Sugar, wheat, and corn are traded commodities, so the sugar and grain industry will always have a vested interest in what people eat. For a long time, diabetics were prescribed saccharin to use instead of sugar. The minute saccharin began appearing in soft drinks they suddenly cause cancer. The same has been true for nearly all artificial sweeteners: cyclamates, xylitol, aspartame, etc. I have never understood why it bothers someone else what I, or anyone else, eats.

I’m no longer on Blood pressure meds, my cholesterol is perfect and my a1c went from 14.2 to 5 .2. I’m no longer on insulin or any other diabetic meds. So anyone who says this is a unhealthy diet don’t know what they are talking about. I’m healthier now then I ever was. Thank u for all you guys do for the keto lifestyle.

I was an overweight kid in the 60’s and 70’s. I weighed maybe 145. Different standards back then. My parents took me to Weight Watchers. Now, that was restrictive. Fast forward to when I brought up my 3 sons in the 90’s. I raised them to like meat and vegetables as well as the more carb heavy choices. They learned from watching me struggle with yo-yo diets that it is best to make small diet changes. In my 60’s I realize that the Keto lifestyle is not a diet it is a way to feel better and be more healthy. And it really is not restrictive, if you are hungry, eat something. On WW, if you were hungry, sorry Charlie, if you eat it’s cheating. I hated it.

I think I probably once thought that a life without pizza and cookies was not worth living. But that was my Carb addiction talking. Living without constant pain and inflammation is my REAL TREAT that I couldn't even fathom was possible before I tried Keto.
I do have kids. And I watched them putting on the pounds younger than I did, and I had gained weight younger and gotten heavier than my folks had. This is what really was the breaking point for me. My bad example of pizza and cookies was leading them to grow up unhealthy and unhappy just like me. So when I went Keto, my adult son joined me. He lost 80 lbs and now has a healthy BMI and body fat percentage. My daughter is more low carb as she is younger and so she still enjoys a sweet dessert, but only one and only after a whole foods dinner.

I think some of the fuel for this anger and outrage is ignorance. So many people don't really know what Keto looks like. I'm older than you two. My pediatrician put me on Atkins when I was 9 or 10. It wasn't called Atkins back then, but essentially, I ate meat and veggies. Well, throughout my life I have been cognizant of how my body responds to excessive carbs. I have not always been faithful to a low carb lifestyle, but I see the pounds almost immediately once I stray. What's even more sad is the health benefits of Keto/low carb living are being downplayed and overshadowed by the negative hype. I have two friends battling cancer. Both of them were advised by their oncologists to restrict carbs, specifically sugar and starch. I'm not an expert, but clearly there is something beneficial about the lifestyle.

Yes, I agree with you both and thank you for discussing this issue, I think the biggest problem is the non-understanding of what a Keto diet is, I have previously heard from a neighbour who was on this diet before me, but she became unwell with breast cancer and has thrown this lifestyle out with pressure from the medical profession, and her term was "It's not a good idea to thrown a whole food group out" and she was doing the diet before, I was pleased with myself at this time because I was able to say straight away that Keto doesn't throw carbs out of the diet, it just limits it, in a healthy way. I am a mother of 3 children and the most important thing when deciding on your children's diet is, understanding what is healthy and what is not, by providing a balanced diet and the SAD is not healthy especially for children who know no different. As parents, we protect our children and I think that this parent is very sensible and I support her decision.

I am 53 years old, been dabbling with low carb/keto for over a year and what I just realized is that I need to be eating like I did when I was a kid - in the early and mid 1970s, and no video games, no cable tv. let me explain - after school, summer break, etc. it was us getting together with our friends playing at the playground, walking the creek, exploring in the woods, walking the neighborhood, riding our bikes or rollerskating every where we wanted to go. we would be gone after breakfast, until dinner time. we’d stop at some friends house for a drink of water, usually from the garden hose - if we knew we were going fishing at the creek we’d pack pb sammies and some cool aid. and many times we’d run in the house and grab a quick slice of deli meat or cheese (or both) from the fridge and roll it up and eat it. and back out the door we’d go. we’d grab an apple, a pear, plum, or an orange too. it depended on what was in season and what the parents bought on sale. quick, simple and easy to eat foods. notice all the movement, too. we never sat still for long. chips, pretzels, doritos, etc were an occasional treat. same when the ice cream truck came around - sometimes mom and dad would say yes, sometimes they’d say no. i have a daughter, 28, and she was able to enjoy a similar childhood, but with 100 plus cable channels including disney and cartoon network, and with computers, and video games thrown in. and a way bigger selection of heat and eat meals, and pre packaged snacks. i noticed the kids didn’t go outside as much when she was growing up. we didn’t have a microwave and pizza rolls, popcorn, to pop in and have a hot snack in 2 minutes or less growing up, but she did. kids read less books, don’t play with barbie dolls or hot wheels, and use their imagination and entertain themselves and keep themselves busy these days. i’m just trying to show the differences and hopefully people will see what’s changed as a society and maybe that has a part to play in things and the obesity thing in america. all the conveniences make it easier to be lazy and not eat as good as we did in the past. sorry for ramble and i hope this made sense.

A balanced keto diet with the addition of some fruit and maybe some occasional treats would be perfectly healthy for kids and set them up for success. Kids don't need all of the processed foods, grains, sugary cereals, and all of the other things we think of as "kid foods". I think it's great to educate the children about food so they can make better choices as adults. I was always told to clean my plate and I am convinced that is partially the reason for me being obese before Keto. I have learned that grains and sugar make you hungry more often. I learned it by doing Keto. My nieces had McDonald's earlier this morning and they were hungry just a few hours later. It's so obvious to me now that the grains and sugar are why I suffered for years. I agree with you that eating Keto frees you from yourself. Food is no longer the top thing on my mind the whole day. All the junk is off limits and that is freeing once you accept it.

My Mom put me on Dr Atkins diet in 1972 when the book came out. I was 6 years old. I remember eating hamburger steak with cheese, green beans, iceberg lettuce wedges with mauo, slim jims, peanut butter, cheese slices, dill pickles, steak, chicken, and sugarfree jello with liquid whipping cream on top. I was barely chubby, but I guess she wanted to teach me young. I even had to show her the keto stix were purple so she'd know I wasn't cheating lol. (I do remember my friends buying me orange pushups at school lunch once in a while because they felt sorry for me haha.) I'm thankful she did because I have the tools I need ingrained in me. I'm keto now.

  • @michellesutton-luminoso9148

I simply don't buy highly processed or high sugar/ carb foods. This means my children only have healthy, low carb food to choose from. Their diet is made up of meat, vegetables, low glycemic fruit, cheese, seeds and nuts. As a treat we do dark chocolate, chia seed pudding, and some baked goods with nut flour. I also bake my own multigran bread weekly for the kids and will make them sandwiches with nut butters or meat and cheese. Their health is excellent and I am very proud of the way my family eats.

Many children are put on long term ketogenic diets to control health conditions such as epilepsy, type 1 diabetes, ADHD, inflammatory gut disorders and a variety of other things. They don't have any long term health issues or "disordered" eating. I personally wouldn't choose a keto diet for my kids unless it was necessary, but they basically eat what I eat with the starchy foods in addition. I try to limit treats because as a former obese child myself, I know what a slippery slope it can be. But I let them have it occasionally.

Great topic and content! It can be a bit of a Pandora's Box. My 4 brothers and I didn't always get fed and would cut out pictures of food in magazines and eat them, followed by punishment when it was discovered. There can be strong emotions in this subject that people, like myself, have to learn to overcome. I promised myself that I would never go hungry again and started working at age 13 delivering newspapers just to feed myself back in the 1960s-70s. Too much to say in this forum but I am very glad this came up. There are no perfect parents and we all make mistakes. 😎👍🏻

In recent years most people have gone way out of control with all the different advice (esp low fat diets) and gotten into even poorer health. A lot of people who criticize keto don't even know what keto means. This was another good video, ladies!

As a 65 year old woman I say these people are just wrong. I only remember 3 people who were overweight when I was growing up, 1 neighbor when I was 6 and twin girls in high school. We never went out to eat . I ate 1ce at McDonald's & 1ce at pizza hut prior to 1974. Now most people are insulin resistant, diabetic or well on their way. I control my t2d with keto/ low carb otherwise I would be on medication. Over 40 % of adults are obese and 20% of children. Obesity causes diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, depression and who knows what else. A healthy diet is not sugar, chemicals and carbs and its getting worse.

If you are old…you grew up as a child eating close to keto. Potatoes featured more heavily than would allow it to call it that, but we had all vegetables that were locally available, seasonal fruit…very very occasional bananas and oranges, and they weren’t like modern ones…meat, fish, eggs, cheese, with homemade recipes, pies etc. Milk, raw, and butter and cream from the farm down the road. Proper food! I was born in the UK on the tail end of rationing, so we didn’t eat lots of sugar anyway. We had a homemade cake maybe once a fortnight. People are insane these days.

I get asked all the time if my kids are on "keto". I always say that I'm not about to cook 2 different meals every meal for my family. They eat what I eat and truth be told have a varied palate because of it. Maybe they haven't tasted the latest Dorito flavor or Skittles, but they have a love for veggies and don't have texture issues related to food. As a (now reversed thanks to keto) type 2 diabetic I think it's part of my job as their parent to educate them about what they eat can impact them for the rest of their lives. Nowadays there are so many keto options for treats that they don't have to miss out on pizza or ice cream or even brownies. Keto is sustainable for us because of how versatile it is and how I rarely feel restricted while living this way.

Hopefully with all the publicity she will get a lot more viewers that will look into feeding their children better foods and less sugar. If you look at pictures from the 60"s almost everyone was thin...then we started eating sugar cereals, cokes, and just more processed foods. America kept getting bigger and bigger....but there is so much money in pills and companies making these bad products. We don't need sugar. Our bodies are capable of making all the glucose we need (which isn't much). I hope it will wake up more parents and little by little we will have healthier children and healthier adults. Keep fighting the good fight!!! Keto on.

I chalk it up to ignorance. Most who feel the need to criticize don’t have real knowledge of what ketogenic eating is about. When I was still attending WW meetings (while following a keto diet), one leader said, in promotion of the WW Program, “Sure, you can lose weight on keto, but do you want to drink bulletproof coffee the rest of your life?” I said to my friends “That’s not a requirement of a keto diet.”

Restrictions, discipline is essentially the same thing. You discipline yourself or someone else to follow a healthy diet to be healthy, it feels like in this country any type of discipline is “wrong “, so what’ is right then? Just let everything go, do what you want, behave how you want. Essentially what it comes down to.
