    I was taught to use a scythe when I was a kid in the 1960's. It did not have the cradle on it though We had a mix of tall oats with rye grass which is shorter. Cut it all in a long smooth stroke and lay it down at the end of the stroke so it can be picked up easy with a pitchfork. Scythe blade needs to be sharpened often.

    Decided to use this as a weapon for one of my characters. It's huge and I've never seen anything like it until now.

      That would be one of the absolute worst weapons to have. It would be completely useless as a weapon.

    I'm surprised that he's cutting so high and I wonder if that's done so the field can be burned off.

      I think they mow the oat stems so high, so that less green weeds end up in the sheaves.
