Label REJECTED This Legend's CLASSIC 1989 Record...Ended Up SELLING 11 MILLION!--Professor of Rock

- Coming up, an interview with one of the greatest guitarists of the rock era, Mike Campbell, from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a band that ruled the landscape for over 4 decades. Mike tells the story of Full Moon Fever, an album that he helped write and produce with 2 other legends that they were sure would be a smash… Unfortunately, their label had no such belief. In fact, the album was flat-out rejected. But that didn’t stop another major record label from signing a secret contract with Tom Petty. And it turns out the label was dead wrong as Full Moon Fever became Petty’s biggest seller ever and churned out 3 #1 hits, including today’s feature Running Down a Dream. But this was during the time when Compact Discs were replacing records and tapes so the singer. Ever a traditionalist, Tom left a little message for the CD buyers. Also, the amazing solo fell out in one take... A great interview is coming up next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations where artists give us exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences about their biggest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we have something very special for you. it’s an in-depth interview with rock and roll hall of famer and co-writer, producer, and guitarist Tom Petty and the heartbreakers the great Mike Campbell. today we open the book on the 1989 Tom Petty album Full Moon Fever, his first solo album though all of the heartbreakers played on the record except stan LYNCH..
Tom Petty began to work with Electric Light Orchestra frontman, the legendary Jeff Lynne the album we tentatively call the album songs from the garage. Jeff Lynne would bring a different approach to the band and recording… Lynne would direct the band members and tell them exactly what to play. Their previous collaboratively creative method of arrangement was not needed. Jeff Lynne having years of productions under his belt new exactly what he wanted and needed for this particular record.
He knew the studio inside and out and worked to get the album’s engaging sound… His unique style was to record individual multiple-layered instrumental parts in order to avoid any sonic bleed though with one vocal line at the top without much reverb at all added to the mix. He wanted to bring Tom Petty’s distinct voice to the front of the songs so that it was wholly recognizable
Part of what connected Jeff Lynne to Tom Petty was their love of Del Shannon and Roy Orbison. In fact, Jeff Lynne would say in Warren Zane's excellent Tom Petty Biography that both Del Shannon And Roy Orbison’s voices had a plaintiveness with sadness in some way, like there’s a story in there… I Love that.
Jeff Lynne would discover the same thing in Tom Petty,... - Zábava

As a guy who's been writing song lyrics, poetry and music before I was an adult, this interview spoke to me. When he said, and I paraphrase "Even if you don't become successful, at least you were happy," that hit me. I've played regionally and locally but never got the big time, even though I certainly aspired to when I was younger. Now, I don't even play in bands anymore. I just write and record. Working on album 13 right now which has been a decade and a half in the making. I'm happy to just be making the kind of music I want to make. No labels. No anything. Just writing and playing what I want. I can't imagine not doing it. He's also right about music being a gift. It is. Where does the inspiration come from? I have no idea. It just happens in my head and if my heart agrees, it becomes a song. I mean, music isn't just something you think. One has to feel it as well. Thanks again Adam for another wonderful video. You're doing everything I wish MTV would do. I'm kinda glad you're doing it here though. I can't bring myself to watch MTV anymore. The whole music industry is about selling product instead of marketing art to the masses. It's really not the same.
Amen!
Running Down a Dream is one of those rare songs that could have been a hit in the '70s, '80s, or '90s.... Love the intro!
I agree. That classic guitar riff. Gets me every time!
@I-Love-The-80s
PREACH!! The late 80’s was NOTHING BUT SYNTH…. God, don’t tell my older brother that I’ve talked badly about Synth Pop… His number one musician/creater is Gary Neuman. 🙄
Been my ringtone for several years. Love it!
It could have been a hit today.
@@DanieVargasGary Nueman was different but still amazing. Heard him first in late 70's, loved him as well.
"Attention CD listeners..." oh yes, that was such a great insert.
Thanks for watching!
This was one of my first albums on CD and I loved that part! I now also have it on vinyl, and it doesn't seem right without that!
cracked me up every time.
I have it on CD!
I'm glad they didn't take it out on streaming. I still enjoy hearing it
"A good driving song..." Indeed! The perfect road trip album. Goes with me to this day.
One of the things that you do for all of us, Adam, is bring back to our forefront all of the great musicians that have gone to the next transition.
Great interview, great upload, thanks , Adam....
Thanks for watching!
Don't you just love it when a label refuses to back an artist only to lose out when the song is a success? What a great extra Tom threw in between sides 1 and 2 LOL...Mike is such a great guitar player and that was an awesome interview. I'm so glad he's still going strong. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁
Thanks Gio! How are things in your parts?
Some music executives must have been dropped on their heads if they didn't recognize this hit! Reminds me of Petty's lyrics:
His leather jacket had chains that would jingle
They both met movie stars, partied and mingled
*Their A&R man said, "I don't hear a single"*
The future was wide open...
@@ProfessorofRock Battling a bug right now. I wish the warm weather would start.
Ottawa, a country’s capital. Cheers Gio 🍻
College when this came out and me and my roommate listen to this to the point where we wore through two copies of it .
I saw Tom Petty play a dive bar in Gainesville back in the day. I loved his voice then and he sure didn't disappoint in the future. Sorely missed by me today.
Sorely... I agree. What'd he play...song wise?
@@ProfessorofRock Sorry to say I don't remember. Age is taking its toll!
Mike rocks. He looks like if Brian May and Tom Petty melded, it'd be Mike Campbell.
He has the essence of Tom... It's pretty cool!
Good observation! Maybe a side of Captain Beefheart too... in looks, not musically of course.😉
The personalities!
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers could take their dogs for a walk and come back with a platinum record... that's how good they are (were ..RIP Tom). I love Running Down A Dream and Free Falling. I could sing every single word to all of their songs even if I get Alzheimer's and can't remember anything else. ❤ Great show Professor, as always!!
That was a cool interview Professor!! Thanks!🤘🔥
Thanks Brent. Did you ever get to see hime live?
@@ProfessorofRock Unfortunately no!
I have always figured that Tom did a community service for telling us to turn on the cruise control as I would usually be speeding by that point in the song!👍👍
Ha ha.!
The message hidden in the pregap is something that I miss from the CD era.
Heck, there are tracks that were hidden before track one in some albums that are still not available on streaming because it's not about the product, it's about the sale of the product.
I know what you mean!
I have that CD and the message is on it!
A little gamble can go a long way. This is one of my favourite rock songs, and luckily someone took a chance on it.
Fantastic song.
My sister married a fella from Lake City, Florida in the 80's and I went with him to get a bag one time...we went to Gainesville to get it. Well, as it turned out, Tom Petty and my brother in law had the same weed dealer! He was there getting a sack too! That's my favorite "celebrity brush" story...I've smoked some of the same stuff Tom Petty did! And yes, it was GOOD! It was bright green, compact and was loaded with little red and white hairs. Lol! I've got stories about this one big bud we got there in particular...it started with us getting off of the exit to go to McDonald's on the trip back home to Alabama. We then got back on the interstate and had driven 60 miles back in the wrong direction before we realized we were seeing palm trees again! Every time I see Tom Petty, I think of Gainesville Green!
what a killer story!! and you are correct about the gainesville green. it is world famous.best wishes

Tom and Jeff hit lightning in a bottle with Full Moon Fever. It really is a classic. Rest well, Tom.
Tom Petty and all his band each a national treasure.
Running Down a Dream always gives me a natutal high just by listening to it. Awesome song!!!
Thanks for sharing.
This was a phenomenal album. Petty always seemed to have an intuition for these things. He's a legend that's sorely missed.

Yes indeed. Perfect all the way through.
Running Down A Dream was one of those great fast driving songs. TP had a few of those.
You're right. It's on my YEEHAWWW! playlist.
Full Moon Fever was one of the first CDs I had and I'm glad I bought it. Not a bad song from the album.
A classic through and through.
If he didn't release Southern Accents, not a bad song from his career!
Such a gem.
The record companies are hoping to own a song for pennies, to make millions. Tom Petty -- pure gold!
Indeed.
I mean... not a bad business idea!
@@nedhorner Yeah, I know the record companies are risking a lot of resources, but everyone should win, or at least be satisfied in the transaction. So many great musicians living broke. (Jim Croce comes to mind). Sometimes self-inflicted, I know…
Yup!
One of my favorite songs of freedom. I had just gotten out of a terrible marriage and was on my way to see my family in Omaha after years of being kept from them. Somewhere along I-76, there's a wedding ring that I flung out the window while listening to this song!!! Best feeling ever!!!
Great to see you interview Mike!
The opening riff in Running Down a Dream is as interconnected with ones foot smashing the gas pedal as a grimace is to that last sip of cold coffee
RIP Tom. You're a legend. Musicians and singers of your caliber are sorely missed, especially now!! ♥️
We need him more than ever.
Such an immortal figure.
"Full Moon Fever" gave me solace when my Mom died in 1989.
The album took me on a journey, musically, and was a salve of sorts.
Thanks for this video, and thanks to Tom, Mike, Jeff, and to the Heartbreakers for the album.
Such a well produced album, its immaculate 💎
Excellent interview with a very creative musician! He definitely "gifted"
YEs sir!
Runnin down a Dream. One of my all time favorites!
I gotta say…I guessed the album within two seconds. “Full Moon Fever” (I still have my original on vinyl) is one of my favorites of all time. The song “Zombie Zoo” was my jam as a freshman in high school.
Mike Campbell comes across as such a cool guy in your interviews. I remember this album well as it kept me company when I had to commute an hour commute with one job. I kind of had the feeling that work was skowing down and didn't have legs so was feeling down. This album kept me going
Glad you enjoyed it!

Will this post?
What an amazing song, with INCREDIBLE hooks! When we finally reach the unforgettable "OOH OOH OOH" refrain with the oh-so-satisfying guitar bending licks screaming out at the end, the only disappointing thing about it is that ...it has to end now. You want to hear more, but you're also aware that it is that "leaving you wanting more" yearning in your heart that makes the ending SO VERY COMPELLING!
THIS SONG IS INDEED, ONE FOR THE BOOKS!

@@mbgrafix That's weird. It's a great comment!
The band Queen was told by their record label that Bohemian Rhapsody was a terrible idea, so they left the record label and we all know the rest of the story.
Whoever rejected such an amazing album had no business being in the music business.R.I.P., Tom. (and that CD listeners message still makes me smile)
Love Tom Petty. I regret i never got to see him live.
Something that reverberates through many of your videos is the reoccurring business of how record labels treat the bands and artists who actually provide them with their income. Tom Petty was not alone here by a long shot. I'll bet that that record label regrets rejecting that album, to this day.
Strange, it just occurred to me that this same kind of mind set may be behind many bands and artists being snubbed by "The Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame.
Tom said; "I won't back down". We are all blessed because he didn't. ;-)
He NEVER did!
And we are all better for it.
Jeff Lynne is easily the greatest both musician & producer ever! Then put him Petty & “The Heartbreakers” 🤯 🤘! Runnin Down & the video is definitely one of my favorites of theirs! “Anytime Jeff looks over his glasses. . .”, priceless quote!!
Couldn't agree more!
He and Ton fit together perfectly.
Soundtrack for my last year of college! So glad Tom & Mike got mixed in with Jeff & his production skills! The two TP&Heartbreakers albums Jeff co-produced are quite excellent, too!
Wow, thx POR...totally buying Mike's album. Wouldn't have known it existed w/o this interview.
Love love love Runnin Down a Dream. My fav TP song. Especially love the guitar outtro. Go on for a little bit? It could go on forever and I would be very happy. Iconic video as well.
Excellent interview! Excellent Album, excellent single! Fascinating. Thanks.
Man we are losing so many greats, Petty, Bowie, Peart, Betts, Frye, Mardonnes, props to you Prof for keeping these greats alive in our hearts!
Wonderful information as usual, Professor. Again, thank you!
I love Tom , Mike - and the Heartbreakers- thank u for the interview-
I always love any story that tells us of a song that was written or engineered so quickly and then became a classic
Tom Petty is my absolute favorite! A consummate artist! Writes, plays, and sings his stuff. I miss his artistry and only imagine what he would have been doing now.
Three of my favourite ever songs on that album.
Sometimes the record exec is right. How many have we heard where the band didn't like the song, but an exec insisted that it be a single, and it was a hit. Sometimes they are wrong, like today's song. With artists like Petty and Lynne, you have to trust them.
I think they are wrong more often than right from what I've heard.
@ProfessorofRock Sometimes it's disagreeing band mates, sometimes record company executives and the band. Thank goodness most of the time, great music wins out one way or another. The rest of the time POR and fans just have to dig for the gold. How many times has a throw away song got put on an album just as a "filler" track? Then end up a hit? POR, got any idea how many?
Yep. They are the true geniuses.
Suggestion. 4th of july is coming soon. David Lee Roth-Yankee Rose
Full moon fever,35 years later still rocks and caps off an amazing decade for Tom Petty starting off a decade earlier with damn the torpedoes and ending the 80s with the traveling wilburys and full moon fever tom had an amazing run of albums in the 80s
I agree. Love the Wilburys...Such an amazing time. What's your favorite track on Full Moon Fever?
I am a proud owner of Full Moon Fever on CD!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 that's definitely a classic but my two favorite Tom Petty albums from the 80s are 1982s long after dark and the totally underrated 1987 let me up(I've had enough) long after dark to me is a very fast furious and angry rock album and some of my all time favorite Tom Petty songs such as straight into darkness, finding out we stand a chance a d between two worlds let me up is almost foreshadowing what he would be doing with the wilburys and full moon fever it's a fun album and Tom definitely has a gift for inserting very humorous lyrics in his music
This is by far my favorite Tom Petty CD. I ran right out and bought it after hearing Free Fallin'. I still listen to it over and over, and love every song on it. Jeff Lynne is a genius IMO, and it really shows on this album. What Mike Campbell said about Runnin' Down A Dream being a good driving song is so true!
Shows you what tone deaf idiots work at MCA.
Free Fallin’ hooked me in too!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have got to be one of the best bands ever to chart.
I agree. They are sorely missed.
Saturday, January 12, 1980 Kiel Opera House St. Louis, Missouri - I was there - my Sophomore year of college. Still consider it one of the best concerts ever. Thanks for what you do Mike. and thanks for this interview
Tom Petty is one of those artists I didn't care for in his prime but absolutely love and admire now. So many great songs and the Heartbreakers are a stellar band.
I loved the statement 'All we cared about was the music'. This is what makes great bands what they are, and what is missing in the music today.
Such a great statement. Totally agree that it's what's missing in the music of today. At least in pop music these days. Some indie bands are still doing it for the music and it shows.
That's not missing in the music today in the slightest, and to say so is admitting you just don't listen to a lot of music. Empty suit, soulless, corporate assholes have existed in the era of recorded music since the very beginning. The internet has completely stripped the veneer of the music world. Musicians that care about the music and have something to say can now say it without Tin Pan Alley saying "eh, can you make it sound more like Rubber Ball by Bobby Vee? That's what people want to hear."
What's actually, legitimately missing in the music world today are people willing to give musicians their ear. What's actually, legitimately missing in the music world today are people that look past what is being shoveled down our throats by the people able to do so. There is SO MUCH out there that is good, so many artists that "care about the music", and so many things worth connecting to and spending your time with.
It's just... so lame to think otherwise.
Yes! Because it brings people together.
I remember when Tom Petty played at the Super Bowl halftime and his walk off song was Running Down a Dream.
Those were the days!
I didn't know he played at a Super Bowl halftime show! I don't watch football, and most entertainers they have at the Super Bowl are not my cuppa tea. Thanks! I'll have to look up Petty's performance, the way I watch the compilations of Super Bowl commercials. Isn't CZcams great for that?☺
What year was that?
@@TomTester-ey1rt 2008. You should be able to find it on CZcams
That was a dope halftime show.
Mike Campbell also did the amazing and memorable riffs in Don Henley's Boys of Summer adding an incredible mood to an already incredible song....great stuff.
I clearly remember traveling down from New York City to Batimore in Oct. 2003 with my mentor's cousin the one time I heard *Full Moon Fever.* The cousin's husband had it on cassette, and they popped it in on side 2. That means it kicked off with Petty's Byrds cover, "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" and concluded with "Running Down a Dream". I enjoyed hearing it in the tape format, but it would've been worth hearing the CD version, only for that voice-over from Petty.
Mike in his interview segments reminds me of Ace Frehley. That's only meant as a compliment.
Thanks Eric! Ya that version with Tom's VO is classic!
The CD version can’t be beat!
An unbelievable album, pure masterpiece!
This is my favorite album from Tom Petty. Yer So Bad needs to be Number 1 In Our Hearts.
Such a humble guy. Very refreshing and great music
I was lucky enough to catch Tom Petty's final Toronto show in 2017. He was gone less than 3 months later.
I know that everyone thinks it's about drugs, but I'm convinced that Mary Jane's Last Dance is a metaphor for his animosity with MCA. ("Last song for MCA... one more track to get out of the contract") He didn't like being forced to make fans buy the greatest hits CD for one new song and figured he'd give them a throwaway. (He was saving his best stuff for his first album on Warners!)
I was already a fan of Tom Petty before Full Moon Fever, but that album really seal the deal for me. I listen to Tom Petty Radio for hours and hours each month. I am sad that I never got the chance to see him live.
Adam, thanks for such a great interview. I really appreciate your channel. I watch it daily while on the treadmill or my stationary bike.
I can't believe it will be 7 years this October that we lost Tom Petty. I remember when I was a kid my parents would play Tom Petty's album "Long after dark" when it came out and one of the songs that I really did like was "You got lucky". Then I remember watching it on MTV, and it freaked me out a little bit because as a kid, I thought that the band was on Mars driving around in a car that Tesla would make nowadays with a touch of steampunk. R.I.P. Tom Petty
Thanks!
It feels like it was just yesterday.
One of the things I’ve always loved about Tom was that he was a storyteller. One of a rare breed that fell into the mold, if not musically philosophically, with Croce, Denver, Dylan, Lighfoot, etc. Music that I could see the story unfold in my mind as I listened. Artists like that are truly a treasure. RIP Tom 😞
I have always enjoyed tom petty music, and I really enjoy your Xiamen l channel, I have never commented on anything but today I have to, cause you just turned me onto a new song(state of mind) which means I will have to check out their music, thank you
I remember listening to the CD for the first time and being pleasantly surprised by Tom's message. What irony when I taped it for a friend and I left it on Side A for him. :)
I remember distinctly I had bought the cassette after the Won't Back Down hit the airwaves.
I popped it into the walkman with decent headphones.
Won't back down . Okay
Then, Freefalling.
My hairs stood up and when he went up to the chorus I almost shit myself.
Got on phone to my bandmate and writing partner and played it to him headphone to telephone.

"Hello CD listeners!" Something that got lost in the transition to CDs, was the idea of dividing up an album up into two parts... like two acts of a play... how that affected setting the running order and how it affected your experience of the album. "Hello CD Listeners" was the intermission that subdivided the album into Act 1 and Act 2 for people listening on CD.
I wonder how he would have handled 8-tracks..........

I've loved Tom Petty and especially Mike Campbell's guitar playing since I discovered them via Full Moon Fever as a 14/15 year old in 1989. I still remember the first time I came across the documentary Runnin' Down A Dream probably 15 years ago and couldn't believe the runtime! Over 4 hours! Appropriate that Petty identified with Shannon and Orbison. Those two had a melancholy singer songwriter style that audiences were not ready for until they were gone from the scene.
