  • Derek often receives emails asking about the various Saxophones he plays, and also about other equipment matters of interest to all budding saxophonists like reeds and mouthpieces, etc.
In this Movie, Derek can be seen talking about each of the seven different saxophones he regularly plays, giving brief playing demonstrations on several of them.
The movie was shot at Jools Holland's Helicon Mountain Recording Studios, London in February 2008.

Thanks Derek for showing us your instruments. He reminded me of my teacher in the late fifties James Joseph who had a Grafton saxophone. The last time I saw one was in the window of Toot Sweet a saxophone repair shop in Nottingham UK about 20 years ago however that doesn't exist. Anymore. I think Ornette Coleman played one. I like the way you had loyalty to a particular mouthpiece. I think there is too much swapping around these days. Find your mouthpiece and stick to it. - God bless - Bill - UK

I been playing saxophone since I was in 6th grade to now as a freshman in high school. I started off playing the drums when I was in 4th grade if you are wondering why I didn’t start saxophone in my 4th grade band.
I play the alto saxophone in marching band, and I play both the alto and tenor saxophone in concert band.
I would love to get that bright jazzy sound on my saxophone because it sounds really cool! I hope that I will have a giant saxophone collection like this guy has. I only have three saxophones at my house.
I tried playing the baritone saxophone in middle school, but it wasn’t fun because it was too heavy. The worst part was that my pinkie fingers couldn’t reach the pinkie keys.
The alto saxophone is my favorite because it’s the easiest for me. It is easy for me to carry for marching band and it is not too heavy for me.
    I have these saxophones:
    Gold alto (professional)
    Teal alto (student)
    Gold tenor (intermediate)

If you haven't started already, start on alto. It's the easiest to learn, and a great stepping off point for Bari (which I play) because it's in the same key. And also Tenor and Soprano because they are of comparable size.

I saw Derek playing last night, and wonderful he was too. I was particularly taken with his old curved soprano, but the others were all lovely too.

Not only those, you also need a manzello and a stritch for that authentic Rahsaan Roland Kirk vibe

Brilliant vid. Love that Buescher soprano and the Conn alto. My sadly departed tutor Bill Fanning played a Conn. Looked like it had be carved out of solid brass.
