"I'm a time traveler, I point and laugh at archeologists"

“And do people ever punch you in the face when you do that?”
"Not as of yet. No."
"Then I'll be the first. En garde!!"

These two episodes followed by Midnight was psychological abuse by the writers and I absolutely love it. Brilliant horror story telling
Totally agree + I'd add Blink. That trilogy untouchable
And then Midnight was followed by Turn Left. Oh, poor Donna really suffered in the tail end of Series 4.
"Where am I in the future?" River's face gets me every time :'(
I never get why noone can comprehend the idea that some people just have enough and go home. It's not like everyone is murdered horribly. It's a bit of false tension but it's nice to see this episode with the Matt Smith and Capaldi context.
She gives that face because she knows that his 13th incarnation is a disgrace to doctor who
@@bigboymedia453 yeeess! A total disgrace... I mean, why did they even do that? For the ratings? Darn...
BigBoy Media I personally disagree
12th doctor is more of a disgrace than 13th. The doctor's supposed to be witty, not grumpy.
Daleks, aim for the eyestalk.
Sontarans, back of the neck.
Vashta Nerada... Run.
Thanos, aim for the head.
Such a chilling statement
@@mrsaxman3602 I've always found that line paradoxical. The Doctor just straight up advocated for murdering two other species when he didn't carry a gun during the Time War. I don't think he's ever even shot a Dalek, and he has plenty of good reasons to hate them.
Tantalus010 I can see how that is paradoxical, yet those species he mentions you can’t really negotiate with, he tried with the daleks time and again and they either don’t listen or it gets twisted into something horrible. Sontarans aren’t much better as their entire existence is war. Yet remember hitting them in the back of the next doesn’t kill them but merely knocks them out if I recall. Think what he was trying to say though was that they have no weakness, there’s no way to fight them - all you can do is RUN!
Weeping Angels, don't blink.
This episode single handedly made me just that *extra* bit more cautious when going out into the dark...
Thanks BBC, now i can't go outside, OR go to a nursery with statues...
addamcor i was terrified of the dark for a month after watching this episode
Yes and thank you BBC for making us pay to watch TV
Oh sweetie theres always midnight
Same
I actually refused to watch the sequel to this episode. I was too terrified
Didn't expect Dr Moon to be that honnest at 1:08. And her reaction is priceless, she's like "Dude aren't you supposed to help me ? That's not helping ! not al all !!!"
He looks like a British version of Morpheus.
That girl was a very good actress. Her face clearly showed that she understood the magnitude of what he was asking her to do and she was very much afraid that she would fail.
AFriendlyBloke holy shit you’re right
Moffat revealed recently that Doctor Moon was a future Doctor that River saved just the same way the Tenth Doctor saved her.
Question is why would you tell a child that her or his nightmares are real. That bad enough as it is.
One of the best episodes ever, proves that Moffat was and still is a great writer when it comes to single episodes.
12345 6789 This is a two parter.
12345 6789 This two parter definitely is one of the best episodes in Doctor who. I hate it when people blame Moffat for everything after series 5. He has written amazing episodes and the story of River Song that goes all the way from series 4 to 9 is absolutely brilliant.
He's a good writer but in my opinion he's not a good director. That's the issue.
How is this one of the best episodes ever? It's terrible
JustSomeRandomGuy Online Believe it or not we don't all have the same opinions.
River in this part you just want to hug her. it's the worst day of her life the day she has dreaded since she got that little blue book
From what I remember she didn’t realize the Doctor knew when she died until she actually chose to take his place and die. Or do you mean the day she runs into an incarnation of the Doctor that doesn’t know her? I can see how that would be tragic (the person you love most having no idea who you are).
@@vullord666 Imagine the person you love most. You spent years of your life with them. You have good and bad memories with them but they are something you cherish the most. One day out of nowhere they don't even recognize you like you are just some stranger walking by
This is also the last time she sees him
@@vullord666 I think she had an idea, given that her diary was running out (or had run out) of pages
She did have an idea it was coming. Christmas special with twelve. I kept it simple but could be Spoilers ahead.
Husbands of River Song. She talked about it at the end of the episode. Her diary almost full and reading/hearing rumors about the Towers and her and the Doctor. She was scared until the Doctor calmed her down and gave her time with him. 24 years if I remember correctly. She didn’t know details about the library or anything else, but she knew her time was running out with the Doctor.
He names two of his biggest enemies and tells you how to beat them. Then he says for the Vashta Nerada, you just run. That’s how you compare how deadly they are, right after a demonstration in miniature form. Really makes you think no one is going to live.
Luckily, they were all saved.
And some of them were even reloaded afterward.
Sontarans...I wouldn't call his biggest enemies. They're not even time sensitive like Cybermen or Autons.
To me, it's weird that he told River specifically how to kill those two species considering that he doesn't carry a gun himself. It's a very strange thing to say for a person who supposedly abhors violence.
@@Tantalus010
He was just naming aggressive species he knows have weaknesses. He'd only recently dealt with Sontarans and exploited that weakness a couple times and Daleks... well he's probably killed more of them than anyone else.
@@professionalmemeenthusiast2117 All of them, even.
"Every shadow?"
"Nooo...
...but any shadow"
Chills, man. What great writing
I don't get it. What does that mean?
It means that not every shadow is a vashta nerada, but it can be any one of those shadows.
@@rizkydewansyah6791 not every shadow is a vashta nerada. It can be any shadow however meaning you don't know which one
@@rizkydewansyah6791 It means the creature isn't everywhere, it is possible to safely walk through the shadows but you wouldn't know if you were walking into a Vashta Nerda swarm since they could be anywhere in those shadows

"The days are coming when I'll look into that man's eyes, and he won't have a clue who I am. I think it will kill me."
"He looks right through me and it shouldn't kill me, but it does."
what makes that both sadder and stranger is the doctor timeline wise felt that first, sure we see that river reacts first but remember this is the last version of river meeting the earliest doctor she met meaning she spent the night on durillium (Idk how to spell it) with the 12th doctor and therefor when the 12th doctor (capaldi) met river and she didn't recognize him he then knew what she felt the day he met her.
@@ZUnknownFox I've never thought of it in that way. The 12th Docotr must feel invisible to River at the time considering she knows how the regeneration cycle works and that he was on his last one until "something happened"
What are you TALKING about? DO you know him or DON'T you?
Donna ain't got no time for your cryptic narcissism
@@boytechnichian You should listen to a wizard.
@@boytechnichian Tbh River kinda needs to be cryptic. Because then Donna started asking questions about her own future (as anyone would).
I really wish they would revisit the vashta nerada
Trust me mate, you don't. With the current writers we have now, the vashta nerada would be utterly ruined.
Jamie theakston is one of the best writers in new who. I think he would do an existing villain like the vashta nerada some justice. Plus there is a few other writers that wouldn't do bad.
Caduex Charles
I think they are hard to write about. It basically "the shadows kill you" and thats it. It would need a skilled writer not to be repeatative
Too deadly for Moffat, people actually die
@@ElPatrondel you do realize they are a lot of the same people... Right?
I love this episode not only because of the Vashta Nerada but we also get to meet Prof. River Song Archaeologist who's story spans a lot of future seasons... RIP Professor River Song
jhN322 well the way she devolved here meant we were stuck with that
Spencer C the doctor forgets. Companions forgive.
Plot twist she is saved under new new York and that's what novice hame never got to tell the doctor before she died of old age
*whose story
who's = who + is
This is what Moffat can do. Better as a standard writer than a head writer in my opinion.
Widdums7 agreed
He just wasn’t good at dragging deaths and red herrings around in a series-span.... but he sure as hell has a creative mind when it came to singular stories.
He did also made a complete timeline with River Song that spanned multiple episodes not in fully the correct order.
Yep, definitely.
I love him as a showrunner too
Was Donna being intentionally dense in this scene? River laid it out pretty simply.
Lmao, ikr? Even if it wasn't to clear, she travels with a time traveler and River talks about him like its history. PUT 2 AND 2 TOGETHER
Yeah that really irritated me
Look up what a foil is
Donna IS dense😂
Donna (and most companions) are meant to be just a bit dense. They're the substitutes for us, the audience. They're meant to ask the questions that help us figure out what all that technobabble really means.
2:28 that “DON-NAAA” gets me everytime 😂
“Daleks, aim for the eye stalk. Sontarans, back of the neck... Vashta Narada... Run. Just run.”
The little girl’s face when the doctor moon tells her that her nightmares a real always makes me laugh.
I love the idea of a child psychologist just being like “yeh everything you’re afraid of is real”
*nightmares are real
*Yeah, everything
3:40-3:45 And with one sentence Steven Moffat reignited my fear of the dark
Then right after that.
"Every shadow?"
"No, but ANY shadow."
Literally not everyone comes back out of the dark
Just tell me I wasn't the only one who slept with their lights on the night I watched this.
1:08 sounds like an early version of the "I am The Doctor" theme, It's amazing to hear a variation of that theme as early as Series 4! :D
I heard that too! Took me by surprise
Jamesie Hodge 10s hour is over, 11 emerges
Yeah, it makes we wonder if the 13th Doctor's theme is hidden somewhere on the Series 10 soundtrack.
I kind of doubt it, because Gold is leaving with Moffat, but oh well...
it does, doesn't it.
Yes unfortunately seems so. However it’s not 100% confirmed yet and at the time of writing that comment there was no indication, just rumours, however now it seems there are very strong rumours. As for 12s theme being hidden in earlier soundtracks, have a listen to Westminster Bridge ;)
My head canon goes like this .. When you get a sudden sharp painful itch that lasts only a brief moment .. That is the Vashta Nerada taking a bite out of you.
Oooo
Vashta Nerada had potential to be as iconic as the Weeping Angels.
We've been waiting for this one. Definitely one of the most interesting foes in the series.
The Cypher But they have been heard in "Classic Doctors, New Monsters" against Tom Baker and Paul McGann. The bunch Paul McGann fought were genetically engineered to be weapons in the Time War.
Ilias A. Most interesting i the tv show considering they are the only monsters we can't see. Makes it even more real and i love that.
The Cypher or flatline
"You're just talking rubbish, do you know him or don't you?" Ha-ha! I've forgotten how Donna Noble was the best companion, literally, ever.
U know in this episode when the doctor meets river she gets out her diary and says have we done the crash at the bizantium they and that's the episode they did like 3 years later with mat smith the crash at the bizantium with the weeping angles
Yes and also weeping angels as well.
This is the best two part story on Doctor Who, ever. Absolutely perfect. Human Nature/Family of Blood, and World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls are also amazing.
pjgs Sorry but Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit?
Sindiel Taylor what do you mean by ‘sorry?’
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances?
My top 5 two parters in Doctor Who
1) Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
2) Human Nature/The Family of Blood
3) World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls
4) The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
5) The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
Also:
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday
The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky
The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon
Honestly I think the vashta narada is the scariest doctor who villain. Just the way the doctor describes it. “They normally live off roadkill, but sometimes people go missing. Not everyone comes back from the dark.”
That description is a terrifying way to explain a villain, and that they live on earth, but only in small clusters, I don’t know why, but that just seems so eerie to me.
Love how he flips the flashlight for no reason other than dramatic effect
Knowing what is to come, makes this scene even more devastating. I love the character River Song.
"Why don't you know me? Where am I in the future?"
River's face says it all. She knows that Donna won't be in the Doctor's future.
Hindsight makes this devastating. Donna was completely unaware of her inevitable heartbreaking departure.
River Song, she’s new and yet it seems like we’ve known her for years. Then we learned about River Song. She’s brilliant.
“Dalek, attack the stalk, Sontarans, attack the back of the neck. Vashta Nerata, Run.”
Would a flamethrower suffice?
You can't destroy a shadow. If the doctor says run, you run.
A flamethrower would only hold them back temporarily because of light you cant kill darkness
@@Gamer010001 would it? he even mentioned they float in sun beams. so would the light hold them back?
@@divinityquartz3428 sun beams yeah a blast of hot fire? No
@@divinityquartz3428 if they float in sun beams they probably are used to warm environments so there weakness: cold
River song: "hi I'm from your future"
Literal time travellers: "Duhhhh duhhrrrr i dont get it. Durrr"
Donna's been travelling with him for the shortest time of any major partner.
And River Song's story is complicated, to say the least. Donna would have expected a time traveller to travel in a similar manner to the Doctor, but she doesn't - and she's running a whole set of companions that make her seem very unlike him.
If you started watching from the start of series 4, would you have got it quicker than her? I doubt it.
I miss the Doctor - Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, Capaldi. They all left us too soon.
0:52 Rose and the Wolf in the background though
Hey! Who turned off the lights????
Sebastian Stock Me. Sorry.
Hey! Who turned *OUT* the lights?
No, seriously! Turn them back on!
“Excuse me, but may the person who deactivated the light sources identify themselves?”
Why do you have two shadows
Is it bad that whenever it’s dark I literally say aloud:
*”Hey, who turned out the lights?”*
Even if no one will understand the reference 😂
I did this in a movie theater once. There were a bunch of screams and someone said, Run! Best part of the movie
2:45 What's interesting is, the 60th could completely find a way to undo Donna's mindwipe with her surviving, and it'd work without affecting River's knowledge, because the Doctor's gone through his entire time with River now.
At the end of the episode the Doctor and Donna looked at River's diary, which represented the Doctor's future. Now the next time the Doctor sees Donna, he could hold that diary and say it represents his distant past.
Be careful of the dark... The Vashta Nerada are on Earth with us.
Funny because there's this pretty dark shadow in my room which is kinda bothering me since its starting to-
this episode gave me nightmares and made me scared of the dark for a good solid month before i got over it

Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead - two of my favorite 10th Doctor episodes and the scariness of the Vashta Narada was a big part of that. :)
1:34 The Doctor has discovered the camera
This is one of my favourites episodes, I love the Vashta Nerada and River Song. 😍
I think I find it more unsettling that Vashta Nerada live on earth... That would be awful if they were real.
Why do you think they are not?
Why? I think it's super cool! An alien species that exists harmoniously across the galaxy in every environment - ours included - without us ever realizing it. And like the Doctor said, they're usually harmless in the population amounts that exist on Earth, I mean there's clearly a reason you didn't know about it. ;P
People do vanish without a trace. Missing 411.
Not everyone comes back out of the dark.
Normally Vashta Nerada on Earth live on roadkill
BRILLIANT episode!
I love the 10th Doctor and River Song together
I can't believe soon there will be no Peter Capaldi reminding me to subscribe tothe official doctor who youtube channel :C

So much for a therapist Dr. Moon. Sheesh, if you're gonna break the news, make it less harsh.
Had to study this episode for two months. Best months ever
Vashta Nerada is an awesome sounding name
Imagine Capaldi having got the message properly and being here instead...
The whole point is he couldn't interfere. This was the end of her story.
12 knows because 10 was here, but he couldn't do anything cuz paradox.
There’s a picture of a wolf and a blonde girl in Cal’s house... that little detail is great and I love how they scattered rose around the season leading up to her coming back
Fun Fact: The actor for Doctor Moon, Colin Salmon, was originally intended to be a future incarnation of the Doctor. The original story would've been that River saw the Doctor's 45th incarnation die in battle, who was then uploaded to the Library.
I'd love to see Colin Salmon as the Doctor proper, one of my favourite actors.
I'm glad they scrapped that storyline but I think he could make a good doctor.
"Every shadow?"
"No...but A N Y shadow"
....yeah that's ominous
This is it. The episodes that scarred me and reinforced my fear of the dark. Kids in the 70s were scared of daleks I had air piranha.
2:28 „do you know him or don’t y…“ „donnAA“ Always gets me
Definitely one of the best DW 2-parters for Halloween eps! And when he says they're everywhere, it just made me think of all those times when you feel some itching or similar sensation all over your body...and thinking it's the Vashta Nerada trying to devour you, but in such tiny amounts, it doesn't actually harm you.
one of the best two-parters to this day
NOOO I MISS DAVID TENNANT!!!!
Now I know river songs whole backstory it makes this whole episode way more interesting and heartbreaking😭😭😭❤️
I love that even with all her knowledge from her life with and without 11, 10 can still teach her, show just how knowledgeable the doctor is

One of my favorite episodes. Concept, execution, favorite companion, heartbroken River. It's just great!!
(I named my Dark Eldar mandrakes from 40k the Vashta Nerada - it seemed fitting)
One of the best Episodes.

It gets way more heartbreaking after "The Husbands of River Song". :'( :'(
The episode that set up so so much and all of it terrifying and sad, and we had no idea the ride we were put on.
Probably my favorite episode of all time, remember watching this with my mom
The Vashta Nerada would have to living partially in another dimension for the this to be possible. The Doctor needs to use all the resources of the TARDIS to find where they are hiding to contain or eliminate their threat.
Why? They are just as alive as a lion or a human. Just happens they ran into a big hungry pck of them
That is my favourite episode of the series
My favorite episodes in the series. The Vashta Nerada are such a chilling enemy. Right up there with the Weeping Angels for me. I really wish they'd bring them back for another horror episode.

The Vashta Nerada is the scariest Doctor Who monster ever. Seriously I couldn’t sleep after watching ‘Silence in the library’.
It’s always the monsters you can’t see that scare you the most.
Run. Just run.
Given that Christmas Special is coming up It'd be super awesome if the Doctor Who channel uploaded some clips from "An adventure in space at time"... Particularly the scene where Hartnell is grumpy on set and mumbles/forgets his lines. PS: We need that Moffat to Chibnall regeneration scene... Make it happen!
1:08 One of the best scenes of the show--it flips expectations so well.
"the real world is a lie"
maybe it's just the glasses but he feels like the bloke in the matrix when he says that
That girl looks like a young Clara
I can't think of a Good User Name CAL... Clara...
There is a very creepy theory out there (that is scarily plausible), listing how Clara and CAL could be the same person.
Loki Laufeyson VII The thing is Clara went in the doctors timestream to save him which makes this theory spooky. However, River Song saves the Doctor here so i'm not too sure about this theory. Great point though.
There was echo Clara in the library too
CRACKING PLUR Oswin and CAL both had imaginary worlds for each other, and, like you said, Clara entered the Doctor's timestream, so it is perfectly plausible...
Just highly unlikely.
The person casting the girls and young women must prefer that face type.
This was always a classic episode for me as a kid. I always dreamed of being that girl and having a library in my head 😂
3:31 the guy who dies first was right next the the swarm and itches at his suit. Only just noticed that.
Hands down the scariest monster in all sci fi I still get chills thinking about this.
3:04 I want some chicken now.
So what I'm getting from what The Doctor said about these Vashta Nerada is that unlike most of his enemies these things are invincible
The Vashta Nereda are one thing the Doctor cannot stall for time or incapacitate somehow hence why he says to just run
Well, you can't reason with a predator. Most of his other enemies, he can use his greatest weapon them. His words. Even a Dalek can be stalled or given pause with the right words. But the Vashta Nerada are only interested in feeding and can't be reasoned with. They can barely communicate with people, so all of the Doctor's pleads, threats, bargains or whatever other kind of argument he chooses are useless. They're not invincible, but they are extremely difficult to communicate with and they can give Daleks a run for their money when it comes to singlemindedness.
I don't know, in the second part the Doctor is able to threaten back the Vashta in Anita's suit using his past accomplishments. "Look me up", he says. Plus, he's always been pretty adept at being able to defeat foes with plans made on the fly. By the end of everything, I think he must've started forming some kind of plan.
Truthfully, I wonder. What would have happened to the Vashta Nerada, if the whole library just burned down?
@@psychochiken4111 they'd die I think there'd be nothing to keep them safe nothing to keep them alive
