    During our recent visit to the @pivotcyclesusa HQ for the Switchblade launch, we were able to get a behind the scenes look at the new prototype Phoenix DH bike frame and what all goes into its production. Chris Cocalis and crew provide a brief rundown on what goes into making such a bike, from the lug machining to the carbon layup to fitting each piece during the 3 week long process.

    Chris, if I had 20k, I’d pay it. It’s that beautiful. Only the Atherton comes close. Just jaw dropping. 😮

      Then go buy an Atherton AM.200. It's way "cheaper", also a 6-bar and even has titanium 😉

      Sorry Robot _ I mean Atherton has the the tech, the sizing, and Ti and AM and it’s cheaper - there was also just a little too much “fittted by hand “ which in a hitec cnc’d am world with robot (again) assembly bit too analog in a digital world. And as for the square tubes and FEA???

    design notes borrowed from Brooklyn Machine Works ?

    • @bushnut8305
      @bushnut8305 Před 2 měsíci

      very close but Brooklyn had a 8spd Shimano hub in the frame. with the jack shaft chain running to a single speed hub. all the shifting was done at the high pivot location.

    This stuff is way over my head ,I just think that bikes are meant to be fairly simple beasts.I don’t disagree with progress but it’s a bike not the space shuttle.Keep it simple,one chain is enough.

    • @bikesnblades6737
      @bikesnblades6737 Před 2 měsíci

      In a way they are doing just that. By the looks of it, you can expect the small chain to live for a very long time without needing to be replaced. And then there's the regular chain, which functions as usual. The alternative is the usual high pivot design which still requires two chains, but they're connected to create the necessary length. It also has to go around the idler and creates unnecessary stress on that part. So really while at first glance the one chain solution seems simpler, it's really not. Of course a regular non high pivot design is still more simple than both, but then again, you'd lose out on the potential performance.
      Having owned a high pivot idler design before, I think this is a good solution to the common problems associated with them and actually makes for more reasonable system for the endconsumer.

    @miyui9269 Před 2 měsíci

    for downhill bike, gearbox would be the best. you can always have just one chain connected directly to the gearbox on a high pivot system.
    you'll also get lighter unsprung weight on the rear wheel. if pivot is experimenting, they should look the other way, to the gear box design.

    sure glad its prototype as aluminum and carbon fiber do not work together..long galvanic corrosion is very bad

      glass microspheres are in the bond line so there is no carbon touching the ally.

  • @TheBikerboy3
    @TheBikerboy3 Před 2 měsíci +3

    What is the point of doing this? There seems to be very little or no benefit (apart from looking cool), plus dangerous as seen with Bernard Kerr's latest run where it looked like the tube(s) either snapped due to stress concentration where the lug meats the tube, (Basic engineering no no for design) or the tubes slid out of the lug, hard to tell from the race run video feed.

    These bikes are like Indy cars made to race & need a lot of service & parts are constantly replaced. The more complicated & the more picots & moving parts would be a nightmare for the average person.
