having that moment of worry until he appeared coming back over the wall
"Oh, that's a shame" -Seinfeld
Caverndish is just wreckless in the sprints. There’s a reason it’s happened in even more races then these through the sprint
Ok but the policeman at 3:04 jumping over the barrier is funny af...
look, i'm sorry for these poor buggers ... but #1 had me in stitches!! he just disappeared lol
