  • Do you have a floor jack that has lost its ability to lift your car ? Watch this video for a really quick and easy fix that will have your floor jack working good as new. I have fixed many floor jacks with this problem, over time the jack can loose fluid through very slow leaks, a scored piston, or bad square cut seal, however, using the method in this video is a good way to get some mroe milage out of your floor jack.

Amazing how many different "brands" they sold of that same Chinese cheap floor jack. I have one of the first versions sold under the Sears name back in 1989. Now I am looking for the "O" rings and seals. Problem is, nobody seem to sell any such parts for it anymore. So I'll have to cross over to some other name brand to get the parts I need. If yours is leaking oil now, it won't be long 'til you will need to change the seals and "O" rings as well. But nice video to show how adding oil is done anyway. Thumbs Up!

Try and look for a newer model O rings etc, they're basically same

You can buy an O-ring assortment in a box at Harbor Freight and Auto Shops. The other sizes in the box are good for replacing the ones under the fill caps on some brands. Don’t use brake fluid though.

Use a/c o rings. They are the exact same

Brake fluid is designed to scavenge water in the brake system. Should use hydraulic fluid. It's very cheap.

@0:50 there is a plug or smth on the bottom of the picture, it has pale orange color. What is the purpose of this plug? Also i have a small leak on that Jack (it looks exactly the same as the one in this film, 2 Ton Big Red, Pittsburgh) every time I open the Release Valve to lower the car. Even if I open very little, there would be a few drops of oil. If to do a full turn (for release) as recommended, then there would be probably 1-2 tsp of oil on the floor. I always keep a paper towel or rug in that area. Is it some faulty gasket in that valve that should be replaced or it is normal? The Jack works very well, I added oil, bleeded the air, everything is good, but that constant leak ... Thank you for the great film.

Why he used brake fluid in hydraulic jack instead of using hydraulic oil? Its only get worn th e o-ring

There are all kinds of o rings in the brake system of a vehicle, in fact the entire brake system relies on the operation of a square cut seal, so I really don't see why brake fluid can't be used in this application, it's basically the exact same. I have been using this jack non stop and it works everytime.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic, should not have been used here. People commented on O-rings and they are right too.

And yet it's still working just fine.

The term for substances that scavenge water is "hygroscopic". Otherwise you are quite correct.
