- How to upgrade a dell optiplex 3020 sff cpu. Upgrading from a i3 4160 which has only 2 cores and 4 threads to a xeon e3 1231 v3 with 4 cores and 8 threads.
Worth the $20? Cinebench test included.

Found your videos while searching for the Optiplex 3020 SFF and I've done a similar upgrade from an i3 4170 to Xeon E3-1240v3 myself on my older pc. And wow was it a huge jump. Xeon cost me roughly about $40 USD, but still better than the 4th gen i7s that cost around $100.
Funny thing is that I'm searching for a barebomes Opiplex 3020 SFF to put my i3 4170 in so I can still use it as a backup PC.
Though I'm still split on whether to get an Optiplex 3020 SFF (no processor, ram, storage) or to get more parts to complete enough to build a PC from my spare parts (i3 4170, 240gb SSD, 600w PSU).
I got a 7010 with a xeon 1275v2 and a gtx 1070 and it runs games flawlessly

Do you think it would be worth replacing an i5-3550? The online test results only show 3-5% increase in performance. Didn't think that was worth 20 bucks. Am i wrong??

please can you tell me if you had to upgrade bios i have hp prodesk 490 g2 mt pc with i3 4330 will i have problems with bios last update 10/2014 i tried to upgrade bios but i cant so will i have problems if put that processor in?
I recently just got this computer and I plan on upgrading it I didn’t know it was that easy to change the cpu which once I change windows 10 workstation that can’t activate so I’m gonna install windows 10 pro the right way and change the cpu ssd
Since you added a Xeon CPU, do you have to add an ECC memory? I plan on doing this to my dell 3020 sff to replace the 4790S for a lower wattage for the Haswell-based Xeon E3-1286L V3 is with 65W, hopefully it will run on that system. I only have a Crucial drr3 1600 NON ECC memory though.
I've got this Optiplex 3020 sff with 8 GB DDR3 1600. Do you know if it's necessary to buy only Crucial modules? I'm interested to upgrade mine to 16 GB.

Memory upgrade for Dell OptiPlex 3020:
The best possible memory upgrade for the Dell OptiPlex 3020 is two sticks of 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz each. 1.35V OptiPlex 3020 motherboard has only two DIMM slots - limiting the maximal possible amount of RAM to 16GB.

hey, how are you using your macbook as the display for your optiplex? VNC?
u prob figured it out by now but he's using Microsoft RDP not VNC but basically VNC you can see at 6:24. RDP is actually pretty good even if you're on Linux or Mac. I just use gnome-connections on Linux to connect to headless Win boxes.

I'm very much a newbie here, so maybe I'm missing the obvious. I have the dell optiplex 3020 sff and purchased an Intel Xeon E3-1241V3. I installed it with new thermal paste, but I get no display after install. I tried re-seating it, but no luck. I have the lastest A20 Bios installed. I put back original i3 CPU and system boots up. What am I missing? I don't have a video card installed.
The Xeon doesn’t have integrated graphics so u will need a dedicated display card. The i3 comes with intel integrated that’s why it displays
@@Jack-ed6ch Thanks Jack, I just made a poor (uneducated) choice selecting the E3-1241V3 and should have gone with the iGPU: E3-1245V3 variant. Lesson learned!

Maybe you should upgrade the graphic card too. The performance of Quadro 410 is even worse than integrated HD 4400 of i3-4160.

You could get a 1050ti low profile or a gtx 1650 possibly. Make sure whatever CPU you have wont bottleneck the card though.

Hello friend, you should enable hyper-threading in your BIOS. Dell BIOS don't typically enable hyper-threading by default. In your BIOS go to 'performance' then "Hyper-threading Control' then chose 'Enabled". Windows will then able to see 8 logical cores.
