Honestly, making your own game engine would be a good way to learn; but in the modern era I think it’s undeniably unnecessary. Many of the industries top game engines are available for free, it just doesn’t make since to make one at this point.
Agreed. But making games from scratch, say in python, javascript, c, c++, c#, etc, is also a good exercise. It's an ok way to learn languages.
